Could someone explain how the champion ranking system works to me? (S, S-, etc)

I have been curious about this for a while, but a game that just finished prompted me to ask about this. I just want to understand the system, because right now it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Anyway, in the game that just finished, there was a Ziggs that was 5/2/15 (KDA ratio of 10), a Jhin that was 13/4/9 (5.5 ratio) and a Darius that was 9/8/7 (2 KDA ratio). The Ziggs also did more damage to enemy champions by almost 10k over Jhin and Darius. Darius had the most CS on the team (part of the problem was Darius got smashed in the early game, and the team had to hold 4v5 for the next 10-15 minutes while he just sat in side lanes farming) and Jhin had more than Ziggs. Jhin and Darius got S- while I think the Ziggs got an A-. I'm just curious if CS is really the largest factor in the rating, or what stats are counted and what isn't.

Thing is scores arent assigned based on relative performance to teammates in a particular game. Instead it compares your performance in that game to the average performance of the entire community on that champion in that role. So it was comparing ziggs to all ziggs players in league of legends, not to the jhin and draven. Apparently, the community performs well on ziggs in general so it expects a much higher level of play to get an S than darius or jhin.

Theres no official post on what counts and what doesn't and how each factor is weighted. Speculation seems to agreed that these factors contribute to your score though:

-KDA -CS (not for support) -Kill Participation -Wards placed -Contribution to objectives (assists or take-downs of towers) -Gold gained

Its also possible that items built and upgrading trinkets may have an effect but I haven't seen any evidence for that so far.

As a slight analysis of those 3 champions in that game, based on champion.gg statistics of plat+ games, Ziggs gets the highest cs per game of those 3 champions at 198 with Jhin at 190 and Darius at 184. Without exact numbers from the game I can only surmise that however much cs matters for those roles Jhin is likely getting the most 'points' for it while Darius and Ziggs are getting less, though between those two I'm not sure as I believe cs matters more for Ziggs than it does for Darius. Now for KDA, Ziggs is expected a 6/6/8. He got 1 less kills but considerably better on both deaths and assists, so overall he has a good score. Jhin is expected an 8/6/8. He got considerably more kills and a third less deaths than average with only one less assist than anticipated. Again a really good score compared to average. Finally Darius is expected a 7/6/6. He did somewhat poor with his deaths, but had 2 kills and 1 assist over the expected values. Overall this score does look good, but not as much as the other 2. Now how much these scores matter I have no idea, but I imagine that they look at them individually and not as a single combined score. As such I believe the value of kills for all 3 of these champions, them being damage/kill oriented, would be waited higher than assists and deaths. Because of that weighting, Ziggs would lose points for having a low amount of kills. Based on this I would guess that Jhin would get the highest score among them, with Darius and Ziggs both being within about a letter grade below him.

Now bear in mind that Riot has not officially explained what goes into the scores or the weighting of each element, so this is all speculation. I would however assume that objective participation would also factor in, and Ziggs is the kind of champion that is likely to help take down a lot of towers so if he did not participate a lot on tower killing, or even if few towers were killed overall, he would lose credit there. The other 2 wouldn't necessarily take as much of a hit for this, especially if Darius was actively split pushing. Ward coverage and ward destroying might also impact any of the 3 of them to some extent.

Thanks for the explanation, that makes more sense. Normally I don't care much about the rankings, but since it's the only way to get boxes without spending money for them, it has become much more relevant.
