Mildly confused about lethality

I am a bit confused about lethality. I understand what it is/does etc but where my confusion comes in is how it can be so op due to stacking. When I look at each item that has lethality, next to the lethality line is says UNIQUE passive +15 lethality. How can something stack when it is a unique passive? From what I understood, unique passives are unique so you wouldn't be able to have item 3147 item 3142 item 3814 all stack, you would just have the top lethality from the one item (+15 lethality post nerf) rather than +45 lethality, right? What am I missing? Do certain unique passives stack and are then truly not unique?

an unnamed unique passive means you can't buy multiple of the same item and have it stack. So you wouldn't get 45 lethality from item 3814 item 3814 item 3814 It's the same with stacking CDR or anything else. item 3165 item 3165 wouldn't get you 40 CDR, but item 3165 item 3115 would.
