[PBE Support Itemization Notes - 6.22] Redemption, Knight's Vow, Ardent Censer, Crucible, Locket...

...but the support itemization changes look kinda horrendous.

And is not even a matter of power, as supports are receiving very powerful items indeed, probably receiving even more power than what they have now. It is a matter of disrupting support feeling and restricting the space to operate rather than expanding the item choices

Some of the things that are happening with some of these changes:

  • Changing recipe formulas for items that are working for no precise reason (I'm looking at item 3060 which is going to be completely discarded for Zz'rot at this point since it became a worse version once you take out completely the AP/heal)

  • Force some items down the throat ( how someone is going to pass on item 3222 given that now it has both the cleansing ability AND the highest bonus healing and shielding power? Why you would put an higher heal and shield bonus on it than the Ardent Censer which should supposedly be THE healing and shielding item - while Mikael the one to use to do clutch saves throught the cleanse -? )

  • Put too much of a power budget of new items in actives on a role which is yet requested to have a ton of active items because of sightstone and his upgrade forcedly taking a slot, and yet at the same time make some active item easier to use make it at the same time more complex and dumber to manage the actives(insert items like Redemption and New Knight's Vow while making item 3401 more powerful and easier to use?)

  • Create duplicates of the operating system for some items which would cause either problems in being OP if the synergy is too strong or would leav some item even more behind in the dust if one item proves to be far weaker than the other (see the above mentioned ZZ'Rot-Banner situation or New Knigth's Vow with item 3050 )

  • Balance some non support item for supports which would cause general balancing problems and will likely cause nerfs that will take items out of support hands (item 3028 / item 3174 , item 3001 , even mentioning item 3110 that was traditionally used by top laner while supports always opted for item 3025 - which was confined mainly to supports before became common for other roles after some changes it received that made it better for other roles - )

All of this while taking away power from the situation when you are going occasionally solo berserk and straight carrying or splitpush alone without temamates, which sometims you are forced to do when you can't get a team you can properly support in SoloQ (of course for organized teams and competitive you get more power as I said in the premise)

Of course there are very good changes and intriguing items here, so there is great potential for success. BUT a lot of tweaks need to be done because a lot of the potential good things you are putting on the table now could be going to be wasted because of the problems that could end up being created by a lack of perspective when taking a step back and looking at the big picture when you see a bit of confusion in some of the directions taken here

** EDIT: Added TL;DR for clarity **

** TL; DR ** Support itemizatization changes presented in PBE have good ideas into it, but overall look horrendous because of overlying design/perspective issues (not strictly related to items power) and need serious tweaks to fulfill the good potential of those ideas introduced

TLDR

The last paragraph is basically TL; DR

Support itemizatization changes presented in PBE have good ideas into it, but overall look horrendous because of overlying design/perspective issues (not strictly related to items power) and need serious tweaks to fulfill the good potential of those ideas introduced

I love a lot of the new support item effects, but the stats on a great deal many of them make little sense. Mikael's Crucible's heal/shield power no longer synergizes with anything else in the item, due to the removal of the heal, health regen is still largely a dummy stat, and many support items still offer a sprinkling of three of four different stats, most of them in unsatisfying small amounts, and with little direct relation to their core effects. Items whose passives and actives lack self-synergy with their own stats tend to not feel as good as they could be, and support itemization suffers from this issue the most, which is one of the reasons why it still doesn't feel all that fun to pick items as a support. Perhaps this preseason might not be the right time for larger-scope work, but I think support itemization will eventually need an overhaul, so that support items legitimately feel good to buy, including just for their stats.

Well, that's not imho the problem on new item 3222 . The heal was always a minor part of the more important effect that was the cleansing ability. That was the thing that could save an ally from death, not the heal There is not a problem with power on the new item, but the fact is that now they are identifying Mikael as the healing/shielding item when it really wasn't before (while taking the heal out of it on top of that to make it even less intuitive), and making the item 3504 that was the healing/shielding item a poke/damage item?

The ideas are there for a good support itemization upgrade/overhaul in this offseason, but it seems they had not a so clear idea of why people picked up certain items...so they missed on items identity rather than solidify their core thematic with the result that the good ideas are thrown out in a confused way, with some hidden power that was ignored by people on the old items that are now exalted and built the new item identity around - which is the opposite of the itemization update they did for the other classes -

The thing with many small amount of different stat is because they likely wanted to not make support items so powerful that some other role could pick it up, so it is expected, as the avoiding of too much synergy between passives and active most of the times - somethimes they just miss the mark instead like with item 3050 - , so I don't think they are going with "ball of stats" item for supports, and honestly I think it is not a bad choice per se
