Does Udyr Need a VGU? [Discussion Post]
Personally I think he is in need of one, however he is not a large offender. He also has the curse of the Spirit Guard Udyr, so he will be at the end of the list for a VGU. Mind you also he is from S1 I believe, so it makes sense he is very outdated.
This is a discussion post so theres no need to downvote other comments just because you disagree. Of course some comments should be downvoted but disagreeing =/= wrong.
His Appearence:
Currently Udyr's model is oudated and ugly. His effects are ok but he looks more like a homeless guy who killed an animal and slung it over his back. He doesn't look like a fighter who channels the spirits of the Freljord. He doesnt fit his theme. His spells are alright but theres not much too them. When you play Vi you can almost feel the force behind each punch. When you play Fiora you feel sleek and slippery. When you play Udyr you don't feel very interesting I'd say. His spells could use an update. His turtle stance looks like it would be on a Project Skin due to the (hexagons?) that make it up.
His Playstyle:
Udyr is like a less messy sion. He can use almost any item in the game. Sure some are better then others. He can use AP, AD, AS, MS, Armor, MR, HP, etc. No stat is truley bad on him really. He's not very focused on what he should build. He's had a history of breaking items and really isn't interesting to play. Diversity in builds is a great thing, however Udyr isn't focused. He's so open to everything where he lacks identity in thematics and build. Sure he is going to be the juggernaut that splitpushes, but is he AP, hybrid, Attack speed based, AD, tank, or glass cannon?
Gameplay:
From what I've seen of Udyr gameplay is that some of his stances are purely dominant over another. Some you barely use and others you only use. I believe just as neither Mini Gnar or Mega Gnar is better then the other, that each of his stances should be equally usable in situations. Im not saying that he should be forced into a certain playstyle or build, but I do think that some of his stances are just much less useful in general.
His kit is a big ball of stats and onhit effects. The only interesting thing about his gameplay his his Pheonix form which is basiclly a shaped sunfire cape. I'm not saying he is boring but he is a ball of stats and onhit effects. Theres nothing to dodge and no special effects. This ties in with his thematics because he's not visually interesting and he doesnt have anything special except stances.
My solution:
Udyr should have some effect before he changes stances or if he changes stances he causes some effect. So example for the Tiger Stance maybe he swipes in front of him, then changes stance. Or for Pheonix Stance he breaths a cone of fire infront of him. While these are just ideas he needs more then just stats and unhit effects. He doesnt feel impactful and he isn't visually or gameplay wise interesting. If giving him an effect on every stance upon activation is too much you could do this:
> Passive: Clashing Spirits: Udyr is the vessel for several spirits. As he channels multiple spirits at once, they clash for control. After changing stances 3 times he will cause a bonus effect to occur based on the stances used.
You could also give him an effect/action upon hitting an enemy with X stance.
When or if Udyr gets a rework, he deserves more then just these stats. He deserves interesting playstyle and a cool look. He should feel impactful with a focused build or playstyle, not the mess he currently is in. Old Sion had the problem of building AP or AD or Tank and he wasn't focused on what he should build. Udyr suffers from a playstyle and gameplay that isn't focused or matches his theme really.
Tell me what you think. Do you think Udyr needs a rework or not, and why? Maybe I'm wrong, so if I am tell me why in the comments.
