I tend to play melee champs and have a hard time against Ryze just looking for tips from people here who fare better with this match up. I know to avoid standing too close to the creep wave, but I find that shield and speed boost extremely frustrating to deal with.

Xelnex2 votesPlaying a melee champ against a ranged champion would be hard, and you will get punished for it. Unless you have a really good gap closer and damage dealer. This holds true for any champion out there, not just ryze vs anyone.
Tip
Only engage if -
a) You are ranged
b) He is over extended.
c) Your jg is nearby to gank.
How to counter Ryze?
a) Use long ranged stun before he can stun you. 
b) Use high poke units. 
c) Use wave clear beasts 
d) Use high mobility 
e) Use someone who can block the stun. 
6, Prolly the last one, but make use of his cooldowns, if he used his stun for some awkward reasons, it will be unavailable for a few seconds.

if you want to play melees, 
is ok at dealing with him, he's probably land some poke on you in which you can potentially turn around and stun him.
she also has decent sustain which ryze has none, so if it comes down to it play like a bitch and heal up while he could be potentially forced to back.
another ok one (Though probably the toughest to pull off imo is
with proper predictive play you can play around his snare with your w as there is a very slight cast/channel time for it, so if you can practice looking for the start of it, you can block it and his stun, if he also tries to fight you but you lack the timing, you can just parry his eq and avoid a lot of his damage, and if you're strong enough engage on him after that and stab him.
a more tank pick for your team, I would guess could be 
ryze is a very spammy type of champ you could probably get 1-2 passive procs if you slug it out with him, maokais early damage could lead to you bullying ryze and delaying him any gold to scale faster
also the item 
are really nice pickup against him for melees as it reduces his snare timer, meaning you can potentially catch him, even when his shields up
