What is your most hated match-up?

Sp33d Zer0··4 votes·1,717 views

I am curious what the most hated Match-up for everyone is. Specifically, what is the one you hate the most for your main role and why? (For junglers, it's your counterpart, for bot laners, your specific counterpart)

Ex: I am an adc main, and whether I play Ashe, twitch, or ziggs, I can't stand laning against Draven. His Auto trading combined with his cc is just obnoxious to deal with and feels impossible to deal with as it bursts hard and sustains well simultaneously. It feels like against even bad Dravens you might as well just forfeit laning phase and hope your teams diver/burst caster gets fed off their rocker.

My duo is a jungle main who can't stand Lee sin simply because he is always picked.

When playing Shen...

Olaf The bane of my laning phase. Trundle Bane of my existence. Fiora Oh joy, she passively zones me. Illaoi I didn't want to lane anyway. Swain God help me if this motherf*cker goes top. Heimerdinger Please make it stop. Rumble Nothing you buy as a starting item makes this any less painful. Teemo Please go back to whence you came, demon. Darius If he takes ghost and stormraider's, I know I am always in the perfect position to get dunked. Jayce Heavy poke AND out-duels me? Sign me up.

Sorry, I couldn't pick just one.

Aatrox ? ever laned as shen vs Aatrox?

Melledoneus1 votes

It's an easy lane because Aatrox's only CC is telegraphed and his sustain is auto based, so you can win trades handily if you play your cards right. You can also mess him up hard if he maxes E for poke.

Where is Riven?

Melledoneus1 votes

Riven is one of his only good lanes.

Gregor Gysi1 votes

Well I really doubt that, Shen is pretty easy as long as you pay attention to minion aggro.

Melledoneus1 votes

The reason why Shen counters Riven is because she relies on getting a lead and snowballing, particularly by being aggressive in lane. Shen can punish her hard in lane by interrupting her combo and laying the smackdown. He also gets pretty tank with Sunfire, and she has trouble unless she somehow gets a kill off him. He also excels at turning tower dives into opportunities, meaning that Riven will have major trouble getting gold if Shen decides to freeze the wave.

If you beat a Shen as Riven then the skill difference was hugely in your favor.

Gregor Gysi1 votes

Shen's W has a pretty high CD early so Riven can bait it out and beat him once her Q is up again. He also can't really retaliate against short trades unless he tries to taunt which is pretty risky and high CD - and draws minion aggro. If he manages to freeze the wave in front of his tower with Riven's wards being down and his jungler not being spotted then he outplayed her pretty hard. Generally, if Shen freezes the wave then he has the farm advantage, if Riven freezes the wave she has genuine kill pressure. Also, he has no fight ultimate so 6 is a huge opportunity for Riven to snowball.

I don't think so, won against a plat 2 Shen main (with 60% wr/~5kda) and won pretty handily. That's the only significant matchup vs Shen that I had recently, but generally I worry very little when I am up against him.

Shen should only use it once Riven commits to a trade with her Q-autos. If he uses it otherwise he done f*cked up.

He also can't really retaliate against short trades unless he tries to taunt which is pretty risky and high CD - and draws minion aggro.

The best trades for him are short trades. If Riven Q's at him she either has to use her third Q to back away and take the trade (which if Shen used his Q like he should, would not have been much in her favor) or risk Shen using his E to interrupt it and annhilate her.

On the contrary, Shen's ult is perfect because Riven is not a good split pusher. He goes off to another lane and snowballs someone else, and she's there without anyone to kill. If she roams before Shen, he can simply push the lane and wait for her appearance to cockblock her.

Also, freezing the wave isn't something Shen has to do. He can easily outsustain her with a cloth-5 start and play passive farm lane. If she makes any moves he can punish her really. REALLY hard. I'm not saying Riven can't win this one, but Shen has the inherent advantage in an evenly skilled matchup.

Sounds like this 'Shen main' either went for a lane sustain build or didn't play his cards right. There are different playstyles for Shen, most likely he was playing aggressive/didn't know how to position his Q against a Riven.

Well, Riven is always going to use her Q/W first and keep her E up. So the moment he activates his W she can E out and wait for her Q to come up again - which will be before his W as hers 5 seconds shorter CD on activation of her first Q.

On the contrary, Shen's ult is perfect because Riven is not a good split pusher. He goes off to another lane and snowballs someone else, and she's there without anyone to kill. If she roams before Shen, he can simply push the lane and wait for her appearance to cockblock her.

But she can deny him with the wave just being in the middle as every even trade is advantageous for her due to only her having actual kill pressure with ult.

Yeah cloth 5 means that Riven is just going to farm this out and shake hand TP somewhere before 6. Shen can't trade aggressively due to minion aggro (he will get punished and his wave pushes which is a free freeze for Riven).

Then when both TP back Riven has the advantage as Shen lacks the power of Doran's shield while Riven will probably have a hammer which should be better than whatever Shen got (tabi rush?).

I mean sure, he obviously missplayed but seeing how we are equally good it's telling how he lost by that much.

Again, if she goes aggressive Shen can punish her in more ways than one. First, he can position himself in a way where either she pushed the wave by going aggressive or taking heavy minion aggro. Second, he can walk under her third Q (this is actually really fun to do) and taunt her towards turret, pulling his Q and getting a heavily advantageous trade.

By positioning with minions he can ensure safety because Riven will bring the wave right to his turret for safe farming.

But she can deny him with the wave just being in the middle as every even trade is advantageous for her due to only her having actual kill pressure with ult.

You underestimate how tanky Shen can make himself. Shields are no joke against Riven. And when Shen hits 6 he's most likely looking to ult out anyway, so he'll be playing passive enough to ult safely to an ally. After that Sunfire ruins Riven's day. Bonus points for ninja tabi.

Yeah cloth 5 means that Riven is just going to farm this out and shake hand TP somewhere before 6. Shen can't trade aggressively due to minion aggro (he will get punished and his wave pushes which is a free freeze for Riven).

Shen doesn't NEED to trade aggressively. Also even if he does his W negates minion aggro completely.

Then when both TP back Riven has the advantage as Shen lacks the power of Doran's shield while Riven will probably have a hammer which should be better than whatever Shen got (tabi rush?).

Nobody rushes Tabi on Shen. You either take Bami's Cinder or Chain Vest, depending on whether you took armor or HP runes. It hits Riven pretty hard.

I mean sure, he obviously missplayed but seeing how we are equally good it's telling how he lost by that much.

I will reiterate: a smart Shen does not lose against a Riven without heavy jungler influence. He wins the matchup by pure denial. Also, until Riven gets Black Cleaver she will have trouble killing a Shen with any bonus HP and armor. If Shen gets Titanic Hydra/Sunfire combo before or at the same time she gets cleaver, he wins yet again.

Shen is one scary mofo when played right. However, I won't be the first to admit that he does not win the Riven matchup as hard as he should because of how little Riot cares to actually fix him.

Gregor Gysi1 votes

Ultimately it's hard to discuss whose powerspikes hit harder, although I'd argue that once both have two items Riven should definetely win no matter what although Shen will have more global pressure. IMHO her 1v1 is better than Shen's post 3 until lvl 18 but it seems that you disagree. Theorizing a matchup over text is probably too ambitious..

Dunno if he should win the 1v1 if he already wins the global pressure. All Shen should be good at is not lose..

Agreed, it's heavily dependent on the situation. League is not a 1v1 simulator, so anything goes. But there is a good reason Shen is listed as a counter to Riven.

Dunno if he should win the 1v1 if he already wins the global pressure. All Shen should be good at is not lose..

Shen can win the 1v1 to amplify his global pressure. A more fed Shen= a tankier warden= better ganks. Better ganks end up in more gold and objectives, allowing your team to snowball. Even if Shen somehow loses and feeds Riven a kill or two, he can get his carries fed and just peel for them when Riven tries to go for them for an easy shut down.

Jayce is just a matter of not dying and ulting if he roams, he will shit all over you in lane but if you not feed and get a sunfire its over for him.

Out of all possible cancerous lanes I probably hate Illaoi the most. Olaf will farm you in lane if hes good, but can be kept in check by your jungler. Grab a blade of the ruined king so he cant just ignore you in teamfights and try to save allies with ult and W.

Hate going against Vayne Fiora Janna no matter what role I'm playing in.

Fiora I feel like I have to do way more to outplay her than she does to me, especially after his nerfs. She's a better duelist (imo), while also having a better disengage if things don't go her way. Just not a fun champion to play against. Whenever I see her on the enemy team, I pray that they suck with her.

Vayne Everything about her is just awful to deal with. If she was removed from the game, I would not miss her.

Janna A good one is rare to come across, at least down at the level of play I'm at, but she is a royal pain when played competently. Can't kill anyone on her team, can't escape them. Fun and interactive gameplay for the whole family.

Fiora has no dissengage what.

She's also often going to end up behind you because Vitals.

Just bait her into going in on you and don't burn your Pillar until she tries to dissengage.

Elkington VI1 votes

Her Q let's her dash away and typically she has more tools to win the duel when played competently. Her sustain rivals Trundle's in a duel (but she does a lot more damage) and you can't really fight her when her ult's up, at least not in my experience. In contrast, Subjugate doesn't really do much against her, as she doesn't build tanky enough. Not using Pillar until she has to use her Q is risky, because you'll typically want to use it so she can't end up behind you unless she flashed for it. Honestly, it's easier to just not fight her alone then risk giving her a kill.

I hate laning as Lux vs Ahri, as the match-up is extremely favored towards the latter.

It's not impossible to win the match-up by any means, but Ahri's MASSIVE mobility makes Skillshots I can normally land on anyone, a massive chore. She also denies the ability to E + AA = TLD, as Lux's AA range will more often then not put you in front of minions, making for an easy charm.

The match-up just isn't generally favorable as Ahri's generalism out-classes any of Lux's specialties.

Aatrox into lane bullies Renekton, duelists/skirmishers Fiora, or people with just a better laning phase (almost everyone).

Whenever I go up against anyone that can outduel me or bully me out of lane, my passive becomes practically useless since I can't stay on minions long enough to get it unless they are under tower, and even then my passive wouldn't give me enough damage to fight the enemy (why does it scale off base ad?).

Grokmir1 votes

I don't actually main support, but...

the Thresh vs tahm matchup always make me contemplate suicide.

You literally cannot touch the enemy adc until tahm wastes his w on like poke or something and he is tanky enough/has enough sustain that hooking him doesn't accomplish very much.

Forces a farm lane harder than any other matchup imo.

Thee Pie Man1 votes

Jayce feels really punishing to most primarily melee champions in top lane. I main Malph and enjoy that champion the most, I often ban Jayce or ask for the ban if I think I'm going to be playing top. His poke late game on my ADC's is just as bad. Doesn't help that I can't use two of my abilities on him without ulting right on top of him.

From what I've experienced against Jayce there's no "break" period unless he's not in lane or dead.

Singed

I have no idea how to play against this guy. If I do a trade, get out of his poison, and do another trade, turns out I took the full damage of his poison because I went back into it before it ticked out, too bad for me.

If he ever gets ahead, he's gonna run at you and kill you. He'll zone you from the caster minions under your tower because of his Fling.

Even once you catch him out, he ults and trolls away. If you flank him, he simply Flings you away.

The best I've done against a Singed is farm the melee minions under my tower as best as I can, and get the casters if he decides to proxy. If he does, the jungler always goes after him, and they yell at me when I tell them to stop. If my team is doing good, my jungler usually manages to kill the Singed, so things work out. But whatever I do, it's not gonna do anything. My best game against a decent Singed was a Yi game (not with my main) where I ended up farming enough gold to be able to chase down Singed and kill him for a Penta.
