I have played Malzahar as a ranked main champion during all of season 3 and all of season 4. The higher i climb the ladder (platinum II) the more and more upset people get when i pick him. I still do very well with him but is there a reason why people get upset and think i am trolling with him?

What makes Malzahar such a strong pick in soloq is that he basically doesn't have a margin of error. He will always do what Malzahar does, consistently and predictably. I guess that, the higher you climb, the more people expect you to able to get the same consistency with more difficult champions.
That said, if you're doing well with him, I'd encourage you to keep playing him regardless of how your team reacts. Comfort picks>Power picks.
With the right player behind them any champion is viable.
His damage is the only thing he has, really. That and pushing power.
If the enemy knows what they are doing, he is pretty much screwed due to having no mobility/escape mechanism that doesn't stun himself too.
That and QSS makes him really 'meh'.
Malz can 1v1 a whole lot of champs mid-late game, and his w shreds tanks. Plus he has one of the only reliable silences in the game right now, and it's AOE. He just inherently shoves very hard and isn't mobile, which makes him susceptible to ganks.
He has a consistently great solo queue win rate. Malz is definitely a champion with some serious and obvious weaknesses (no mobility, lowish range, stuns himself while ulting). But he's also got some serious strengths: he has amazing pushing power, a point and click suppress, and some of the highest damage scaling in the game. Late game, Malzahar can pretty much 100-0% anyone with his combo, given how much % health per second his pool drains. He's also a huge lane bully.
In my opinion, he's actually pretty strong for solo queue. He's a strong laner with great damage scaling and powerful single target lockdown. He can absolutely put the team on his back.
In lower Elo yes
People interrupt your ult and aren't out of position the higher you get though.
Any champ is viable if you can play them very well and against any matchup/most matchups
