Help! How do you keep a minion wave in place? When do I push or when to stop?

I feel like if I don't push a wave I miss out on cs, and I won't get turret plating. If I push too much I might get the cs and turret plating, but I have a fear that I might get ganked (even though I have vision), putting the enemy laner and jungler ahead. Sorry for being such a low elo scrub but, got any tips? Ty!

That depends on the champion, lane state, match up, and many other factors.

If you want a general rule though, it is best to freeze the wave as close to your turret as possible without the turret actually hitting the minions. This forces the enemy laner to take risks to cs. If he doesn't attempt to cs, then his minions will kill several waves' worth of his cs and he will miss out on all of the gold. Meanwhile, you remain safe under your tower.

If you kill him or he recalls without teleport, you can hard shove, get a plate, and recall to make it back to lane before the wave crashes back into your turret. If he has teleport and you are in a favorable match up, you can attempt to keep the wave frozen in front of your turret. If it wont freeze, just shove it quickly.

This GREATLY varies from champion to champion.

While laning against the enemy, keep your wave in front of your turret, just outside of its range.

  • They can't take your minions because they'll either be under your turret or then you can deal damage to them.
  • You aren't overextended and not susceptible to jungle ganks.
  • Their minions can kill your minions, which makes the enemy lose CS.

To get into this favorable position, if your wave is pushed, slowly autoattack minions or even just walk back. Let your minions die and wait for the next wave to hold it in place.

If they recalled or you killed them, use abilties or whatever to quickly kill down the enemy minions and get your wave under turret. Now.

  • You can recall without missing farm.
  • You can roam other lanes for kills.
  • You can take turret platings.
  • They just lost all that CS to the turret.

Hope this helps.

To prevent or slow a push, you merely only need to last hit the minions using single target spells or using just AA's. You should freeze when you're ahead; it prevents them from walking up to farm due to fear of jungle ganks. it can be affective if you're behind and trying to get jungle pressure from your own jungler. You want to push completely if you're backing. If not, simply pushing enough so that it will slow push back to you is good; IE, clearing enough minions so that there is an uneven minion wave on their side. This uneven wave will turn into a minion advantage for you because your minions will meet the wave first.

You keep a wave in place by matching your opponent's clear. If they aren't touching it, you don't touch it either. If they're auto'ing minions, you auto minions at the same time. This makes sure the wave stays right where it is.

It's tough, but you have to remember that you don't need to deal all the damage to a minion to get the CS. Literally all you need to do is get that last hit. Ideally, you want to let the minions get each other low, then finish them all off without using mana. It may seem boring or that you're standing around doing nothing, but that's how it goes. Use that time to poke at your enemy (note: "poke" does not mean "trade over and over until somebody dies". Take potshots, not fights).

That said, pushing does have its value. If you have more minions than your enemy, you effectively deal more damage, since fighting draws minion aggro and more minions means more damage. If you have a bigger wave, you have the advantage in trades. However, the harder you push, the more exposed you are, and the safer your enemy is. Only push when you know that the enemy jungler isn't on your side of the map ready to catch you out.

If the enemy is pushing into you, what you want to do is "thin the wave". Get the minions low without killing them. Even though their minions outnumber yours, you want to be able to finish them all off quickly so you can get aggressive. Let them push to you while you thin the wave, then kill all the minions and punish them for pushing up.

Honestly though, wave management is not a big deal in low elo. Focus more on mechanics, e.g., landing your skillshots, dodging, positioning, and movement. The player that has perfect wave management will still lose to the player who can actually land their abilities and not die while doing it.

How do you keep a minion wave in place?

Is the enemy also cs'ing? deal the same amount of damage to their minions as they are dealing to your's. Is the enemy away from lane? Then you generally need to have about 3 or 4 more enemy minions than friendly minions to freeze a wave. If there are even more enemy minions than that, then clear until the difference is only 4. If there are fewer minions than that, then your only option is to push, just a question of fast (dealing as much damage as possible to them) or slow (only attacking to cs).

When do I push or when to stop?

That's a tough question without a clear picture of what's happening at the moment in your match. Try to think if a push will cause you to gain and your opponent to lose.

If an opponent has left lane and you can push the wave into turret before they return, then they'll effectively lose gold and experience when the turret eats the wave, this is the clearest reason to push during the lane phase. This will also make the wave slowly bounce back towards your turret giving you time to back and return to lane just about when a stacked wave shows up at your turret so you've lost no minions. It helps to go back and watch your replays, find a push like this, and count how many minions you each lose to turret and other minions while away from the lane to see who lost the most xp.

Sometimes you push into turret because the enemy froze the lane in a bad place for you and you don't want to be stuck on the wrong side of the river for too long with the enemy jungler about. You might then just blow all your abilities to push the wave and then back to replenish even though you'll lose some cs because it was just the least bad option. Or maybe you weren't too worried about the enemy jungler so you went on the offensive the whole push to harass your opponent while you had a minion lead, then got some tower damage, then switched back to timid cs'ing mode to let the wave bounce back to your side.

Sometimes you let the wave bounce back to you because you know you can win a duel even with minion disadvantage (Trynd, a Jax after he's got some gold), so you just stand on the wrong side of the wave and dodge in and out of a bush, taunting the enemy to come up and try to get some cs. Then you freeze the wave in front of your turret and the enemy can't cs or you fight them and just milk the advantage for a while. Even standing in xp range is putting them in danger of a gank from your jungler. This is what happens in those games where you don't hear any action in your top lane and 15 minutes in you look at cs and realize one top laner is up two full items even if they only have like 1 kill.

Sometimes you just keep pushing into turret because you're a champion that finds it easy to harass an enemy when they're under turret and you also like dealing turret damage (Like a Yorick or a Caitlyn).

Sometimes you push because you like to roam and gank (LeBlanc, Bard, Talon, post-6 Twisted Fate and Kassadin), and pushing into the enemy turret creates space where you won't lose much in terms of minions and turret hp if you roam to try and influence another lane. This is another situation where it helps to watch your replays and count how many minions you lose each roam because players often get fixated on the value of a kill without remembering they lost two full waves and a plate for that kill, which comes out to a net negative for them.

Sometimes you're Singed (or a couple other champions when they're very fed) and no one can really catch you, but you also can't really kill them in lane before they get under turret where you really can't do much against them, so you clear from behind the enemy turret. In this rare situation you basically pin the enemy to their turret as they have no minions to tank the minion wave. You create so much space in your wave that you can roam anywhere you want and basically miss nothing. You have enough time to steal a jungle camp, auto the jungler a couple times just to make him mad, gank a lane whether or not you think you'll get a kill (again just to make them mad) and then return to your own lane just in time to catch the wave.

dont listen to anyone here in silver or bronze, because it doesnt matter on the champion or wtvr they are saying, for the most part its last hitting, and pushing the wave when your laner is gone, you freeze it when the jg is nearby doing scuttle and ping assist, and to slow push just auto attack low minions at low hp. There thats all. And i doubt you will be playing singed or anivia much so thats that have a good one
