I don't have any specific champion in mind when I'm asking this, but I just got curious, why are some traps visible and others invisible?

Visible traps: Caitlyn Maokai Nidalee Invisible traps: Shaco Teemo

The visible ones usually need followup from the champ. The invisible ones do a lot on their own.

visible ones are better for zoning

invisible ones can be disabled, but they establish map presence for Teemo and bush death for Shaco

the visible ones are in the champions that need to protect them selves... for example caitlyn plants her traps in order to block a space so the enemy wont raid her , so the trap doesn't deal too much damage , as it is for protect the most, as it comes with a powerful auto attack once the opponent is stupid enough to touch the trap. teemo on the other hand, uses his traps in multiple ways, 1.vision traps instead of buying wards.. 2. do serious damage. 3. using it as a trap in the bushes, so the enemy jungler lose too much of his health and back of

Shouldn't be any special reason outside of "because that's how they were designed". You could take one and fiddle with it to put it into the other category but that would end up being a complete redesign by the time you are done. It would also make the ability wholly different and unable to fulfill the intended use in the game and maybe not even fit the champion anymore.

Like the Jack-in-the-boxes. They are supposed to be Jack-in-the-boxes; they pop up and surprise children, so Shaco's are invisible and pop up and surprise (fear) champions. The invisibility works with it thematically.

Because it's how the game was designed.... it's like asking why is Ekko melee and why is Caitlyn ranged... what a stupid question xD
