Malphite vs Alistar. Which is the better choice for support tank?

Lyless··1 votes·3,720 views

Because as much as I love Soraka, there are times where I need a tank support.

Uh, Alistar.

You can't beat, 70% DR without needing to scale tank items.

Malphite is not good support.

Alistar/Naut way better.

Crimson Mutt2 votes

if you want to play a hipster tank support, go Naut or Maokai. Otherwise, pick Alistar.

Malphite support is trash.

Malphite support is kind of troll. Your main draw is an AS slow that you'll never get close enough to land. Alistar has a malphite ult at level 2, as well as amazing innate tank scaling.

and what are u gonna do with Malph support? Malph is mana hungry, provides no utility pre 6, no trading power, he wont have any items later to be useful. All u have is that ultimate, and Leona, Braum , Alistar provide much more utility and CC

probably the funniest and stupid question i have seen on boards... Malphite isnt even a support.

soo lets compare:

Malphite: low CD small range AS and MS slow

long CD knockup, unstopable

Alistar:

low cd heal

low cd knockup

low cd stun

medium long cd CC cleanse

uhh i think its obvious who is a support in general

Given I don't use tanks, I wouldn't know. So, if you aren't going to just give your opinion, then don't comment. Everyone else, did not do what you did.

Malphite is just an easier Alistar with some targeted poke and much, much longer cooldowns. He isn't even that much easier anymore now that you can buffer Alistar's combo. There may be some situations where you want Malphite over Alistar, but those situations are few and far between.

maxaroni1181 votes

can u give an example of any situation like that? cuz i cant think of any where malphite is better than alistar as a support

MrBuffington1 votes

mayyybeee if you also need a little poke? Or you need slightly longer range engage/don't have a good target (since Alistar W is targeted and Malphite ult is a skillshot)? Or you need a built in AS slow?

maxaroni1181 votes

well as i see it, most of the time that alistar is played, is when the adc already has a bit of poke

say a Caitlyn, Kalista, Ezreal, Lucian, or even a Kog' Maw

so unless u r really desperate for just a bit of no damage poke but some slow and as slow then sure go ahead and play malphite

MrBuffington1 votes

....which is why I said the situations are few and far between.

maxaroni1181 votes

lol ok i still dont know why malphite was even considered here for support... i have seen him once out of my 12k games i have played on various accounts

not in low elo, not in high elo... ever

it should be pretty obvious that malphite is not a support and alistar is wayy better

however, i think that there are 2 other tank supports i really like

Shen/Trundle

Shen:

low cd hard taunt cc

low cd aa blocker (which counters alot of adc's)

low cd slow from escapes (if they run, they are slowed)

and decent damage

Trundle:

decent cd knockup/slow

low (enough) cd aa damage reducer on enemy to counter adc's

and low cd armor/ad/mr shred single target

Thresh is also a good one tho i dont rlly go too tanky on him...

honestly its your choice if u want to play malphite or not but Shen/Trundle/Thresh are just rlly good atm and also Alistar is decent

MrBuffington1 votes

I've played Malphite support maybe once; never played him since. I personally stick to more traditional tank supports (Leona, Braum, Alistar), I just commented in this thread with an open mind to why you might play Malphite support, since I've seen him more times than you apparently have.

maxaroni1181 votes

i still dont understand tho...

even friggin poppy, elise, trundle, and jayce are better supports

and all those champs arent even supports

MrBuffington1 votes

Poppy and Trundle are actually good supports (you even listed Trundle as one of your favorite tank supports, so I don't know why you're suddenly using him as an example of a bad support).

Elise and Jayce are terrible supports. Elise has her cocoon and some poke, but she falls off hard without gold. Jayce is even worse in that respect.

Malphite is an easier, worse version of Alistar. Alistar is one of the best supports in the game. What Malphite brings is very reliable hard engage, basically the same as Annie's Flash+Tibbers. It doesn't matter if he gets blown up immediately after since he's already done his job. If you can't see that, then I can't help you

maxaroni1181 votes

ur just not seeing what i see in elise and jayce support. jayce can do relatively tanky and has nice engages and cc as well as range for the poke and stuffs i forget

elise however has tons of poke, a dash, a stun, free wards and brush face checker that cost like 40 mana and is up for forever and can be rlly tanky and annoying to deal with.

i forgot to mention annie and brand here too but im only talking about off support champs

i am just talking about supports that arent normally supports not bad supports hence the trundle and poppy

i will say that malphite has a slow and a knock up but the slow is useless in lane phase since it does next to no damage and the fucking knock up has a long ass cooldonw

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Alistar. He is significantly more useful when deprived of gold and experience, his CC is more flexible and he isn't dependent on level 6 to get his gap-closer or hard CC.

Nautilus, good talk.

Nautilus, good talk.

It's just something about the way he plays, I don't know. Not a fan.

Quepha1 votes

Alistar has better cc pre-6, both for offensive and for peel, sustain for him and his ally, and is tankier when at a gold deficit.

1st Movement1 votes

malphite scales better with items ,

alistar provides peel and sustain and ult = mal with items

Guyy Fieri1 votes

Definitely Alistar. Especially with his combo now being buffered, it makes it easier on new Alistar players to get the hang of his mechanics. In my opinion, Alistar does it all. He has decent sustain off of his heal (which while being very minimal mid-late game is actually quite nice in lane), he can engage with his headbutt-pulverize combo or a flash-pulverize, he can disengage by using headbutt defensively. Granted, you get a little more damage out of Malphite but his main pull as a support is his ult, which Alistar effectively can do on a much lower cooldown.

im so pony1 votes

If you are mechanically decent alistar is better due to having lower cooldowns thus better peels.

If you are pretty poor mechanic wise then malphite is quite obviously the superior choice.

Lugg1 votes

Alistar has better sustain, that gives him the edge.

Personally I think Nautilus still beats them both.

3TWarrior1 votes

malphite...once level 6 hits, if malphite is anywhere near you...run...run far away

Best Valor NA1 votes

Malphite gets his ult at level 6, but alistar can pull off the same thing at level 2, on a much shorter cooldown. Riot even made it easier to land the combo too.

They are both good. I will list pro's and cons.

Alistar

Pros: -One of the best peelers -Small heal (Smaller by tomorrow) -One of the best ultimates in the game for turret dives -Strong engage potential

Cons: -Melee only -Long cooldowns -Larger learning curve -Weak skirmishing power -Heavily team reliant (Not good in lower elo's)

Malphite

Pros: -Poke with Q that can't be blocked by bodies or minions -Small skirmishing power -Regenerating shield for great sustain in the laning phase (Helps with Q Pokes) -Attack speed slows (Strrrrooooooonnnnggg vs those auto attack reliant champions) -Ultimate -Does very well in AD heavy metas due to armor ratios (More damage than most tank supports) -Can roam and gank better than Alistar in solo queue

Cons: -HORRIBLE peel -No sustain abilities for your ADC -Can't tower dive as well as Alistar -Mana issues if you decide to get trigger happy with the poke

Summary:

If you do not trust your ADC to be the primary carry and you love the ability to poke, Malphite.

If you do trust your ADC and won't need any skirmishing power to try to snowball the other lanes, Alistar.

I believe Alistar to be the overall better support. Peel for your ADC is extremely important right now. However, most of the time I find myself in games where protecting the ADC is not worth it. By most of the time, I mean about 90% of the time. It is why I moved away from the support role for the time being considering how bad the support role is overall right now.

Final thought:

Outside of those two supports there are better options.

-Nautilus -Blitzcrank -Brand

While Brand isn't a tanky option, he can still have a lot of health and EXTREME carry potential. In my opinion, Brand is THE best low elo support. Especially if you sacrifice sightstone for more damage + health items. People in lower elo rarely know how to take advantage of the wards you have placed anyway so you might as well skip the sightstone and just place pinks on the important objectives.
