How do OLD and NEW Malzahar players like the changes on PBE?

State if you're an OLD main or a NEW main before your post, and explain your thoughts.

I'm an OLD main, but I dropped that shit faster than an Ezreal drops "GGEZ" in chat after going 0/11/2, when they changed him to new Malzahar, so I'm a little out of the loop on his scalings and kit.

I do appreciate. Guess there are no more Malz mains.

i still played him after the rework

just that i didnt like how they changed the total ad scaling to bonus ad because now i can't abuse steraks anymore

New malz has such wonderful cancer builds lol

Draintankitem 3047 item 3146 item 3812 item 3071 item 3116 item 3065 DFT helps a lot here Deals surprising amounts of damage and heals sooooooooooo much all while kiting your enemy to death is also pretty tanky with scaling resist runes For this one i run manaregen quints as well with precision reds, Can 1v1 everyone

Anti AP item 3111 item 3102 item 3814 item 3001 item 3156 item 3116 It's fun as a mage to have to deal with 3 spellshields a magic damage shield and a 300 mr malzahar

I also used to have an hp centric build item 3047 item 3027 item 3116 item 3071 item 3053 item 3083

but i changed it to item 3047 item 3116 item 3151 item 3083 item 3071 item 3102

Those voidling can be quite strong black cleaver makes them especially deadly and its a nice cdr hp item it also provides movement as long as voidlings are attacking

new malz has such cool synergy with a lot of items

but after all the repeated changes and nerfs i kinda moved on

As an Old main.

The PBE changes are good, but a product of riot's own idiocy. The PBE changes go to show, that the rework was completely unnecessary to attempting to "fix" the champion for what ever reason riot felt he needed to be fixed. If you can give flat damage back to his ult, and let him keep the null zone with it, what exactly what the point of the whole fucking rework in the first place?! The net change after a year of screwing around, making nerfs and mechanical changes to a fundamentally flawed kit was that he gained a pseudo-spell shield and lost his AD viability due to voidling design changes. https://cdn.meme.am/cache/instances/folder253/500x/76527253/trump-statements-this-has-got-to-be-the-worst-trade-deal-in-the-history-of-trade-deals-maybe-eber.jpg

They simplified the play style of AP, because despite what people might say it's easier to play now, because so much of the champion has been removed from the player. Your voidlings are really nothing more than inconsistent E damage modifiers, you no longer need to voidling block with the spell shield, and you are basically forced into the exact play pattern because of the low power of his standalone skills.

Even after the PBE changes, there will still be literally no reason to play AD malzahar. Riot can't seem to get it through their thick skulls atop their high horse, that the reason people played AD malzahar wasn't because "it was AD"... I couldn't give a flying fuck about what kind of damage it was. The point was that through exaggeration of a single aspect of his kit, you could effectively have a completely new champion. Either a mage/assassin as AP, or a Minionmancer/ADC as AD. With the current design of voidling, there is literally no reason to sacrifice the damage elsewhere in your kit, to play it exactly the same, but with a higher proportion of your damage output on your W.

They should just do a full revert, because evidently EVEN MORE MECHANICS is considered a better state for the champion. The point is, if you wanted malzahar to be in the state of balance that he will be with the PBE changes, you could've gotten there much faster without reworking the champion, and just going from his previous state. All without changing his kit to be something which plays and feels completely different.

Dont really like the voidling changes tbh

You are now forced to use spells to gain additional voidlings

their movement is weak forcing you to build rylais essentially

they get killed by a basic attack regardless of hp welcome to league of runaans, just ask yorick players how fun such a dumb mechanic is

also don't forget that 1 of his spells is targeted and the other is the voidswarm itself

leaving malzhar with 1 spell to charge additional voidlings out of lane

changes overal feel like shit to me

Old main, they should just revert the rework entirely

I was an old Malz main and when they reworked him with the MYMU I just refused to play him until they nerfed his passive which made him a retarded untouchable pushbot, so during that time I just stopped playing the game altogether.

After that it was all fine until they changed Voidlings to have 2 charges and spawn instantly with no delay between the two charge cast which I thought was unhealthy so I stopped playing again (only Malz this time).

With this mini-revert it seems I get back the Malzahar I fell in love with and not this shitty watered down double, also even if the Voidlings turn out to be shit (no more bonus MS towards target with E seems a pretty hard hit, but most importantly no more MS towards target being ulted) at least it will feel like old Malzahar more.

I still really dislike the addition of his current passive and moving voidlings to an active spell. Since voidlings are an active now, Riot has to try and make sure that E and Q and R aren't strong enough that he can just spam those, as he's not gated into deciding whether or not to use his 4th spell to waste that voidling.

Really just added bloat to the kit and made it more difficult to balance imo...

But these changes on the PBE look like steps toward the old malz, which is a good start.

So, I'm an old main too..and I'm waiting for videos of him on the PBE to surface...

It looks like great changes for AP Malz. One problem for.me though. After playing Malz as AP for years I moved on to the world of AD tower munching objective taking Malz.

These voidlings won't do an AD build any good from what I see on the number side of things. It would take 4 of these pests to do the damage of one voidling from back in the day.

More than that, in mid or top lane i don't think there is a single AoE ability in the game that won't kill a wave of voidlings instantly. Unless my target is cc'd

Then in team fights, how are they supposed to live if a stray spell snacks them?

I'm used to a voidling with 475HP Perhaps voidlings are supposed to be combustible, and meant to be back up to try again in 8 seconds. And that's just life...?

I'll just have to try it myself I suppose, but I'm quite nervous.

I can't really answer what his current situation is. I dropped him like a baked Urgot potato. Couldn't make him work in lane.

voidlings now have actual HP so i don't think AoE will one shot them as easily as live. They only get oneshot by towers and champion auto attacks. Who knows, we'll have to wait till live to see if voidlings are still useless into AoE.

Pre-rework voidlings had over 400HP. PBE voidlings have something like... 65+10 per level or something dumb like that.

I'm both, and I feel like the changes are great. They merged the old and new versions of malz together and ensure that he can't be good as a support (thank fucking god).

I occasionally used old malz to support in the early days, but i don't think that playstyle should be relevant enough to be common. But you summed up what i was thinking.

I'm not a MAIN of Malzahar but I do quite love the champion and have been sad seeing the changes to him. When I first played old Malzahar, I enjoyed him for a while, but then he just felt TOO easy, since you could just drop an E and take 75% of someone's health. New Malzahar I played a bit more, loved him to death because I love minion mancers and people could still get away from the minions despite building Rylai's so I was fine with the changes, he didn't stomp but he had a chance to. The changes from looking at them(since no one else seems to have actually played them either), seem like mostly nerfs tbh. He gets 20% more AP damage for less voidling damage and less reliability(again).

His Q now from what we talked about on another post is probably going to be pretty crap(despite getting 10% more AP ratio) because of the delays on the ability.

They haven't mentioned if his voidlings will spawn instantly or not from the patch notes so that's also likely to stay as it wasn't mentioned as changed, and his voidlings will likely die from any and all spells at any point in the game since they'll barely have any defenses and barely have any HP(200HP, 50 armor, and 25 MR at level 18), while most mages have one spell that's AOE that can do around 300 damage) and they're sure to be killed with auto attacks, likely before dealing damage because they have no speed boost toward their target. Also considering you'll only be able to have two out at a time I feel the ability is going to be pretty pointless(unless they still spawn voidlings from one attacking, then it MIGHT be somewhat crap but at least bearable)

His E doesn't really do any damage now, and probably won't do much damage again, I can't see 10 extra damage for every 100 AP being a lot considering as Malz you'll be wanting items that don't give a LOT of AP(Rylais, Liandries for sure) as your core build and that will cut your power. Most of the time an AP mid laner has about 300-500 AP. I'd imagine Malzahar being on the lower end of the spectrum with around 300 which would be 30 damage a tick. Not a whole lot considering most of his abilities are probably either going to deal minimal damage or miss(not reliable anymore),

His ultimate is the only really good change, as it's giving him a ton of damage in it, but that's going to ruin all of his other abilities as their reliability has been cut down tremendously and he's going to just be an ult bot. His other abilities will only have a guarantee of damage when he ults someone, and that'll HAVE to be the ADC or his minions will get chopped down before they do anything, and even then if only two are allowed to be spawned at a time it wouldn't take much to cut that damage out.

So my final thoughts, Malzahar is being turned into an ult bot and probably still won't be very good. I feel like they're just giving him less and less reliable damage despite the fact that he hasn't been that good for a while and even when he was good AS A SUPPORT(he was only good as support during that time, so much so that Malzahar mid wasn't even SHOWN on OP.GG as one of his roles), he was at 50% win rate. I'm all for killing support Malzahar so he can be played mid, but I don't think this will make him able to play mid.

I've mained old malzahar and adapted to the new one so here are my thoughts I've posted in another thread.

Its a step in the right direction, in a frugal sense. Until they put some of the base damage back on e he'll still be considered garbage pick now that his voidlings are so easy to kill now. They'll just die by the time they make it into auto range since they are so slow. The cast range needs to be increased or something.

I don't feel the increased delay on his q for 10% ap is justified, it is already an awkward skillshot and prerework was much stronger with 3 seconds of silence.

I'm glad they put some damage back into his ult, sure it isn't anywhere near the same strength as before, but factoring the refresh mechanic it might work out.

Overall these changes look like an improvement, but I won't be optimistic :)

Old Malzahar Main.

The changes on PBE are good for solo lane Malz however...

Overall the changes to Malzahar as of the next iteration from his pre-rework self have:

Weakened and made Voidlings a less diverse part of his kit which killed his options Lowered his base damage Lowered his ratio on Nether Grasp and Zull Zone Forced him into a cookie cutter combo which eliminated freedom of spell casting Made him slower Lowered his attack range Lowered his armor

And in return...

He gets a shield lasting for .25 seconds once proc'd.

Woop de fucking doo.
