@Riot Skarner, the mid season class update is a good opportunity to do some work on him

9 months ago, RiotRepertoir made a followup post on the latest skarner rework. That's because althought the rework got some positive aspects (more depht to his gameplay, mana costs in the jungle got solved, that E, W scales with max% hp), it brought up some negative ones. and these are:

  • skarner got bottlenecked into the jungle, due to alot of his power being enclosed in fixed area, located in the jungle;
  • this makes him awkardly goofy if outside those zones;
  • he's not the "premiere-objective-controller" you wanted him to be. i mean, skarner becomes clearly stronger inside of the spires, but still lot's of junglers can take objectives without the same team effort needed to control skarner's spires;
  • team effort: skarner spires have become so important to make skarner function, that often becomes a team effort to control them. i mean, we clearly don't need any more objectives other than dragon, herald, baron, turrets, and base structures;
  • when behind, skarner falls off pretty hard, as he can't have a proper access to his spire buffs: tell me how pleasant it is to kill superminions without the crystal buffs, for example.
  • Crystal slash (Q) is now just bland AoE dps, it's uninteresting unless i buy a sheen item/black cleaver

Yeah, i know Skarner is in the vgu list, but he's a low priority, and personally i don't want to have him like this for the years to come. Now that vanguards are going to be worked on, i see an opportunity to look again at skarner. after all, Riot devs rather skarner to be a vanguard, than a diver, since he failed at being a juggernaut. i'm asking for no bigger change than this:

Reduce skarner harmful dependence from his crystals.

with all the given respect to repertoirs work, these crystal were a poorly executed fix to some skarner's problems. They brought more problems than fixes, especially as of how LoL is going.

please Riot consider breaking your silence on Skarner, even a "we're not planning anything for him" would be fine. thanks

What they should do is make the crystals manually placed where he wants them, and let them serve as beacons. For example: Skarner could put a crystal right in the enemy jungle and it'll signal him every step they take while in it. This would make him the control jungler he's meant to be cause then he can control objectives like buffs, drag, or baron by setting spires up around them and monitor what is happening in his zones.

Because the power from his spires was put into map awareness and control, they can get him more power into his Q and other spells to make him a more impactful champion.

I kinda wish they skip skarner for this mid season and just give him the VGU after evelynn and urgot.

i don't even want him to be an objective controller, it just doesn't fit him, there are many champions who are better suited for that. no skarner player wanted him to be an objective controller, ever.

in the lore he's a protector, as he's the only one awake among his kind, who got into a jurney to try to save his kind by getting back their crystals.

but i (and the majority of skarner players) envision him as a sticky predator, who uses his millenary wisdom to chase down his enemies, to maul them with his claws and his stinger.

So, as i can accept to a certain degree that he will be a vanguard, i strongly want him to be a diver. chase, stickiness, dps, and his ult were his selling points.

remember that akali got some gameplay changes during the assassin update, despite her being in the list for a full vgu. i'm hoping in a certain scenario for skarner to happen.

I think he will be tweaked towards a vanguard like in this update.
