Teach Me How To Auto-Attack

I am really bad at this game. Mostly because I'm too much of a sissy to play proper Rift and instead play ARAM and bots. But mostly because I'm just bad.

However, I've come to realize that my shittiness is particularly clear when I'm playing champions that focus heavily on auto-attacking, so most marksmen (I do okay with Corki and Jhin) and various divers and skirmishers (Jax, Olaf, etc.). I just can't seem to get an auto-attack champion to flow properly. The games where things go well tend to feel more like my team is doing well and I get carried to a decent score.

As a ranged character it feels difficult to get in more than one or two attacks. As soon as I step into range I have to retreat due to enemy spells or divers. As melee just getting close to the enemy is a nightmare in and of itself. The most common advice I see is to wait until the initial clash has settled down, but then I'm not actually helping my team and they get killed.

I feel like I'm just spewing nonsense. But seriously. Teach me how to auto-attack.

your not, what your describing is a mechanic called "kiting". as a marksman, you job is to stay as far back from the frontline as possible, you want to be JUST OUTSIDE of range, so you can get your licks in whilst staying safe.

kiting is when you auto attack, step back or forward, then auto attack again. you can get more attacks off this way because after every champs auto attack, there is a useless resting animation. once the projectile is fired, you don't need it, so to fill the gap, you can move and then auto attack your target again.

kiting can technically be done by anyone, but how fast you can do this is dependent on how high your attack speed stat is so is therefore generally only used by marksmen.

the reason its a nightmare to anyone who is melee is because that's abusing the fact that you have range. if they cant get close, they cant kill you, which is the purpose of kiting.

also please, I cant stress this enough, because of how many times ive seen this. YOU MUST ONLY ATTACK THE CLOSEST TARGET TO YOU. it might be nice to shutdown the 8/0 viktor, but if going to him would put you in immediate danger of the alistar w with the enemy adc nearby, then don't do it. the reason your forced back is because your playing far to close to the frontline. as the adc, your team is there to set up and protect YOU (sometimes) as a carry. just stay behind the tank, let him soak the damage, and your team will be fine. ESPECIALLY if you can get a pick on an out of position carry.

In the top right corner of your mouse there should be a large button that usually rests under your middle finger. Press that button. Congratulations, you're now an ADC main, enjoy!
