Mid lane: Who to focus in a teamfight

While I have mained mid lane for the past year, playing champions such as veigar, yasuo and vel'koz, I have yet to learn who to focus down in teamfights when I play AP burst Mages. Is it similar to Marksman, where you focus the high priority target within your range, or is it more like assassins, where you attempt to burst the carries then get into a safe position and continue fighting? If someone could tell me, that would more or less help my gameplay, because targeting is the most important thing in teamfights, and I have yet to find the best targeting for AP burst.

Assassins don't exist anymore they are just a myth.

It's definitely not marksman. You play a similar role to assassin in that you have high burst. Your goal is to take down their squishiest targets first. That is always the goal of dps because the JOB of the frontline/tanks is to absorb damage and try to make enemies focus on you. Marksman's job is to take down squishies or if they are inaccessible, to shred tanks. They have consistent, steady dps so they are ideal for this job.

You are burst, so you should just focus squishies if at all possible.

Your role also varies depending on your champion; for example, if you are a high utility champion like Orianna, then you need to get off a 3+ man ult for your team.
