Why change Dorans Shield from a good Tank item vs Ranged, to the opposite?

Before it took some damage off each auto and ability and gave some hp/5 to be able to cautiously farm a bit.

Now it does the opposite. It gives a one time, slow ticking regen off damage. Which actually rewards (rapid) auto attacks and high mobility dualers. The tank only gets that full 20hp per hit if they back off after every such hit for a long period of time. Good luck cs'ing.

Which brings me to Ranged Toplaners and Rivens and such taking it now. Because it nigh completely negates any trading Tanks not called Sej do now. It even helps with last hitting.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if soon you find Adc starting the item.

I'm sure it can be put more eloquently, but I believe the point stands.

If you're just last hitting, you shouldnt be taking many autos.

New dorans is better. You also get another pot.

20 health back from a auto, compared to blocking 8, means you need to get hit nearly 3 over a second times for it to not be better.

If you play smart, its better lol

It´s 20 health over 10 seconds. And yes, admittedly. The higher elo you go the less of a problem this probably is. But seeing the vast majority of players is gold or below, a lot can happen in those 10 seconds. Including being zoned off minions because you can´t afford to step in range of another auto or ability before you finished healing up from the last one.

Thats true, but honestly if thats the case, maybe cloth armor 4 pots might be better.

Old dorans was in an odd spot where you might just think, why not just get a cloth armor 4 bots rather than dorans and 1 pot.

Theres going to be some situations like against ranged AP top lane, old dorans would have been better.

Idk just depends on the matchup and such, you brought up a good point though.

You are correct I would use this item on Kennen Kennen item 1054

Heck I used the old doran's shield if I was in a lane where all I had to do was survive Pantheon

Some ADCs will be using it. Ranged supports may be using it. Giving it on hit damage isn't gonna work out (waste of power/misplaced power)

DShield and ring are too strong (both costing 400g now) and DBlade is kept average at 450g because they are afraid of giving ranged in lane more power. But by doing so they don't correct the problem that ranged characters are better in lane. In fact systematically they are perpetuating it and just kicking that can down the road.

And yeah DRings are too strong too. Look at top lane MSI everything top lane is either manaless or building 3 DRings invalidating their mana requirements that are supposed to gate them while getting damage and semi tanky

its a starting item that dont build into anything else... you get it for safety for the 1st few levels of a game if in bad match up but it ends up putting you in the hole of 400 gold cuz you still have to recoup that gold to get to your actual finished items. so typically if you can start with a component item that will build into a completed item you are better off. such as cloth armor into whatever item for defense or long sword into what ever ad item and so on. but by starting doran shield, or ring or blade you are putting your self in a hole in terms of gold and gold efficiency for the benefit of some early game stats that you dont keep once you sale the item and sale it at a lost cuz you wont get the amount you spent on it.
