Shiv + Tri Force is shit on Yasuo

Shiv into IE is better in pretty much every single aspect; crit really only matters when you have a high AD to multiply, which you sure as hell don't get from building Tri Force. Sure, having Shiv + Tri Force + IE is nice, but that's over 10k gold, and you're still squishy as fuck. Unless you've snowballed SUPER hard, I would much rather have Shiv + IE + Greaves + GA so that I could actually teamfight without getting instantly blown up (and then have the revive potential of GA).

Why is it that people are so obsessed with this build right now on Yasuo? Shit is garbage.

I don't really play Yasuo, but it's easy enough to look at pros and cons of it anyway.

Trinity force gives Yasuo

  • Higher early damage (sheen procs and extra W damage)
  • much better mobility (%MS and Phage)
  • more durability (not much, but it's worth noting on a squishy melee carry)
  • Stats that generally work well on Yasuo (AD+AS+Crit all at once)
  • The last bit of Crit he needs if he wants 100% without runes or going over cap

It's basically a well rounded ball of stats with no clear strengths or weaknesses, pretty generalistic in that regard.

IE gives Yasuo

  • A LOT of damage that scales with other items (Crit, crit damage, AD)

In that sense, IE gives a lot fewer types of stats, but in exchange gives a much stronger spike in one regard, damage.

Trinity force is a good pickup for a more bruiser Yasuo and is more generalized for any given situation, IE is more focused on dealing raw damage and is hard to pull off if behind. Both builds have their own merits, some would just argue that Trinity force covers some of Yasuo's early weaknesses better than IE does and is therefore a better second item after shiv.

People who build Shiv>Trinity usually postpone Ie until late in the match after getting some more defense like Merc treads and some defensive item, so it doesn't leave them squishy as heck like you suggest. Also, the Shiv+IE powerspike is not what it used to be, because unless you bring 10% crit from runes you'll not have as consistent DPS as he used to, or as consistent as Trinity provides.

do you know why the standard for him is rush shiv?

its because early game BASE AD is king, no1 has had time to build armor (mid lane), so you're effectively dealing double damage on every auto. which lets say you only have 70 base AD by the time you complete shiv? (its more like 95~105 ish with a dorans blade and runes) and now you have 40% crit chance just because of his passive.

  • all of your base damages on abilities.

so its "like" having more than 70 AD on your INCREDIBLY CHEAP, + GOLD BONUS item while building. you also get its +magic damage effect and the movespeed which is quite nice (when finished). and the wave clearing that would otherwise be a problem unless he puts himself in the wave.

granted he doesn't always crit 100% of the time with just shiv, but you get enough autos off and its more meaningful in the early game than any other rush item on another champion. its like "i got shiv, i hit a huge powerspike for no reason!"

if yasuo were to dive, use all of his abilities once, and maybe 2 auto attacks, it would be unheared of for him not to get at least 1 crit, and have dealt enough damage to 100-0 you, which is fairly normal for a lot of mid laners, but his item is cheaper and grants him waveclear, and safety/chase with that MS.

its not like he fails to 100-0 you 60% of the time when he doesn't crit, but ya know..... those super short CD's of his, he'll just try again in another ~15seconds.
