does |AOE abilities not remove the spell shield from

I've hit a target with Varus E (hail of arrows) but the shield did not remove.

I also just watched a Nasus use his Spirit Fire and the shield still wasnt removed.

Is it single target abilities exclusive?

Maybe if it was treated like Malzahar's spell shield, it wouldnt be that huge of a problem .
