So, Galio has, in my opinion, always been on the fringe of viability because he can function very well as a coutnerpick to midlaners, and despite his mana costs being incredibly high, give him a blue buff and he's probably fine, or buy a morellos/athenes(which should be his core anyway)

but you know what would INSTANTLY put him in the same tier as several champions who are frequently played even at the professional level?

One simple change.

Make his ultimate uninterrupt-able/make him unable to be disabled for the full duration. Now let's consider the following. The move already puts you in melee range and the biggest issue is getting into melee range in the first place, what with all the cc and slows that exist in the league. You could even tweak the numbers of galio's base stats(ie hp and movespeed) a bit, but this means that he is rewarded for being able to get into that range where he can use that move and thus he and his team can profit. Plus it would make aoe compositions SO much more viable and probably make them top tier.

Now, people like malphite, vi, nocturne, sion...they all have moves where they cannot be disabled. I'm not saying make him undamageable(much like the others still are) but make him the aoe version of these characters. Boom. Instant viability. Now, Galio is already a 'fun' champion but his numbers, especially his mana costs, are keeping him from being/seeing play and with just a small change here, he becomes a contender for one of the best champions in the league! :D

I agree, his mana costs are just crippling without blue buff, and I think another major reason he isn't seeing play is his kit is just so old. Other than his shield (which i think should have the healing effect heal who it's placed on instead of just galio) and his ult, his other abilities and passive seem so basic in modern league.

His numbers are already fairly high.

Not to mention Bulwark is an insanely toxic ability.

the uninterruptible isn't the biggest issue. as if you are good with it you will time it when it is right, most people can't rush QSS anyway. come late game he is hard countered by QSS/mikaels, but a lot of things are. Zed is countered much in the same way.

the real problem from my experience when I tried out Galio after his most recent buffs were his outrageous mana costs. His Q actually does a fair amount of damage, and his E does as well. both are decent wave clear with the Q being GREAT wave clear. The problem is that his mana costs are absurd for a champion who has to get into melee range to farm. you either get bullied vs ranged champions or have to use all your mana super fast. its why I usually had to rush roa on him rather than MR like I wanted to as I couldn't sustain in lane long enough without the mana. I think if they gave him a small auto attack range it would help him immensely as well as lowering the mana cost on either Q or E so he can have a reliable way of farming. he's not that bad actually.

Galio is a strong champ. It's just that people don't know how to lane with him due to the mana gate and him being melee. If you put in the time, he can hard carry games since he has the best waveclear in the game.

No more cast time on E would make him perfectly fine. Feels very clunky to have a cast time on a movement speed ability.

I think, after seeing all the comments, that his w or his passive should include some sort of mana sustain alongside his ludicrous mana costs, or reduce his mana costs and reduce his bulwark heal. But seriously, Galio is actually a really fun champion it's just he plays kinda clunky and aside from his ulti he bring a really specific set of skills to a teamcomp. I just want to see Galio played more, to be honest. He has so much potential and just a few small changes would make him viable in every role except adc.
