Support 101 for beginners question

I'm new, barely lvl 11. Being in really low elo (with good reason), means that I get a lot of weird team comps. I was wondering what my role is as a support when there's no ADC to support. It's getting to the point where I don't pick support in games without one because I don't feel like I'm doing anything. I feel like most other non-ADC heroes can support themselves fine, for the most part, and I'm just being carried as Taric/Lulu/whatever until lategame and taking a team slot that could be used on a hero that's either better at killing other heroes or better at botting than most supports.

At the moment, you just don't. A support's design pretty much ties them to the ADC at this point. They can usually follow around an Assassin and still do pretty well, but with the game's current balance, you need the ADC. If your team is 4 mages, don't pick a support. You cannot do anything. Just get to a higher level until you can get teammates who will give you an ADC to work with.

Alternatively, you can pick Zyra, Brand, Lux, or Vel'Koz, and go "support"

Mmm, you can go an aggressive support mage in bot lane like Brand, Zyra, Malz, etc. At lower ranks, you really can't support much with a traditional defensive support as your team is not coordinated enough to do so.

In addition to the mages the others have mentioned, Morgana is a nice middle of the road supp...She can do damage, but has good utility as well. Her maxed Q is one of the longest snares in the game, and it's up every several seconds late game...skillshot, ofc.

Rammus support is fantastic. not only that, but he is cheap and works well in mid and top as well. hes also easy to learn! Almost same goes for fiddlesticks support

There are plenty of supports that are offensively oriented. Sona is a great example. Shes is very well known for her ability to sustain her ADC whilst poking the enemy ADC out. When I play her I am often do more damage than my ADC the by end game. Also Sona's ult is a medium range AOE stun - A lot of times shes flashing right into the enemy to land 4-5 stuns.
