Runaan's now overshadows Statikk
Runaan's was changed in the marksman update to be more than just an extremely situational item on certain ranged AA champs looking to stack on-hits on other targets.
While it did bring the item out of the darkest cellars where only Twitch and Kayle could find it (one being accustomed to low-light and the other having a light surrounding her that allows her to see), you've created a much more toxic Statikk Shiv issue.
Here's how:
Statikk Shiv will:
- Apply bonus damage to up to 5 targets
- The damage is magic and can crit
- It scales based on level up to 150, so an IE crit can see at most 375 damage from it.
- It has no additional scaling with AD or AP, and so is always face value
- The flat stat boosts it gives are 35% AS, 30% crit, and 5% MS
- The magic damage has no synergy with AD items and so the additional damage will not apply armor pen or increased damage from LDR
- Runs on a recharge system that requires movement and high fire speeds
Runaan's Hurricane will:
- Apply bonus damage to up to 2 more targets besides the primary
- The damage is physical and can crit
- The damage applies all on-hit effects (including lifesteal)
- It scales based on 25% of your total AD, so an IE crit will make it do 62.5% of your AD (with LDR, this jumps to ~72%)
- The flat stat boosts it gives are 40% AS, 30% crit, and 5% MS
- Since this damage is physical, it continues to synergize with armor pen and a general AD build
- The bolts fire continuously and consistently
- Passive only functions on ranged units
So what does this mean then?
Let's start off with what made Runaan's weak before - what Runaan's gave you was an absurd mount of AS with the ability to stack on-hits on multiple enemies. Pretty sweet deal, but it gave no real offensive stats besides just that - attack speed and small "AoE" damage. This meant that the only ones this item really worked well with at all were champs that had on-hits to apply to kick up the rather minuscule damage of the additional bolts. So Twitch, Kayle, and Teemo - and then the occasional Varus that would go for more than just Q-sniping damage.
Well, now Runaan's first of all clocks out as just over the top of Statikk in terms of flat statistics. Normally this could be made up for in the passives - not the case here. Runaan's is inherently better on ADC's over Statikk Shiv as it synergizes far better and gives much more meaningful benefits to ADC's along the lines of sustaining and consistent damage. Statikk Shiv's only use right now would be Graves and Yasuo - and on Graves I'd probably rather go Phantom Dancer as it suits his style far better. As it stands utility-wise and stat-wise, Runaan's has now simply switched places with Statikk Shiv - one being a very much viable choice while the other is such a niche pick in terms of usage that it might as well just be deleted. While a lot of people might still be trying to go Shiv on ADC's for the time being, come the end of pre-season you're likely going to see Shiv fall off the face of the rift - other than on Yasuo, since Yasuo gets nothing major from Runaan's.
Now there would be an arguable case for Statikk Shiv being an early-game stomp item as it has an okay base and a cheap price - but Runaan's is the exact same price as Shiv. For some reason Shiv sells for more, but Runaan's costs the same. There's really no reason not to go Runaan's.
And the worst part is that in the pre-season introduction video, you said "now everybody can be Jinx" - except that Jinx can now be doubly Jinx as well and can stack critically hitting AoE round on top of each other for secondary targets. Your rockets can now not only hit in an AoE, but that AoE can be overlapped to have the two secondary targets of Runaan's passive get hit while being hit by Jinx's primary rockets - you can do over 320% of your AD to two other champs with her that may otherwise be out of range.
And a lot of people may ask, "Well, why couldn't she just stack damage like that before then? Wouldn't that have made her OP?" It's because before Runaan's had no bonus offense in its stats besides just more AS, and no critically striking secondary bolts - you lost more damage than you gained. Now you get all the damage plus extra.
I'm just letting you know now, Riot - you fucked up. While it's nice to see Runaan's be an actual viable option, it was kept on the niche-side for a reason.
