A Little Advice Please (I need advice)

Okay... I want to keep this as short and brief as possible. Everything that should be in bold is the main key points (the stars, I can't bold my stuff? QQ) but I want to get some rant in for you guys to understand me more as well. I'm not blaming my team and sometimes I admit, the enemy team is just really too good and I can't possibly see myself winning under those circumstances. So, to begin;

I'm fairly new to league of legends compared to most people, however, I can't really be considered a newbie. I've already played this game for a little over a year and sunk in almost 2k games. And through all of this, I'm still in silver trying to claw my way up to gold. Here's the thing, even after 2k games, I'm still lost as all hell as to what to do in this game.

To be fairly honest, the game for me is considerably easy during the laning phase whether I win or lose. The mindset that I developed after all the guides and advice threads that I have already read is, "don't be the reason that my team loses". I hold onto this train of thought and always try to avoid any situations where I end up being the entire reason my team loses, although, there are exceptions regardless of how hard I try.

Like I said, brief: I'm not crying, not bashing and NOT blaming. I want to know what it is that I'm doing wrong and that I could possibly do better. I run tactics and strategies through my head constantly playing this game and nothing seems to be working. I always feel like some games the weight is too much to carry on my team's side and then sometimes I'm too heavy for my team. I need to find a balance in which when my team is too heavy, I can somehow carry them and when I'm too heavy I put myself in a position for me to be carried.

**My weakest phase through the entire game phases of league are:

  1. Grouping: When and where should I group?
  2. Split pushing: When do I splitpush, when should I stop?
  3. Teamfights: What is MY role in a teamfight, when should I actually go for a teamfight, when should I force a teamfight and when should teamfights be avoided?
  4. Follow ups: When should I follow up when a teammate initiates? When is it not a good idea to hop in with an initiator? What exactly IS an initiation!?
  5. Objectives: When and how should I go about getting objectives?
  6. Temper Management: Best ways to keep my temper under control? I crack. A lot. I get frustrated. I rage and I flame... it's gotten better lately, but sometimes it slips and I can't get a grip on it. Best practices to stay calm?
  7. Strong Finish: How do I finish a game strongly and how can I relay this kind of finish to my team?**

I don't know, I want to get better at this game and I want to be NICE and FRIENDLY doing so. And even though I generally am, whenever I play league I turn into such a competitive loser that I just often get covered with salt and end up flaming when I know I shouldn't. It could be that strong desire to just climb out of silver and finally move up a rank, but I don't know.

Whatever you guys got would be much appreciated.

ONE MORE THING:

BEST ROLES FROM BEST TO WORST - MID/ADC/SUPPORT/JUNGLE/TOP

What role I'd like to main: ADC

Reason I play mid more: I suck at communicating with my supports half the time and sometimes the enemy support is just eons better and it makes laning a pain when that actually happens to be the case. Especially if their support AND adc are better then both me and my support, it puts me in a tight spot

  1. Typically you group after the first tower falls. It can happen sooner, usually over an objective like dragon.

  2. Split pushing imo should only be done if your team is consistently losing team fights or has a way to REALLY drag out a fight 4v5. (such as high wave clear along with strong disengage) you should also only split push with certain champions. Ex: vayne can split push very well, victor can not.

  3. Assuming your mid or adc your role is to eliminate high priority targets (usually their mid and adc) whoever does the most damage and is easy to kill is your target. You should also NEVER be far from your team after lane phase as you will be an easy pick unless you are fed. (some exceptions apply for champions with built in escapes like tristana and corki)

Note: even if you are being dived by the enemy tank just do everything you can to dish out as much damage to their carries before you die. Do NOT attempt to kill the tanks until they are all that is left to kill.

  1. Follow up EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. unless it is clear suicide or you have no vision. Also learn to recognize the difference between someone going in for a trade vs a kill.

Note: in lane phase if you blow the enemys flash and still have yours you won the trade. Do not flash to chase them unless a kill is guaranteed.

  1. Any time an objective is 'free' (enemy team on other side of the map) take it. Other wise look to force fights over objectives if your team is ahead. If you are behind focus on when the enemy tries to take dragon or baron or something and push a tower or contest if you are not that far behind.

  2. Accept that your team will almost always make mistakes.... Stupid ones.... And accept that the only thing you can control in game is yourself.

  3. Always take advantage of your numbers. If you just won a team fight get your tank(s) to dive whoever is left under their towers if they jave enough hp. If you are not healthy enough to do that back and take baron if it is up. Once you have baron go 1-3-1 (one top 3 mid 1 bot) and push all the lanes. This is a fairly effective method to end.

tl;dr: I agree with a lot of things, but there are a few mistakes, and I add some precisions.

{quoted} 2. Split pushing imo should only be done if your team is consistently losing team fights or has a way to REALLY drag out a fight 4v5. Good advice. Split pushing is a strategy for when you are not able to win a fair fight. If you won lanes, if you are ahead, don't try tricky strats. Just force a big team fight 5v5.

No, this is wrong. Take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwE9wPwHCuU&index=4&list=PL9RdXhXESRJzgY_SwHB8T-cZxXljWhQvz tl;dr: stay in range of only 1 person and attack it, and it doesn't matter who, until they have spent all their important/dangerous resources. Then and only then, go in and try to eliminate the high priority targets.

  1. Follow up EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. unless it is clear suicide or you have no vision.

Sadly, it's quite often that it is clear suicide or you have no vision. So there is no easy rule.

Also learn to recognize the difference between someone going in for a trade vs a kill.

This is a very, VERY good advice. Please take it to heart, OP :)

Note: in lane phase if you blow the enemies flash and still have yours you won the trade. Do not flash to chase them unless a kill is guaranteed.

Yes, so much yes. A won trade is so much better than a failed killed. Don't be greedy. Blowing flash is cool. Go back to CS'ing, and out-farm him?

  1. Accept that your team will almost always make mistakes.... Stupid ones.... And accept that the only thing you can control in game is yourself.

**This is maybe the most important advice of all. So much games are won or lost on attitude alone. ** Don't blame them, support them, forgive them, explain to them. Don't worry, you'll win in the end. (OK, sometimes not, but that's still the good attitude to have ;p)

  1. Always take advantage of your numbers. If you just won a team fight get your tank(s) to dive whoever is left under their towers if they jave enough hp. 1-3-1 is fairly effective but very dangerous. If they send 3-0-2 and win, then they can group mid and play 3 vs 5. Once again, no easy answer, it's too much context-dependent .

So, there are a few things that I have problems with.

first off, if I'm ahead or fed, it's fairly easy for me to rotate around the entire map and help my team take out the FIRST towers. The struggles honestly comes around when I have to take out the mid towers. That becomes quite a problem, as well as trying to get the team to group. another thing is actually trying to force the team fight. I for the life of me don't know how to force a teamfight and struggle actually baiting fights as well.

Everything else is a point well taken and even when we win a fight I have people who just back off without trying to nab towers or an objective and it really drags games out. So going based off of my own actions, how would I go about solo rushing towers?

To force an objective simply make sure the enemy sees you heading to or gathering atbsaid objective. If they start rotating to meet you then you can aim to pick one or two off before they all get there or just start taking the objective.

Note: normally you dont want to announce where you are on the map but if you are baiting it ia an exception.

As far as rushing towers, having 2nd dragon and / or baron buff helps alot. Apart from that specific champions can push well and others can not.

For mid i recomend yasuo or zed to push quickly. For adc tristana or vayne.

Hey there. I was in the exact same boat with you as well. I have been playing for a little over a year, and I was struggling to get to Gold as well a few months ago. However, when I tried again last summer, I was surprised at how easy it was.

Generally, the best advice I can give for ranked is to:

  1. Learn every role. Learn at least 3 champions for each role so you aren't on LoL Wiki during the loading screen.
  2. Play whoever you are good at. It is low ELO, it doesn't matter. I got to Gold by playing Cho'gath and Jax (before the pre-season).
  3. Be prepared to invest a ton of your time into League.

In champion select, be sure to have a clear idea of who you want to play in relative to the team compositions. Prioritize whoever you enjoy the most; each division takes around 7 to 8 games average + promos. That is literally around 10 hours per division. If you don't like the process, you will wear yourself out quickly. As well, if you are able to master a champion and play each match-up well, or at least decently, you will have a fall back pattern and you won't get caught off guard.

In terms of more specific advice, I will skip over the basics and laning phase assuming that you already know them with your experience. Generally,

  1. In low ELO, the best advice I have ever received for team fights is that It is better for 5 people to be doing the wrong thing than for one person to be doing the right one. You can't accomplish much with yourself only. If your team wants to take Dragon after wiping out half the enemy team instead of going for inhibitors and nexus turrets, just follow them and don't get picked off yourself.

This point leads to the topic of grouping. In low ELO, ALWAYS GROUP. Don't assume that your teammates will play safe while you split push. Unless you are playing a champion who excels in split pushing such as Tryndamere or Shaco, refrain from split push when both teams are almost grouped up.

  1. As mentioned earlier, you shouldn't trust your team to not ace themselves when you split push. However, sometimes it is still a good idea to do it. Generally, I only split push on top laners with TP up. The moment a fight breaks out, I TP in. On any other champion, it is just better to stick with the herd.

  2. Your role depends on which champion you play. For your top roles, mid lane champions usually try to pick off a priority target on the other team before the fight. ADCs should just hit whoever they can without putting themselves in danger unless that target is the tank. The order of importance goes from: Soraka > ADC = Mid > Fighters (top or jg) > Juggernauts (top or jg) > Tanks (top, jg, or support).

  3. As mentioned in point 1, if you see everyone else going in, go in as well. It might be a 5 man dive onto a Malphite with Ori ball and the enemy Yasuo and MF are standing menacingly in their back lines, but by then, your team is probably going to be aced anyways, so just go in.

  4. Always keep wards on Baron and Dragon. There should be no excuse not having vision on them with the new blue trinket. Generally, inhibitors are the most important objects. However, a good Baron or the 5th Dragon can be just as vital to a victory. You should decide based on the situation, but if in doubt, just go for the inhibitors. On a side note, it is not worth losing towers for dragon or Rift Herald. Games last too short to stack Dragons now, and Rift Herald should be reserved for when you get ahead or when your tower isn't in danger.

  5. Temper management isn't that essential for winning, as bad as that sounds. I have people who rage pretty much every game, and they still managed to get to gold, platinum, and even diamond. If you don't want to tilt because of your temper, just mute everyone. It is also a good idea to take a break or play some ARAM after. I understand the frustration that comes with the ELO grind, but at the end of the day you can only climb by making plays yourself.

  6. Once you get a lead, always pressure objectives. To end the game on a strong note, you need to zone off the enemy team from getting any more resources as you take objectives. Light up their jungle with wards, and simply fight them whenever they contest an objective. The best way to get your teammates to began capitalizing on their lead and working towards the nexus is to ward. Let your team know whats going on, and keep the enemy team close to their base.

Climbing from SIlver to Gold frankly isn't difficult. It just take a lot of time and determination to see it through. Be prepared to invest at least 50 hours from Silver 5 to Gold 5. And remember to take breaks! If you ever get stuck, try to learn more champions and just keep trying. If you ever need some good champions to climb, I highly recommend Cho'gath. He is versatile, and most people can't handle his sustain.

Ranked games feel more like tests of will rather than skill. If you keep playing, you will get to gold eventually.

Thank you. I have taken a lot of your advice to heart and games are turned around rather quickly now going based on this. Though it does pain me sometimes to start taking that baron at horrible times or walking straight into an enemy trap as a team, I much rather get aced as a team now then trying to 1v5 the entire team. Most of the time, it worked out most favorably, even though I am dying much more then I want to now.

I normally stick to my two main people to climb, Ahri and Vayne if I can. Though I have a fair amount of games with good much champions, I just spam champs in normal and stick to a very strict select few in ranks.

Now you said to invest 50 hours, is this being strictly on a winning spree or is this if I keep a constant 50% win ratio? As to the point about learning 3 champs at every role, tbh, that's a bit tough for me. In total, that would be knowing how to play 15 champions proficiently. Unfortunately, I can't do that nor do I think I have the time to learn 15 champs at such a high level. I do fairly well on the select champs I have, but to be honest when I get in tough situations they can turn into my worst champs very quickly.

I do appreciate the advice, though and the time you've taken out to help me. So thank you very much. As well as to everyone else above, thank you as well. Any other tips, guidance and practices are always welcome!

Don't forget that a champion can do multiple roles. Like Shen, I can play him top, mid, jungle and support. Or Vladimir and swain both can top and mid etc.

It is good to hear that you are winning your games!

Unfortunately, the amount of time required is up to your MMR more so than your win rate. Assuming you have ~ high Silver MMR, you will gain a bit over 20 points and lose a bit lower than 15 points in Silver tier. When I first tried to climb to Gold many months ago, I gave up around high SIlver 1 even though I started in Silver 1 from my placements. It is important to realize that 20 points per win with regular MMR equals a minimum of 7 games per division assuming you win all games.

That is around 6 and a half to 7 hours. Now, multiply that by 5, and then add 3 games to account for Gold promotion matches, and you get 35+ hours. I speculated that it takes around 50 hours assuming 67% or higher win rate. Earlier in the season, I observed my friends to see which of them can climb the highest, and to deduce which quality is most important for climbing. The only solid result is the amount of time one is willing to invest - moving up the ELO ladder takes an absurd amount of time once you stop to consider it.

You can find the amount of time you need by the forumlar:

(avg. game time) x {Amount of LP needed / [(win rate) x (amount of LP per win) - (1 - win rate) x (amount of LP per loss)]} *Does not include promos

*Does not work if your net LP gain is negative.

To explain, you are basically finding the average amount of LP gained per game given current win rate and MMR. Then, you translate that into the total amount of games you need by dividing the amount of LP you need by the avg amount earned. After, the amount of games is multiplied by avg. game time to find the total amount of time you needed.

It sounds complicated, but it really isn't. If you don't have a problem with this, you can even apply statistics to this and find the proportion of "effective" games from the Standard Deviation and averages of your past games... but I digress.

If your win rate is around a solid 50%, that is not bad assuming your MMR is high enough. But take a look at the formula, every increase in your win rate or MMR increases the effectiveness of your games in a polynomial manner (think Morderkaiser Q). It is imperative to brush up your win rate. I highly recommend that you practice more normal games to further improve your champions. Especially champions such as Vayne and Ahri, they have some of the highest skill ceilings in the game, and getting better at them will only help you win more, and subsequently climb a lot faster.

Which brings me to the 2nd topic. Yes, you need to know 15 champions. You can play one champion such as Cho'gath in 3 roles (which is why I recommended him), so learning champions such as Cho'gath can drastically improve your win rate. You do not have to be a master at them, but consider this: the above formula is really ONLY effective if you play by your average performance. If you get caught off guard into a poor match-up on a champion you rarely played, or worse, into a role you rarely played, that is literally a waste of close to 2 x (game time) because you will probably lose and have to redeem yourself in another match.

It is really really important to be able to play every role well. Multiply the amount of time you needed by 5, and divide it by the number of roles you can play well. Granted, this method is pretty crude since you won't always get your worse role as often as your best one, but it shows how much of an impact learning just a couple champions can have. You are going to have to invest 50 hours or more, why not just take the time to play ~5 games on some new champions?

And of course, best of luck to your climbing!
