Tahm Kench needs a nerf imo.

Muted Summoner··77 votes·7,547 views

He is my most played champion. He is imo the reason why I was able to climb in to Plat this season. I played him mostly in the jungle with great success and a few times in top and hardly in support. Mostly only losing due to dcers or people who did not have faith in the Kench or even knew how to play with him.

As a support he has a very weak laning phase. His W cost so much mana even if its used to save a team mate. Support Kench is mostly about saving team mates or setting up cc such as eating an enemy then spitting them out in your teams cc. Later on though even as support he starts to deal good damage if he gets a good amount of hp items or simply because of his W can either cancel so many ults and not put them on refund such as Veigar Vi or just deal way to much damage peeling your carries from champions such as darius/etc. Even as a support I've been able to solo full tanks or even carries or champs such as Darius/etc with hardly any resistant items simply because of his Q and W cc chain.

As a top laner he goal is to play safe and poke the enemy down if he can but once he hits 6 his damage increases greatly. He is great as a top laner when his jungler ganks. It makes it very easy to to get his W on. Maxing your W imo is the best option as it increases its broken damage. Playing top though is quite risky if you're not safe and if you have no wards. Its very important you buy wards as a top laner for Tahm kench. He has no escapes.

Jungle though is where its at. He easily clears the camps with his W. If his laners have any kind of decent cc/slows he can easily walk in and provide kills. By building full tank with mostly hp items he becomes a juggernaut that makes even the recent juggernauts look inferior.

His biggest counter is Vayne if he can't stay on her and normally sated devourer junglers simply because the sated devourer is to strong of an item but with a competent team Sated Devourer junglers will have hardly any impact in the game if they can't get assist or kills. Gnar top does also make the lane frustrating. He has obvious counters and is easily kited but with the right setup of champions such as Lulu Sivir Morgana /etc and items such as item 3800 item 3069 fixes that problem.

The biggest problem is his late game. Its way to strong. He just deals way to much damage but does have a weak laning phase. Tahm kench must be shut down early or Tahm kench's team must be losing hard for him to not have an impact. He has a very safe jungle. Tahm Kench's Devourer at max deals 32% of his targets max HP not to mention his Abyssal Voyage passive increases his damage of his abilities and auto attacks based on Tahm kench's Max Hp. Even if you have 50% reduced magic damage from magic resist, tahm kench's W at least deals 16% of the targets hp. Another issue with Tahm Kench that makes where he has less impact is when team mates have no clue about what he can do. Several times you see allies not clicking on you when you are ulting or they run away from you when you can save them from abilities such as when a Zed ults them.

As he starts seeing more play this will become less of an issue and players will eventually realize how good he is. He is seeing world play but as a support. Where teams are able to coordinate with him where playing him as a support is honestly a very good option.

item 3083 item 3065 item 3742 item 3143 item 3725 and your choice of item 1001 . item 3800 is a great item easily subbed for item 3742 item if needed. Normally with that build in team fights you can just walk through the enemies tonguing any threatening targets to your team and eating enemy champions holding them while auto attacking targets near by providing great peel and damage simply by just going ham. If you get low you can easily just walk out and press your E if necessary. Heal up with item 3083 and simply just going back in if the fight is still going on.

As a support you normally go item 2049 item 3401 item 3190 item 3117 item 3102------ item 3110 or item 3143 Allows him to do great damage and provide even more peel with the CDR support builds normally net you.

His mid and late game needs to be nerf and perhaps his early get compensated a bit. Building tank should not allow you to net doubles and triple kills just because you ate a target at 30% hp netting a kill. Nailing your Q stun and nailing autos right before you eat them as the stun from your Q wears off allows Tahm kench to do way to much damage. Putting the enemy in to long of a cc chain. You can't even decrease the duration of his W with item 3111 making it have hardly any counter play unless you get a item 3140 Maxing You W decreases its cooldown which is greatly useful. Q does provide a stronger slow and more damage but maxing it is not worth over your W. You want the W up asap as it provides great peel and damage when needed. Q is always on a 6 second cd. Maxing it 1st is like maxing Skarners E, its best to max it second instead. The slow is already good enough if landed and chances are if you have even the slightest bit of CDR your Q will be up again shortly after the slow wears off.

I know this is quite a huge thread. I honestly did not intend to do so. But decided to show build patterns and explain about what Tahm Kench can do. Tahm Kenchs W can be just as strong if not stronger than Ultimates from Garen or even Darius on a much shorter cooldown. He is slowly starting to see more play. With the recent play in worlds. The attention of Tahm Kench will start to rise where players will realize. He is quite good and not the "useless Bard" as others have called him.

Very well written and informative OP. IMO, Taum Kench was never a weak champion. He has always been incredibly strong. And a Taum Kench that knows what he is doing is ridiculously powerful. Unfortunately, in Bronze Taum Kench is a serious liability for your team because players in those leagues simply don't swallow teammates at the appropriate times. This turns almost every teamfight into a 3v5 in these leagues even if the Taum Kench is not intentionally trolling. All you can do is tell the Taum Kench not to swallow you, but there is nothing you can do to stop him if he decides he's going to.

I've seen Kallista throw her spear at their support half way through laning phase and I've experienced the "friendly" Bard ults that nullify your damage to the enemy and set you up to get killed, but they are nothing compared to what Taum Kench can do as a teammate to mess you up.

Of course, I expect we'll see more Taum Kench at worlds where teams can coordinate around Taum's abilities and also because he is so ridiculously strong in the hands of experienced players.

Here's the thing: Tahm was fairly good after his release. A few minor tweaks happened, but nothing major. Then Riot saw no one was playing him, and gave him a buff. Then they gave him a buff. Then they gave him a buff.

The problem of him not being popular wasn't that Tahm was too weak, the problem was that players had no idea what to do with him. He could go top, jungle, support, and even mid... but he never really excelled in any role. He's a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. At least until he got buffed, now he's a master of all because he's so damn strong. You just can't have a champion be a generalist anymore, just ask Taric. If you ever see him.

People want picks that are strong in their one role, not above average in lots of roles.

I agree the biggest problem with Tahm was when he was released people didn't know how to use him. They thought he was just a troll champion like Bard. But he was buffed to hard. Now that players are getting used to his kit he will continue to see more play because he is good. When ever a champions is deemed "op" we will have the recent surge of " I main this champion because he is op" such as Veigar. Veigar was hardly played but now you see "veigar mains" coming out like roaches.

While I do agree that Tahm is powerful... I think it's worth pointing out that he is extremely single target which is a large price to pay for a CC tank/support. Thought it was worth mentioning.

No hes been strong. It wasn't just worlds. Players have been slowly learning his strengths and how to play with him to the point he eventually saw play even in worlds. He isn't a priority pick like Darius/etc have been but he is a solid champ under the right circumstances.

So, right as he appears in worlds, the day it happens, is now when threads appear.

Sorry but if this was actually something gradually occurring to people, it would have shown signs of that before hand.

There has been plenty of threads up before he even has seen plat at worlds. Do some research 1st. But the majority of ppl never cared until he was see at worlds. I didn't just all of a sudden start playing TK where he is my most played champ because of today. It has, if you even watch streamers such as Meteos and others who have been playing him in top/etc TK was doing great. Perhaps you haven't been on the boards muhc but if you honestly use that search feature you'd see some threads, of course they get downvoted or ignored because ppl thought they were full of shit until he was seen at worlds. Hell Im not even talking about TK as as support, I am talking about him as a jungler and a top laner.

All it takes is a pro game for ppl start flocking to it.

Funny you mention that, because all it takes is a pro game for people to also scream overpowered at someone.

Except that it did happen: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/AsusuWPA-tahmkench-is-op

It did show, if people had taken a look at his statistics on champion.gg it would've occured to everyone that Tahm is overtuned and thus OP. However, people don't care for champions that they do not see in most of their games. Once a champion sees play on prolvl the popularity rises and people start to realize how strong this champion is.

That was my thread about him. I got into Plat myself this season, Tahm being one of the bigger reasons why I got to it.

People say he's immobile, but he has a 2-man TF ultimate as well as a decent Movement Speed boost when Devouring an Ally. But not only that, Tahm is one of the stickiest champions in the game. If he EVER lands Q on you, you're caught. You're literally stuck with Kench unless someone comes to save you, because one Q will lead into a W, which then leads to you being dragged away and Q'd again and again.

But not only that, as stated before, Tahm is a walking Hourglass that can save any teammate from practically anything aside from DoTs, which will persist and still deal damage to the target inside of Tahm. The remedy to this would obviously be focus Tahm and kill him. The reason this doesn't work is because Tahm will build nothing but tank items. That means he's going to have 3k+ HP with 150-200+ Armor and Magic Resist. So trying to burst him down means you'll have nothing left for his dealing with his team. Basically its never a good idea to focus Kench first because he takes A LOT of damage to bring down. Not only because of the tank items he has, but also his E, which gives him a shield based on the amount of damage he's taken. Which is just insane for someone who is going to be a giant wall to soak damage.

But then it gets even better. For building himself into a giant sponge that soaks damage, he's rewarded with bonus damage on EVERY auto attack AND his Q & W. So he's still a threat himself not only in utility, but also as a damage dealer. Which honestly is just insane. Noone should be allowed to deal damage while building straight tank. Its just so contradicting.

As much as I LOVE Kench, I can't deny that he is most definitely imbalanced.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

Sticky? Ever try a frozen mallet on him? XD I agree he's unbalanced, but in comparison; nocturne is one of the fairest assassins in the game, but is rarely played and has a pitiful win rate to match. If every champion was balanced it'd be like mario bros sadly; I'd rather it be unbalanced but fair, instead of unfair but balanced. Know what I mean?

Yeah i play Tahm Kench alot in 3v3 jungle i take Red smite Cinderhulk then Tytanic i can eat someone go undertower and tank 1vs2 or 1vs3 for like 10 sec already... and the more the game go on the more strong you get.... Only the early game is weak.

IMO they should make his R passive only work on auto and not spell too, to reduce some of his damage, and make W damage 20% at all rank. This would reduce the ridiculous amount of damage he deal for a tanky champ, without gutting his supporting ability. Im compensation they could buff his early game, maybe with some base stats increase.

MetalGearTeemu2 votes

my beef with the catfish is that you're basically forced to target him first, since he provides so much safety for the ADC he's protecting. But he has the best anti-burst tool in the game in his grey health shield, and if you try to ignore him and focus the carry you enter the "Soraka Zone" where you'll get the enemy ADC only to find theres no hope of a kill, due to a mobile item 3157 in this case rather then just Raw healing.

The reason Kalista / TahmKench took off the way it did is that neither of those champions is a target, both can provide massive safety for the other. Go on TahmKench ? watch him tank more burst then pretty much any other support outside of a cow with ult up, then get pulled out by his adc.

Go on Kalista ? you'll need to use pretty much every scrap of CC to hold her still, then the frogface just eats her and walks away to safety with a healthy move speed buff.

His fucking shield is what needs nerfing

My Waifu Vanilla7 votes

The shield won't mean anything if he does less damage. The only reason his shield is a problem NOW is because he does enough sustained damage to 1v1 anyone late game while having a 5 second cc train on top of an effective 14%+ hp execute.

Currently as someone else said it is a lose-lose situation where you focus him and he shields which is perfectly fine since he is a tank. The problem is when you ignore him and he kills half your team and then still has the giant shield available.

at max his W deals 32% Hp magic damage plus his R passive. You need enough magic resist to reduce it by half just to reduce his W damage to a bare minimum of 16%. Mean while because someone built so much MR the adc/etc will shred the target not to mention most MR items are completely defensive and hardly offer anything for offense so chances you won't deal much to TK either and up being a useless tank.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

I was just saying his shield is the least of his problems. You can be as tanky as you want as long as you don't do a lot of damage along with it. Tahm in his current state has too much of everything in the forms of cc, bulk, and damage and the damage part would be the easiest to balance in my opinion without completely gutting him. Like I'm sorry but no champion should be able to have 4k+ health and have a mixed 300 damage or so auto attack along with titanic hydra damage (another 80+) and still have an effective 6 second stun or so.

Tahm gets punished really hard for poor positioning. In any role, he's a bully, simply because of how his passive works (in conjunction with his Q and W). However: if he eats the wrong target, if he's too far away from his desired target, he's pretty boned. His ult won't help you get to ongoing teamfights, it's strictly an initiation tool. He's pretty good against the juggernauts and the likes of Anivia, Veigar, Kog'maw because they lack mobility. It's actually feasible to get your passive off on them. He's also pretty good against the idiots who think assassins are viable (sorry not sorry).

who go 0/5 in lane then spam they lost because TK sucks and that is why they lost their lane and for no other reason.

That's why I always endeavor to kill the enemy top laner or at least force them back so I can get the tower. His lack of mobility is definitely a problem for his farm and for his (counter)ganks when he goes jungle. Speaking of which, have you tried building Sightstone when both teams are trying to outrotate each other? It's so much fun to drop tons of wards and not have to pay for them.

As a sidenote: It really vexes me that you need to complain about both Vayne and Devourer to get upvotes around here...

I'm not exactly complaining about Vayne. I am about devourer. I love the devourer item but at the same time I hate it. It either snowballs way to hard or is completely useless. It has no middle ground. I have never agreed with Vayne % hp true damage but I can see why it can be needed. Shes a counter pick to tanks and that is very useful if she has good peel. Vayne not a bad thing but the % true damage does seem a bit much.

Dengeden1 votes

Devourer encourages crab and dragon control, I kinda like that because both are very contestable(?) objectives. There's little you can do about the its feast or famine nature, it's a dps item on a role that needs kills to get solo lane level items.

Eh, if Vayne did %health damage, tanks could stack armor, if she did true damage, tanks could stack health.

Tahm DONT NEED NERFS

But let me explain

Tahm need to be tuned down but not to be nerfed

What do i mean

Tahm is strong in top lane and jungle why? because of his grey shield for me this is the only thing that need to be tuned down

Like

"Every time you take damage your health convert into a shield" Max 500 (Or make it 500 at the begging and to scale to full hp at rank 5) because now at rank 1 having all your hp as shield is what make tahm strong because you need to kill him 2 times and if you put tank items to him it become even stronger!1

BUT if you nerf other abilities he would become useless as support

So if riot nerf his grey shield he wouldnt be so good as a top lane tank

Plus people complain about his W ok riot can nerf the damage AND BUFF THE cd and the mana costs so he would be A GOOD SUPPORT

I main tahm as support i have mastery 5 on him and i like him because i can say no to all this point and click delete champions abilities that this game have plus a big middle finger to everyone who play rengar SO TAHM need to remain the same

riot only need to tune down his tank ability but make him a better support with lower CD on his W

But ofcourse you people want riot to gut him because you play rengar or zed and you are used to play champion with no counterplay and now a champion can counter your point and click abilities and you are all mad...

Tahm does an insane amount of damage while effectively having 30-100% bonus current HP at all times. I've been playing him jungle a ton, and I'd say that Q max is better in the jungle, because the increased slow is MUCH more helpful in ganks. In lane, yeah I agree W max is way better. More damage, more poke, more waveclear, and more all-in.

Have you tried Titanic on him? The AA reset makes getting his passive off so easy. At full build, and your autos do about 400-500 hybrid damage, split pretty evenly, the reset bumps that up to 800-900 for the second attack, and then you can auto or Q for anouther 400-500, eat them, and they are almost certainly dead. Its insane.

I've tried the Q max over W but the problem is My W just wont be up as soon and I need it up soon as possible if a team mate gets caught so i can eat him then have it up soon to eat another team mate or an enemy. If my team mates have any kind of cc. By chaining the cc, 1 after the other it should be enough to get by with a lv 1 Q til W is maxed.

If you go by worlds, CLG only got outplayed. It wasn't Tahm kench dominating. Clg just got out played by the kit of TK. He wasn't dealing a lot of damage in that game, the problem is he can deal a lot of damage while being able to make some huge plays with his W. TBH worlds has nothing to do with him already being strong. It is true though that because worlds he will get more attention from players who never knew what he was capable of. It won't be long til those players eventually discover hes a solid top and jungler in addition to his role as support.
