Reasons to change Galio's passive

Right now, Galio's passive is borrowing him into a "High AP Enemy Team Pick" niche, and that should be filled by the "I'm the Antimage!" Kassadin.

These are some reason's why it's passive is unhealthy for Galio:

  1. He is punished (or not rewarded) **for buying another stat. ** This may seem stupid, but his power budget is attached to passive. As he isn't using the most effect of his passive, he is wasting power budget. And Galio may not need Magic Resist at all, comparing to old Xerath(He gained Armor acording to Ability Power. He would buy Ability Power everytime) and Rammus (He gains AD for Armor, but he needs armor as he Taunts enemies).
  • It hiddens Galio's basic abilities damage As it counts base Magic Resist, he has some Base Damage hidden from his abilites. There is a table behind *1
  • It lowers his abilites ratios Because he can reach further Ability Power ratios than other tanks,he has lower Ratios to compensate, thus making problem 1 even more disgussting
  • Makes his defensive ability a damage steroid Althought weird, his Bulwark increases the Damage of his other abilities

In my opinion, his passive, althought iconic, should be removed, and given another one.

Ideas:

  • Runic Skin: Galio gains bonus Armor and Magic Resist.
  • Runic Skin: Galio mitigates Magic Damage received
  • Runic Skin: Galio gains Ability Power each time he is dealt Magic Damage for a short time
  • Runic Skin: Galio gains a passive shield, which absorbs Magic Damage received. It refreshes after a time of not receiving damage.
  • Runic Skin: Galio gains bonus Crowd Control reduction
  • Runic Skin: Galio's cooldownds are reduced by a fixed amount each time it receibes Magic Damage
  • Runic Skin: Galio slows enemies which deal damage to him
  • Runic Skin: Galio's abilies reduce damage taken by hit champions

There are more ways to give him a Tanky passive which encourages building Magic Resist or still make him the Magic Damage tank without forcing him to build Magic Resist and give him some freedom at his build.

*1

Resolute Smite has 9 + (0.9/Level) bonus Base Magic Damage ( 25 Hidden Damage at level 18) Righteus Gust has 7.5+(0.75/Level) bonus Base Magic Damage ( 21 Hidden Damage at level 18) Idol of Durand has 9 + (0.9/Level) bonus Base Magic Damage ( 25 Hidden Damage at level 18)

Lower ability Ratio than who?

Which tank has a 1000 range 300 + 0.6 low CDR AoE Slow nuke that can be safely spammed from far away?

Cho'gaths Q might be comparable except Galio has much lower cooldowns

Amumu Blitzcrank Chogath Leona Malphite Nautilus Sejuani Singed Zac

He has lower ratios than those champions. And im comparing with tanks. And saying "Galio has a safe poke ability" has nothing to do with ratios, as we could say "Galio hasn't a gap closer": And that is not the point of the topic.

The only problem i see with Galio is that his ult requires him to slowly float at his opponent until they are within range. Also sometimes if you click from one tower to the middle of the lane, but hit your ult about half way between it will cancel and he will continue moving towards the middle of the lane. It doesnt happen everytime, just when i really need my ult...

I know his kit has some problems, I just want to adress the safest one to do so: The Passive. There is no need to have that passive at all, as he may not need it against some match ups (Picking him against teemo, teemo going full ad).

I thought that was the point of Galio? Only to be picked against certain team comps since his Passive makes him very powerful against AP. Seriously he would be picked more if his kit allowed him to use his ult more effectively, most people just shoot Q's at people until they are almost dead and only use the ult when someone dives him under turret.

Well I play Galio a lot, I also thought his passive was not very useful, especially since team comps are mostly AD heavy, however I pick him even if the enemy is pure AD, I build him AP always, I get bonus AP from items like item 3001,item 3174,item 3111, not because I want magic resist but because I need the passives, but you know...I can't and won't complain about the lilttle extra AP I recieve.

I wouldn't know if changing his passive would be good, whenever the meta has to rely on more AP comps Galio will become a monster, and that could be ruined if his passive changes. What I would encourage is a little QoL tweak to his E, if allies speed up in the direction of the wind, why enemies don't slow down when walking in the opposite direction?

Edit: He got some slight help in patch 4.21 and I was happy about it, you probably had to burn flash for a good ult, just to be ruined by an unfortunate ability that accidentally hits you and displaces, silences, stuns, fears etc you and immediately cancel your channeling, and if that didn't happen then worst case scenario all of them have tenacity and flash away before you deal your damage. So it is nice that once you get a good ult there's no escaping, however it is still hard to avoid all the abilities that interrupt your channeling and you still have to probably burn flash to get a good ult, but at least he got some slight help.

actualy im with the guy above ... despite galio's kit being better vs ap its not like he gets destroyed just because enemy team is ad based

also as a tank he can still get thornmail

Gorzke1 votes

Yes, Thornmail is one of the best items for him, but doesn't provide Magic Resist, so Galio doesn't take the most of his kit purchasing that item. If he had a "Galio takes 15% reduced Magic Damage and has 25% Bonus Tenacity(Example and unoriginal)", he shouldn't be forced to build Magic Resist, ut would be one of the best champions out there against mages.

And his numbers could be balanced around the kit, instead of around Galio's posible build.

dude you aim for making galio an op champion if he cant use every item as effectively as he can use other items it means that he is normal, if he will be able to effectively use every item he will be able to counter anything he finds (and then they will nerf him just like they nerfed elise for that reason axaxaxaxxa)

what galios passive does is not forcing him into building mr but granting him some additional benefits when doing so (srsly this ap feels like its not realy accounted for)

Gorzke1 votes

Well, not really. Galio does need AP, mana regent and CDR to be usefull. What I am proposing is that, as other tanks (Amumu, Sejuani, Zac, etc ) he can build according to the enemy team without wasting power budget.

Again, it may not be forcing, but if you are awarded bonus 50$ at work for doing something and 0$ for doing other things (all bonus(, you will be doing the 50$ task more often and even when its not the beat option. It's not forcing, but reward for doing something against no reward for not doing something, and that usually end forcing things.

you said yourself that its a bonus galio can get ap from rabbadons like anyone else and bulwark im just saying that i dont feel forced to get that mr but even full mr gallio can tank an adc like a boss

But he isn't really a monster against Ap compared, to let's say Leona. Leona tanks better magic damage than galio (Eclipse is better than bulwark). I want to change the passive so he has a real anti magic damage passive , and his kit numbers can be balanced outside his passive.

WARLAG01 votes

But Leona doesn't have the ability to ridiculously heal with Eclipse, she can't Eclipse an ally, she doesn't get an AP boost with Eclipse, and if she gets an MR item she doesn't get some AP off of it. IDK, Bulwark gives Galio tankiness both armor/mr, sustain, and damage, seems better than Eclispe to me.

Gorzke1 votes

Yes, he is rewarded by buying Magic Resist. But he is not the best tank against Magic Damage dealers, and that was one of the things I want to change about it. Most, if not all of the proposed ideas makes him better against Magic Damage, either Reducing it, Blocking it or granting a bonus to Galio. That would have sense making Galio the best Magic Damage tank .

Also, regarding to "his kit numbers can be balanced outside his passive.". That is not true, because he must be balanced in a case he has 300 MR or if he has 100. If numbers were balanced without taking in count his passive, he would became either a monster with a proper build, and if he is balanced around his passive, he will be in the weaker side if he wants another build path. That is why I don´t want his passive.
