Why did Pike have to be a support? All the hook champs are supports already

I really like champions with hooks, but I feel that they are kinda forced in the support role at this point. Hooks in the support role are enjoyable and all but basically having only one role get champs with such a nice engage tool delegated to one role is a bit uninteresting. Hooks make a lot of sense in the support role since you can isolate a target, CC them and make them easy for the adc to kill. A champion with a hook in another role like mid or top could use it as self engage but I think a jungler with a hook would make a lot of sense, but it is a shame we have no hook champion at the moment who can clear the jungle and gank well. Pike would make a lot of sense to be this champion, BUT Riot does want a unique take on support with him and have already worked really hard on designing his kit around support. What they could maybe do is make one of the other hook supports be able to jungle with buffs/changes. Let's look at their abilities to see who between Blitzcrank Thresh Nautilus would make the most sense for this. Hypothetically of course.

  1. Passive: Blitzcrank Mana Barrier: When Blitzcrank receives damage which brings him below 20% maximum health, he shields himself for 50% of his current Mana for up to 10 seconds. -This would be nice for when blitzcrank gets invaded but would be pretty devastating for him to have it pop on a normal clear when he doesn't need the protection. Thresh Damnation: thresh can pick up souls that drop from dead units like minions, monsters and champions. Each soul give him .75 ability power and helps his other abilities as well. Large monsters, champions and siege minions always drop souls. -Very nice that thresh can stack his passive with jungle monsters. especially since large monsters always drop souls, but this passive forces him to have very low base armor and no regular armor scaling. Riot would have to do something pretty drastic to let him clear the jungle at early levels since 16 armor is abysmal especially for jungle clears. Nautilus Staggering Blow: Nautilus gains bonus damage on his auto attack and roots his target for a duration based on level. It has an internal cooldown for the same target however. -This would be nice for some bonus damage on camps and he could use the root to kite them. The root and bonus damage would also be great for ganking.

  2. Q All of these champions have their hook on their Q ability. To save text, I'll focus on the differences between them. As well as pros and cons. Blitzcrank 's hook can travel through terrain and it brings what he hooks in front of him. -Very nice, can be used for buff stealing as well as unexpected ganks from over walls. May not be an enjoyable champion to play against when he is strong since he will be able to pretty safely steal camps and gank lanes. Thresh 's hook has a wind up and stuns the target while bringing them a little closer to thresh. He can reactivate it to travels to his target. Thresh's hook can also go through terrain. -Being able to choose if you want to go in after landing your hook would be great in situations where you do not want to commit to a fight or hook the wrong champion like Amumu whom you would not always want to bring into your team/initiate on. Nautilus 's hook brings him and his target towards each other; with both traveling the same distance and meeting at the middle. His hook cannot pass through terrain but if he lands it on terrain it will cause him to travel fully to that terrain and it refunds half of the cooldown. -Very nice since it allows Naut to move around the map a little quicker as well as use terrain in lane to close the gap between him and a gank target that he may not always have a sure fire hook on so he can at least apply his passive+other abilities.

  3. W Blitzcrank Attack speed steroid that gives him a high burst of decaying Movement speed. Afterwords he is slowed by 30% for 1.5 seconds. -Attack speed buffs are always great for clearing. The movement speed buff can be great for ganking lanes. A bit punishing if he uses this when counter ganked though. Thresh Throws a lantern in an area shielding himself and an up to 1 ally. Allies can click on the lantern to travel to him. -Nice, he can use this to save teammates in sticky situations when he is nearby or that can't quickly follow up to his hook gank. Nautilus He gains a shield for 10 seconds. It gives him an auto attack reset as well as causes his auto attacks to do a dot on all targets near the one he auto attacks. -This is a strange ability for a support to have. It seems great for jungling, the shield lasts about as long as an early camp should, the dot + autoattack reset are also great for clearing.

  4. E Blitzcrank An auto attack reset that doubles the damage of blitz's next auto attack. It also knocks people up. -very good for ganking after landing a hook. Not bad for clearing but at this point blitz has no aoe on his abilities for clearing camps early game. Thresh Thresh gets magic damage on hit with this ability. He can also activate it for more aoe damage that can knock up his enemies and bring them close or farther away based on direction. -Good for ganking after landing a hook or setting up for one. It is nice that it gives damage on hit as well as aoe for camp clearing. The displacement can help him kite as well Nautilus creates 3 waves of explosions around him that damage enemies and applying a decaying slow. Enemies can be hit with multiple explosions but take half damage from subsequent waves. -Very nice tool for clearing and ganking.

At this point there will be no section discussing ultimates. Mostly because it should be clear which one of these champs is the best fit for the jungle. Nautilus Is a by far the champion riot would have to do the least work on in order for him to be able to jungle as well as support. Kind of strange though. It is almost as if his kit was made with jungle in mind rather than support. Why would a support need a dot attached to a long lasting shield or such a good wave clear on an aoe damage ability like his E?

Wait, That is because he was a jungler, but Riot for some reason has only balanced him as a support champion rather than a jungler after he became too strong as a support/top laner. This is frustrating even Ekko got jungle specific buffs earlier this year but Nautilus has still not gotten anything to help him in the jungle. All the buffs he has gotten only serve to make his support stronger. It is frustrating as an old Nautilus Jungle main to see my favorite and once most played champion (still have highest mastery for him despite barely touching him for almost 2 years) be shoehorned into support for so long. I know I am complaining and this is essentially a shitpost at this point because I doubt it will change anything. People probably love playing Nautilus support since he keeps being changed to stay one. It would be just as unfair for Riot to take Naut out of the support role for those people as they took him out of the jungle for me and the handful of older Nautilus mains. I am ranting at this point, but I would like Naut to get a little something to help him jungle a little. Something to make him a good enough to play in the jungle without almost autolosing my team the game because I picked a jungler that can't kill my second buff before the enemy jungler has already cleared his buffs and ganked twice.

tl;dr Nautilus is a support champion with the kit of a jungler. I want Riot to at least give him something so he can at least clear competently. With the addition of Pike we will have 4 hook champions, all of which are support. Pike should stay as support but I want Naut to maybe be able to at least jungle as a secondary option.

Naut was a jungle/top champ until they nerfed him. Now he's stuck in support.

Darius isn't a support and he has a hook when he pulls doesn't he? Lol

Why are hook champs almost exclusively in support? Because that's what they're made to do: hooking an enemy is literally fishing for a victim. If a hook champion is the fisherman, the marksman/markswoman is the vendor just down the road from the pier.

And remember that Pyke is being marketed as a support/assassin hybrid. His kit is made so he fits a more supportive role early on (while he has lower damage) and still be capable of fishing for his OWN meals later.

Honestly I think it's rather thematically fitting that the other "hookers" are supports, even if they are hybrids of another class:

-Nautilus is the soul of a man stuck inside a heavy-ass dive suit, so what's he gonna do besides throw his anchor and make waves? -Thresh is the Warden, not the Executioner. He chains up his victims, Flays them into submission, and imprisons them while the rest of his crew has their way. -Blitzcrank kinda falls the same way as Nautilus, being a heavy steam golem that knocks people around (more specifically up but then it'd be a sex joke) and pulls them to himself by means of rocket-fist-attached-to-a-rope (he's a giant hunk of metal, not much is gonna be heavier than him so why not?).

As far as I can tell the only other real "hook" champions are Darius and the new Swain, but theirs are shorter range and the rest of their kits are made from square one to be able to set up and execute their own kills. In my opinion, it's about time Riot made a champion who blatantly ventures out of the support role mid-game. Though many are upset by recent changes (and I do understand the frustration: they should be looking at the overall player-base, not just the eSports scene, when making balance adjustments), I just play the damn game, and I'm quite impressed by some of the more recent champion designs. I'm pretty excited to see what they have in store after this.

You can play any champion in any role. Franky his kit makes for a much better jungler than support. At least it did before riot ruined the jungle.

Naut is a jungler. He just sucks at what he was supposed to do after nerfs/jungle changes.

Kled ?

Darius?

And Nautilus is primarily a top laner. He's just so fucking weak the only thing he can do is support right now.
