Malzahar's Passive makes him too strong in lane.

As title. Malzahar's Passive gives him 90% damage reduction and crowd control immunity until 1 second after he's been engaged on.

This, combined with his safety in farming (voidlings + malefic visions), means that a good Malzahar wins every trade.

At level 6, Malzahar gets 2.5s of disable alongside %HP damage. If you start a fight and Malzahar's Passive is up (which it should almost certainly be if Malzahar's not dumb), he will get to disable you and there is nothing you can do about it, since you cannot get the initiative thanks to his passive.

Malzahar sics his Voidlings on you and ults you, and any further engagement happens with a significant health difference between you and Malzahar.

Any trade pre-6 follows the same pattern where Malzahar comes in close to spawn a Voidling and hit you with Malefic Visions prior to retreating: you are almost certainly not winning the trade since he has 1s of immense damage reduction and crowd control immunity.

It almost certainly costs any given player more resources to break Malzahar's shield than it costs Malzahar to uphold the shield, and results in a catch-22: either you spend resources and break his shield but deal virtually no damage, or you don't spend resources and Malzahar can trade with you at his leisure. In the former case, you're already down a CD, so Malzahar has more CDs than you do and is at an advantage.

Malzahar's Passive is certainly too strong and gives him too much of an edge over a great deal of laners due to immense safety built into his kit.

(To say nothing of Malzahar hard-countering any hard-engage champion simply by existing.)

Generally speaking, at least with my limited game experience with him now, I laned against a Vel'koz and Vel kept his distance and could fire spells at a farther range than Malz can. Yes the passive protected me from his initiations, but at the same time he would back off so he kept procing the shield and i wasn't getting hits on him :P

Just playing smart can allow you to "win" trading :) even if its just to proc his shield

You can use autoattacks to proc Malzahar's shield, as risky as that may seem, regardless, it takes a long while for him to get his shield back up, and it requires a significant amount of time without taking any damage at all. Keep hitting him with spells and it should provide an opening for you to abuse. Provided that you're not playing low-range mages which he naturally counters with his kit. Also, he relies on his shield more than Yasuo does, and will probably not want to trade with you if it's not up.

Also, remember that his Voidlings only spawn if the first one survives, try to destroy it before it can multiply and you'll leave him without almost 60% of his damage. Whenever I play the new Malzahar I find it very annoying when my Voidlings are killed in that manner, because without them, Malzahar is significantly weaker for a pretty long time, given their cooldown.

Without his Voidlings and Shield, you should be able to take him if you're both about even. His damage is largely sustained now, so short trades are in your favor if you play bursty champs. If you play long-ranged champs, then you're gonna have it pretty easy in all fairness. Also, he naturally pushes the lane, with every spell he has in his kit, so he's prone to ganks if you destroy his shield beforehand.
