@Riot: How is it fair to have so many Karthus counters, but no compensation buffs?

I remember, a long time ago, the reason karth's ult was nerfed in cd was because it provided "way too much" pressure. Now, you get champions like kindred, bard and taric who have ults (on a much less lower cd) which can simply negate karth's ult, and this is without including all the myriad of other champions and items like soraka and hourglass. Not only that, but for the mage update there was absolutely nothing offered to karth to compensate for his weak early game and slightly above average late game. I am fairly annoyed that cass gets her 4th rework, and karth gets nothing. Could you share your perspective on why this is?

because "fuck you buy new champs and buy skins for those new champs" is pretty much the answer. karthus is out dated and dead accept in very niche things the is no real valid reason to play him apart from the "herp de derp i press a button and their adc raged!"

If I remember right, they talked a little bit about Karthus on one of the recent League Community Podcasts. Reworks aren't meant to change a champion's identity, only modernize it. With most reworks, a champion's iconic abilities only usually receive minor tweaks at most. The problem with Karthus is that pretty much every ability (passive included) outside of maybe his wall is a staple of his kit. This makes making significant changes difficult without changing the identity of the champion. Plus, the first reworks to go through are the ones that have a stronger inspiration behind them. With the upcoming mage changes, these are by no means the only mages that could have used some love, but they were the ones that the teams had the clearest picture of what they could do to improve the champion, so they got pushed first. Karthus has been fairly underwhelming for a while now, and he is someone being looked at, but he's a bit trickier to figure out how to improve beyond simple buffs, so he's going to take a little longer. Hope this helped.

Jungle Karthus true terror: Ganks all the lanes at once.

Now, you get champions like kindred, bard and taric who have ults (on a much less lower cd) which can simply negate karth's ult,

Can, but they aren't reliably going to do so.

Karthus ult does hit all 5 opposing champions, and throughout most of the game all 5 aren't going to be right on top of one-another.

and this is without including all the myriad of other champions and items like soraka and hourglass.

While such mechanics can seriously mess with Karthus's ultimate, it's worth noting that timing is literally the only skill necessary in using Karthus's ult correctly. With global range you don't need to be in a specific place to use it. With point-click accuracy that doesn't even require point-click there's no skill involved in aiming it. With striking all 5 opponents there's no skill required in targeting.

The only skill necessary with Karthus's ultimate is timing it correctly. It can be timed around CDs of things that can counter it.

Not only that, but for the mage update there was absolutely nothing offered to karth to compensate for his weak early game and slightly above average late game.

Karthus's late game isn't slightly above average, it's absurdly strong. You just need to do well early/mid to get the late-game going.

His sustained-DPS, 1v5 potential, resilience against focus, team-fight prowess, and scaling all place him as one of the most terrifying champions in late-game.
