Mid lane: Who to focus in a teamfight

While I have mained mid lane for the past year, playing champions such as veigar, yasuo and vel'koz, I have yet to learn who to focus down in teamfights when I play AP burst Mages. Is it similar to Marksman, where you focus the high priority target within your range, or is it more like assassins, where you attempt to burst the carries then get into a safe position and continue fighting? If someone could tell me, that would more or less help my gameplay, because targeting is the most important thing in teamfights, and I have yet to find the best targeting for AP burst.

Well one was a Jax. Faced an Arhi somewhere in there. Went 10/0 vs a Velkoz as my Gnar put up a friendly challenge to see who could win lane harder. And I think the last one was a Cassiopeia which became a struggle as the match got dragged out to 60 minutes.

It's definitely not marksman. You play a similar role to assassin in that you have high burst. Your goal is to take down their squishiest targets first. That is always the goal of dps because the JOB of the frontline/tanks is to absorb damage and try to make enemies focus on you. Marksman's job is to take down squishies or if they are inaccessible, to shred tanks. They have consistent, steady dps so they are ideal for this job.

You are burst, so you should just focus squishies if at all possible.

Your role also varies depending on your champion; for example, if you are a high utility champion like Orianna, then you need to get off a 3+ man ult for your team.

Adding to that:

As Veigar you can poke with Q or E, but ideally you will want to land a W on as many enemies as possible and then burst down the most valuable target you can get to without dying. If the enemy Darius is fed as fuck and is charging at your team, you have the tools to delete him in less than 1 second and save your team of a lot of trouble.

As Vel'Koz your job is fairly simple: Use your geometry classes to land a Q on the back lines of the enemy team, use your W to poke through the front line, save your E for peeling and ult to wreck the entire enemy team.

As Brand you will want to deal as much AoE as possible. Just mash your face on the keyboard with your mouse vaguely in the direction of the enemy team.

A more general guideline would be:

Poke from a safe distance whenever possible; Burst the highest priority target that you can without getting caught out of position; Don't get caught out of position.
