Pantheon's Aegis Assualt, why does it block AoE damage?

So, if im right, Pantheon's shield blocks damage coming from a certain direction. However I noticed he can even block a Veigar W if he's looking at Veigar. I can't say if he is op or underpowered, but I do not think he should be able to negate damage that is based on a large area. (Though if he gained resistance to aoe damage that would be okay.) Does anyone think it should depend on the direction damage is coming from similar to Bruam? So projectiles, auto attacks, deal no damage, while AoE deals reduced or full damage?

I was just asking a question, can Bruam ignore Karthus ult, area of effect and damage over time? I'm just saying, it makes no sense that it is able to block a Karthus ult, but only if you use it in Kathus'es direction.

Ok, i dont know if its a bug, or i just didnt see something that happened but im pretty sure that today i was playing master yi and i alplha on a pantheon who had his shield going and i did no damage at all, 0. He was like 100hp and he just ignored my alpha? There was no shields, no supports nearby, no phantom dancer... nothing. Only he and his E. Is it possible or did i miss something?

Because devs finally watched '300' and learned that spartan shields block everything as long as you hide behind them.
