Why is every knock up aoe?

Seems like every single last knock up is aoe. Why does the most powerful form of Cc outside of suppression feature aoe so often?

Suppression isn't even that strong. It can be cleansed and most suppression abilities in the game are channelled and can therefore be disrupted (See: Malzahar, Warwick, etc)

Well, let's work backwards here.

RekSai - Literally needs to be right under you to knock you up. Kalista - Ultimate ability. Azir - Ultimate ability, or single target. Gnar - Ultimate ability. Braum - Ultimate ability. I need to get through 7 of the latest champions to find a relatively bad justification for having an AOE knock up. Every other champion on the other hand has a great excuse for a little more 'oomph' in their knock ups.

Vi ult is single target... And trust me you don't want it to be an AoE knockup...

while not all are knock ups, these champion have an ability that can leave a target airborn while only being single target
