Rift Herald: I like it

As a counter point to the "OMG so OP, nerf plz" threats that keep popping up, and as I suspect that players who like it are less likely to post:

I really like the new rift Herald. Yes, it can be powerful if used right, but between, say, infernal drake or rift herald at 10-19 minutes, I prefer infernal drake, and it is not much harder to take if uncontested (can be a little easier or harder depending), so I don't think it is the most valuable objective on the map, hence not OP in that sense. If the other team is asleep it can win a game singlehandedly. But that is probably just speeding up the inevitable.

What I really like about it, is that it adds strategic choices. Do I go for it or go for dragon? Or take a wave of cs/a few camps, or maybe push a tower? Where and when do I summon it? It's effectiveness depends a lot on that! And for opponent's team, how to defend against it. I like the strategic choices it involves, and I feel the reward is appropriate for the risk/effort for taking it at that point in the game.

I feel it can be improved in a few (minor) ways, but that deserves its own post.

P.S. What i do not expect it to do is to make botlane "as important" as top. It is fine though, the whole reason why botlane usually has two people is because it is more important (near dragon). And when that became less relevant, lane swaps became more prevalent in LCS, hence the botlane tower nerf to nerf lane swaps. So as long as riot do not want lane swaps, botlane will be more important than top. But that is fine in my book.

People are huge babies with big power shifts like this. They don't want to learn how to work as a team so would rather complain about the things that require teamwork.

<3 new Rift Herald

Good luck defending against that when you are behind.

It needs to give more than just 25 gold to whoever kills it.

Personally I hate it, because its sole existence (including its buff) is just there to push the "melee splitpusher top laner" meta-trope. It's a design created solely to strengthen an arbitrary meta, and I despise it for it.

If they actually wanted to create it as a choice between that and Dragon and a choice between power against champs or power to push or something along those lines, they wouldn't make it resilient to ranged attacks specifically for no reason, that its buff is only receivable by 1 person on the team and it's only active when the person with the buff is alone, and they also wouldn't make it so the Rift Herald only spawns once.

Rift Herald may be promoting more strategic choices, within a box, a very small box, hence that's still not changing the fact the box could've been far larger and with more sheer strategic choices if they'd not gone with the current shoehorned design.

IMO.

I have enjoyed it a TON so far, too. And it really does separate good players from mediocre ones. I have seen some INCREDIBLY bad herald plays from my own teams in the last week. If you don't use it well, it's really not strong at all.

I'm not sure how I feel about it as a concept yet, though I think the numbers are a bit high right now. However, I disagree with your premise that it creates more strategic choices, because it seems pretty clear-cut what to do. If it's either Rift or Dragon, take Dragon if it's Infernal/Mountain, Rift if Ocean/Cloud. Choosing when/if to kill Rift will still follow the same decision process as the old one, although you may see a little more pressure top-side. Either way, current meta top laners and jungles won't be affected much, if it all.

It's just another binary tool to assist in snowballing featured in a game that has too much snowballing as is.

The team that is ahead is the most likely to get Rift-Herald, so they get a free tower or two and are now further ahead, if you try to battle the rift herlad you may preserve a tower in that lane but surrender an objective elsewhere.

It provides too much reward for not enough risk. Sure, I've been on the winning side of this situation but it just doesn't feel that satisfying to have a PvE siege minion roll down the lane for me and do what I'm supposed to do. Talk about non-interactive, wow.

I think its a good way to promote early game champions and give a option to rush base. I mean, it gives incentives to pick champions like leblanc on the midlane. renekton for top.

The only thing they need to do is to make towers do more damage to champions (but not herald) so that late game champs can hug tower and stuff to balance the odds.
