Nail in the coffin. Thank you Riot. Thank you. Yes he's strong in competitive play. Like other champions buffed for a similar disparity in skill that will not be named. But hey, I'll just spam him until I can play him effectively when I get a lane like LeBlanc, Zed, a good Ahri, a reasonably on point Kat, or a Lux that can hit Q, a Fizz that can effectively troll pole-ult-q-kill, ... you get the idea. Then he'll be nerfed again. So finally,he can only be played on the pro scene.

The problem is that they made his early game extremely efficient. He's a huge lane bully that chunks your health and doesn't have a very large window to retaliate against. A decent Azir will zone and farm super efficiently while starving the opponent for gold and whittling their health down. Even if you manage to avoid his onslaught of soldiers, he won't just stand there and let you hit him as a reward, he'll back off for a couple of seconds and zone you again. Azir having burst, DPS, zoning and general safety really is a problem.

The bottom line is, he's not very fun nor forgiving to play against, and to make him fair without changing aspects of his kit (which I would instead of number nerfs), he needed to be nerfed.
