These are the only 2 items in the game that cost 900+gold and dont have pieces that get built into it, assuming that you used all of your starting gold it would take you X minutes and X seconds to get a

kanacho3 votesThat would sort of ruin the point of BF and Needlessly large rod. They are the big ticket items that can put you massively ahead of an opponent if you outfarm/rush them. It's meant to be rewarding to those who either farm well or duel well to get enough gold to snowball the lane and carry.

think about it, if you're laning against someone and buy a needless and they come back with a fiendish codex, that's a pretty huge AP difference right there. and it shouldn't be easy to get the item since otherwise it makes it far too easy to snowball. I mean think of champions like riven who honestly have really easy build paths (two long swords in to brutalizer, pickaxe + longsword + 2 beads nobody ever builds in to tiamat, etc.) and like to snowball to have as high an impact as possible. all she needs is one kill in lane, she can finish the item she built a piece for and then boom, she gets powerful effects just like that (cdr, armour pen, aoe, etc.)
