PSA: Getting Carried Doesn't Make You A Worse Player

Brain Errör 404··130 votes·5,427 views

Get your ego out of your ass and sit down and enjoy a win where you don't have to carry. I believe people lose more games because they "have" to carry instead of just being carried. If you see someone on your team popping off, they're making calls and they're doing everything right -- follow them to victory. Learning how to get carried is just as important as learning how to carry.

If you feel like you have 0 hope of winning your lane, see what happens. Maybe your team will start doing well and from there, help them out and give up on yourself carrying the game. It'll be too late if you start feeding whiles your team is building up their advantage more. You don't always have to be the heroes in your games. Scrap your KDA and make the appropriate sacrifices to win.

^ Being carry able is a skill that people really need to learn. You dont have to win your lane, just don't feed it.

This is how I get to Gold as a support main. Also if you are a top laner and your like 0/8 you are still usefull, especially if you can splitpush, buy zz'rot, support items, anything. You can be a productive team member still. If adc is 8/0 and top is 0/8 and adc flames top, adc is trash.

Nick Da Chip7 votes

This is a good mindset. I wish the rest of the community would follow suit.

Trick2g shows a good example of this

This exact situation happen to me, as the toplaner. All I did was buy Zz'rot and made sure the fed darius went nowhere but to clear the massive waves. I got carried, and I was grateful to have a supportive team. Honestly, just the experience of having the team understand the situation and play at their best knowing I was still in the game and making an impact really was a relief. Hell, they were happy to get a free kill off 5v1'ing the Darius a couple times. Sad part was that the Darius got flamed for staying in lane all game. :( .... ;)

But chances are, if you're 0/8, you're not going to do things that can help the team. The people going 0/8 and building full damage and diving 1v3. If they were concerned about winning, they wouldn't be 0/8, which is exactly what this post is about.

That's pretty much the basic difference between a high ELO player and a low ELO player. If someone is outclassed in high ELO, they understand this and try to minimize the gold lead the enemy can get out of their losing lane, while relying on the teammates that aren't losing as much or are just winning. Sometimes, it's even worth to abandon the lane that can't be saved and go gank a lane (even if you're a laner yourself) for your teammate to give him the advantage or even snag yourself a kill and get a return objective.

The basic premise between a high ELO and low ELO is that in high ELO, everyone strives to be a teammate while in low ELO, everyone strives to be the leader. High ELO players usually cooperate well with each other (and of course there are exceptions as well) while low ELO players don't work well with each other because of the conflicting ideologies on how a team should function.

Is true. Last game, I went 0-3 Riven in lane at 3mins with 8 cs. Team was like, "GG Riven noob stop feeder the jax". I then sat back and stopped fighting him. Lost first tower blood, whiles giving up first blood and getting rekt. I let my team do their job and then I ended the game 14/3 with most cs in game. Huehuehuehue. Team carry op.

It's not fun getting carried, because you don't feel impactful.

It's another reason why people don't like playing support.

Playing support means you're giving up carrying, and relying on someone else to carry. When they're behind, you're even more behind. When they're ahead, you're still behind, just not as much.

As a support, you(usually, excluding Brand/annie/lux/nid supp and whatnot) are helping the carries carry.

People who enjoy relying on others are likely the ones who enjoy this role the most.

It's not always a matter of ego, people just don't like being attached to someone forever

Brain Errör 40418 votes

Nor do you have to be. And supports, in their own rights, DO carry games. You know the AMOUNT of times I've been CUCKED by a support trying to go all rambo on the adc? A good support is to be feared. They do INDEED help carry games. People need to stop shafting the support role as, to be honest, a REALLY good support and ADC combo is freaking detrimental to the game. Even more so than an ADC/Mid or mid/jg combo.

Reason being, supports are the initiators, the utility AND the peel all at once. And that's.... well friend, that's a lot. Your definition of fun obviously differs from mine. Bottom line when it comes to climbing the ladder, for me personally, is winning. I get frustrated when I do bad. That's all of us. We all want to do the best. However, if I'm going to be carried, then I will.

Every time I play Lee Sin, if I get myself a nice early lead I go 2 damage items. If I don't end by 25minutes into the game, this is the exact quote I type in chat "Got the only damage items I'm getting. Late game's rolling around, I tried ending earlier but I couldn't, going tank now. Mid and bot, I leave the carrying in your hands". I strap up my tank items and I peel for my carry. By doing so, I strive for that 50%+ wr on the Sin. I also do it with all my other junglers too, except Udyr. I play that champ to carry.

Troll for Trump1 votes

CC isn't carrying.

It has to be dmg, whether AP or AD; that's what qualifies as a carry. It doesn't matter ifyou have just pure cc, without some form of dmg, you won't be able to do a thing without it. It's why a 5 tank team won't work.

When you're just cc, you're going to feel useless a lot more than if you were just doing pure dmg.

Sure, you might tank hits, sure you have cc, but, when you get fed, it doesn't feel quite right.

Carry doesn't mean damage.

Carry means you are taking actions that are winning the game. If you are a janna and you are successfully keeping everyone from even touching your adc, and that adc is killing everyone as a direct result of your peel, you are carrying, not the adc. The adc is just doing the damage.

IF you are just sheilding the adc and the adc is juking everything and you don't even have to throw a tornado, the adc is carrying.

If malph keeps 5 man ulting your team and the resulting wombo is killing it, it doesn't matter if he does no damage, malph is the problem you need to solve, hes the reason the team is winning.

Troll for Trump2 votes

Carry needs to be the one doing the dmg. The carry is the one who is most essential for a team to succeed. What use is a Janna's peel if there's nothing to be peeled for? What use is Malphite's bulkiness when he has nothing to protect?

No matter what utility or tank champ is picked, their purpose is to protect the dmg that's being dished out by other things.

Even if they're 0/5 in a team with a Twitch and four tanks that are doing well, the Twitch is always going to be the carry.(Doesn't mean Twitch is useless, he just has a poor KDA)

Atanchan1 votes

Actually, the Twitch is always going to be the marksman.

Y'know, which was renamed to that partially because people like you can't really handle a word having two definitions.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Never said that ADCs were the only carries. You just have to be doing dmg. Juggernauts, Assassins, mages, all carries.

Atanchan1 votes

Still, you're talking about the role. Someone you give farm priority so that they scale into later than the game than someone who doesn't get it.

This is why I prefer the DOTA terminology. You don't call those people carries, because supports can carry, you call them cores.

Nick Da Chip14 votes

"CC isn't carrying."

What? Do people really think this way? Tanking, Cc'ing, warding, etc isn't a way to carry? Damage is needed to kill opponents sure, but if someone is pulling off awesome CC, tanking like crazy, etc etc damage is pretty easy to pull off if you are in that role.

If the community really thinks carrying is all about damage no wonder it's so toxic.

Brain Errör 4042 votes

I cba to argue with him after he typed that up. I felt like I would be wasting my own rationality to an irrational human being.

Miku Append3 votes

It's probably a low elo ADC main. Sssh they'll never learn. Let them suffer.

RocketRelm3 votes

Yes, people really think this way. When I say "Morgana Mid can scale really hard and carry from mid lane", and people respond with "but she does no damage", it makes me cringe for so many reasons.

Scaling isn't just damage. Being utterly immortal while rolling through the enemy team, is carrying. Doing more damage than the enemy mid while bringing the lockdown of a support, thus giving your team a super density of peel, is carrying. I would mention split push carrying too, but that's a kind of damage.

Elikain4 votes

#"Morgana does no damage".

Malphite landing 3 5-man ults in a row getting you baron and singlehandedly winning you the game due to his engages, but its not carrying because he only stunned the entire enemy team instead of killing them 8) kappa.

Elikain1 votes

#To carry is to have a meaningful impact #on the outcome of the game. Which means that doing damage isn't the only way to do that. Your definition comes from your own narrow-mindedness and that is to do something impactfully visible - it's hard to ignore your health dropping. You don't want to get into a fight with a champion that can drop you before you can drop him.

What enables safe damage dealing is CC (utility). It comes in the form of initiation or peeling. Heals forgive past mistakes as the damage done to you is healed back up, allowing you to try and try again without obvious risks.

Shields forgive future mistakes as you get into a fight knowing how much punishment can you take, in order to trade. So there are risks involved but it's a calculated risk you can afford to make because the enemy should be risking more than you.

Other effects (like general utility auras) are worst when it comes to visibility as the mere presence of a champion providing them changes the outcome of the battle already but in the form of invisible stat boosts.

One other form of carrying is** damage absorption/reduction.** I know this sounds kind of dumb but having the ability to take the damage intended for your teammates without dying, resulting in the enemy team having less resources to spend defending something from your team, is also valuable. Damage reduction is valuable because it allows your team to appear more durable then they are, in any given point in time.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Which means that doing damage isn't the only way to do that. Your definition comes from your own narrow-mindedness and that is to do something

Not quite. Resorting to insults doesn't make your argument any more valid.

I already answered to this stance a million times. Carry has to be the form of dmg. CC and tankiness will always be helpful. but not as necessary as raw damage. The carry(ies) are required components of everygame, be it Juggernaut, ADC, or Mage.

In a teamfight, it's a battle of who will reach a certain dmg threshold. While tanking/shielding is one way to go about winning the teamfight(by making the dmg relatively less impactful to the overall threshold) you still always need the dmg to reach their threshold. All tank teams can never work. But an all squishy glass cannon team can work, and that's why.

Fundamentals of teamfighting is to keep the dmg as high as you can, and reaching the threshold. Other more complicated components are added on as a subgroup of sorts.

Elikain1 votes

Funny. I always thought that being narrow-minded meant to not be open to other interpretations or solutions, other than your own. Looking at the world only through your eyes and thinking that only your opinion is the correct one. It was never classified as an insult nor did i meant it as an insult. I was merely pointing out your apparent state of mind as you're clearly warping the definition to carry to fit your bill, when in reality a support can carry a Marskman's ass if they do a pretty damn good job at peeling or healing/shielding, literally allowing a Marksman to not even be mechanically better than the opponent to win.

Being a damage dealer does not classify a champion as a carry type. You can have a champion that can one shot with one spell but if that champion never gets to get their damage off a single time on an enemy, you're contributing the same as an empty spot on the team. You can also have that Malphite top being the pivotal champion that wins your team every teamfight, just from the threat of his engage and he'd be the carry - that champion that the enemy team can't deal with.

Being a carry isn't a role or a position. It's a title to be given to the teammates who performed admirably and contributed hugely to the overall success of the team. And that means it's determined on a game per game basis.

That's exactly what you're doing. Everything that conflicts with your opinion is "wrong."

Being the dmg means you're the carry, that's that. Peeling and tanking aren't carrying, they're supporting the dmg get out reliably. It doesn't matter what happens, the damage will always be the carry.

Elikain1 votes

Being the dmg means you're the carry

Champions who contribute the most to a win are the carries. Which means that a plethtora of specializations are taken into account, besides the damage dealing.

Being a carry is not a role. Being a carry is a title given to players who contribute the most to a win. Every champion contributes in their own way to a win. If your support practically gives you every kill on a silver platter without you having to even do anything but AA, then he's carrying your ass because he makes your job a no brainer. You need to recognize this, instead of thinking you deserve to be given things because you're the damage dealer.

If you play like garbage and your support practically prevents 95% of your mistakes that would have costed you your life, then you're getting carried by your support again. You got carried through the most important phase of your laning so that you could have a decent late game.

Your other lanes can carry your team to victory because they're doing good and they're translating their advantage to your team's advantage, they don't have to deal the most damage, they just have to help you kill the people who hold the gold or help you take down objectives.

Troll for Trump1 votes

Then we differ on opinions.

Carry is a role, not a prestigious title

LA Losty1 votes

Ive always said the supports are the playmakers of the laningphase. They are usually the ones getting the carry fed, and a good support can turn a won botlane into a lead elsewhere. Ive had games where my support literally won my lane for me, even though i was mid. He played well botlane, gave us vision and helped the jungler make calls and he roamed midlane setting me up for several kills.

Cryo004 votes

How do people not like getting carried ? It's literally one of the best ways to win the game. You get a win despite you being behind/feeding. Also, you get to see the salt of the person who beat you.

grug4 votes

getting carried without realising how and why; will make you a worse player.

Most players that carry hard will get to a point where they can effectively 1v2 which relieves enormous amounts of pressure elsewhere and a lot of times people will follow the 20-0 ryze mindlessly while the enemy team is splitting side lanes while the ryze's team group mid like ARAM to accomplish nothing.

its OK to get carried but its absolutely not OK to go into each game with the mindset of getting carried, that is a recipe for disaster.

This is especially true for low ELO where people somehow magically forget to farm/push lanes and follow the most fed guy for no reason other than hoping they'll get carried by them.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

OP is talking about how it's ok to get carried sometimes, and that not every game is won by being THE carry.

But you have a just as good point.

Miku Append3 votes

If anything, making yourself actually carry-able shows you're a decent player who can work with their team. The issue I see in ranked with this is it's one big d/ck comparison contest. People think they need to be the one with the biggest d/ck in the game and usually feed.

LU Vanilla Rice 3 votes

I personally can relate to this! I remember one (ranked) game where I was doing alright as Lissandra mid, but our Twitch started to pop off. Instead of building straight damage and trying to survive in fights, I dove in and peeled for our twitch, and even though we were down, we ended up winning!

ƒoes3 votes

IMO I like playing games where I don't carry sometimes. It takes off the stress of fucking up to be honest.

Kitten of Evil2 votes

I actually like not having to carry sometimes (although I main supports and lately a lot of Kled). It means when I screw up, we don't instantly lose the teamfight.

Noblewind2 votes

In any somewhat even game, you're going to have 2 or so carries on a team with the rest being roleplayers. If you're struggling to catch up from a bad early game, it makes no sense to carry the game anyways. You won't do it most of the time no matter how hard you try to outplay.

Strategizing around who got ahead on your team leads to wins.

Aeszarck2 votes

Lol, I remember sticking around in post-game chat and thanking the enemy team for the game, and I get the reply, "kys, you got carried by lee" I reply, "I know I did, but that doesn't mean I have to kill myself." "stfu kys you're trash getting carried" He leaves the lobby.

Apparently getting carried is a crime deserving of suicide.

Elikain4 votes

Here's how i see his dumb argument: "If only if your carry Lee was as useles as me, my team would have won that game!".

That person was angry that he didn't clearly do something to add to the carry potential of his team so he blames someone from the enemy team for carrying harder than him? I'm never going to understand this attitude LOL

Yep! I think the person (Morgana) was even more angry because he did well early on in bot lane but wasn't able to convert it into a win. Also, he got camped super hard. Look at bot lane's death counts xD http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2357759421/227894082?tab=overview

I didn't really understand why he was asking me to kill myself though. Like, if I said "ggez" then I guess his reaction would be more understandable, but I literally said "Thanks for the game!" (or "Thank you for the game." Something along those lines, I don't remember exactly.) and then he tells me to kill myself. Did he think I was being haughty and sarcastic or something?

Elikain1 votes

I personally don't talk to the enemy team at all. I keep my all chat muted. Because in my experience, being on the losing team and being frustrated that my team just isn't really trying the best they can to win and then seeing that "gg" or "thanks for the game" kind of sounds like a dick move. Like putting salt on the wound.

This doesn't really justify his response but i hope that you see your response may have been interpreted as a payback for the loss, even if the message wasn't intended to be sarcastic. I never believe that "gg" is ever said with a good intent in mind because people mindlessly spam it after each game, losing it's meaning. So it feels forced and like a default response to any situation, adding to chat interaction that personally isn't needed at the few last seconds of the game.

I guess I understand. It's frustrating though because I want to be polite. I'll thank the players for the game when I lose too, but he obviously didn't know that. Can you think of a better way to phrase it?

Elikain1 votes

I don't think i can help you phrase it better than it already is. The interpretation of the message is always left to the receiving party and their current state of mind plays a big part in that regard. If they are distraught or frustrated, there's nothing you can do to make it feel better if they inherently don't believe the match was satisfying to play, regardless of the outcome. You don't need to strive to be polite in League. It isn't frowned upon but it isn't expected either. And the fact that people aren't used to it, leaves your politeness open to interpretation. You'll see a more neutral response in higher ELOs than in lower ones.

The difference between the mentalities lies in ELO. Higher ranked players will tend to not take the loss to heart and as a personal insult while lower ranked players would do the opposite. And i guess the majority of the community shares these traits in specific combinations because i don't believe you'd play ranked if you didn't really care about the games you're playing. Frustration is guaranteed in a competitive environment but whether you let this affect the games you're playing or not lies in the ability to recognize tilt and take a break - peel away from your ego that is telling you to continue until you win or get your payback for whatever.

I'm just a D4 player so in terms of ELO, i consider myself above average but in no means do i have the mentality of a high ELO player yet. I carried over the mid ELO mentality and satisfying matches for me (regardless of the outcome) in the last 3 seasons is little over than 10 - out of at least 600+ total games. Those matches were where i genuinely thought my team tried to win 100% and i never felt bad about the outcome of those matches. Every other match was either a win (wins are satisfying) or a loss (bad match quality).

Aeszarck1 votes

Well, if I'm not supposed to be polite because people aren't used to it, how are they going to become used to it?

This was a low Silver/high Bronze normals game. I would have thought that a friendly comment at the end of the game would have helped the situation, not worsened it.

Elikain1 votes

No one's ever going to get used to it. They'll just have to climb the ELO ladder to understand that. Because low ELO players don't like to take anything from others, everyone wants to be the lone wolf and do it themselves. Even if you told them you'd give each a 1000 dollars at the end of the game, rest assured the guy who got angry would have had a similar response.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

If people truly understood that then half of support complaints would be gone.

I mean, you still have to do your own work to get carried, but I guess people are under the assumption that they don't. Then they wonder why can't they climb "because of my teammates".
