New Enchanter Champion

Warning this post is very long, but there will be a Tl;Dr at the end. I encourage you to read however as I put a lot of thought into this topic.

So we just came out of one of the most argued/debated metas

cough item 3504 cough

and although ardent caused a lot of enchanters to gather large circles of hate, I think this is the perfect time for riot to work on a new enchanter champion.

Why Enchanter?

First off many people on the boards complain all the time about certain classes not getting a new champion "We need a new assassin it's been forever" "No new vanguard first"

So what class has gone the longest without a new champion? Enchanter

Here is a list of Champions that have been released since the last enchanter and their role/class

Ornn Ornn - Vanguard Kayn Kayn - Skirmisher Rakan Rakan - Catcher Xayah Xayah - Marksman Camille Camille - Diver Ivern Ivern - Catcher Kled Kled - Diver Taliyah Taliyah - Battlemage AurelionSol Aurelion Sol - Battlemage Jhin Jhin - Marksman Illaoi Illaoi - Juggernaut Kindred Kindred - Marksman TahmKench Tahm Kench - Warden Ekko Ekko - Assassin Bard Bard - Catcher RekSai Rek'Sai - Diver Kalista Kalista - Marksman Azir Azir - Specialist Gnar Gnar - Specialist Braum Braum - Warden Yasuo Yasuo - Skirmisher Jinx Jinx - Marksman Lucian Lucian - Marksman Aatrox Aatrox - Diver Lissandra Lissandra - Burst Zac Zac - Vanguard Quinn Quinn - Specialist Thresh Thresh - Catcher Vi Vi - Diver

Phew that is a lot of champions we have gone without an enchanter. How many you might ask? 29 champions is the answer

30 champions is the answer next week.

Who was the last champion designed as an enchanter? The last champion released that was designed as an enchanter was Nami, who was released on December 7th, 2012.

That is FIVE YEARS we have gone without the enchanter design being used for a champion.

Why is Riot hesitant? I'm not angry at Riot, and I know why they don't like to release enchanters or supports in general.

Enchanters are "boring" they are the champions stereotyped as sitting in lanes pressing either shield or heal on their adc, in teamfights they do no damage and they just focus on peeling for their ADC and don't provide much else is the biggest stereotype of the design.

So why would Riot games want to design a champion who fits the enchanter design when it has such a negative stereotype against the role?

The truth is enchanters may be "girly girls" but they can contribute so much to their team with well thought out plays.

Lulu Can knockup the assassins diving your adc in the backline and polymorph enemy carries a major contribution. Janna Can monsoon the assassins away or knockup with her tornado Nami Can knockup all 5 members of the enemy team with a well timed tidal wave as well as a huge skill shot stun with her bubble Soraka Can outmaneuver the enemy team and run through the allied backlines to heal up those who are low Sona Can crescendo stun a massive amount of people and help win the teamfight.

My point is, Enchanters aren't there just to protect the ADC and people need to stop acting like they require no skill or make no contribution to the team other then a buffed ADC.

Especially now that this item 3504 is mostly gone we can really focus on the major impacts the enchanters of league of legends make for their team again instead of just press shield to give your adc megabuff.

Conclusion I know they may sound boring or they may sound useless, but enchanters are the most fun class out there for a lot of league players and the class design has been forgotten for much too long to be tolerated anymore.

Riot this is your time to respond and give us your thoughts on the class and why it has been left behind.

TL;DR The last Enchanter champion released was Nami in 2012. We have gone 5 years without an enchanter champion. It's time for a new enchanter and time people lose the stereotype of press shield or heal on support is all the skill it takes.

As a 2 million mastery Sona main: Enchanters DO have a severe lack of mechanical difficulty or variance in comparison to the rest of the cast. That's just straight facts. Like, look at your defense for Sona: "She ults people and helps win the team f-" Everyone ults in team fights. That isn't special or new, and as far as her design goes, it's the only noticeable thing about anything she does unless you're someone like me that pretty plays her daily for years. However, people don't want to have that talk, so I hardly bother these days.

That doesn't mean we can't have a new Enchanter FOR FIVE FREAKING YEARS, but if Riot can't figure out how to make them fair in 2017 (soon to be 2018), that's probably the reason why they haven't tried.

They made a good start in my opinion with Janna.

Less focus on the simple abilities (shield) and more focus on the skill of the players (tornado and zephyr)

Some of them are literally littered with simple abilities. Janna has skill shots and trade-offs. Lulu doesn't. Sona doesn't. They could try with Soraka, although I don't see how they could manage it. Maybe changing the functionality of Q in one way or another, or her E, could make her more about using her kit in smart ways and less about standing on top of someone and spamming relentlessly. However, some Enchanters literally have no variance to work with to improve their kits in the first place, so their designs are at a dead end. Something I've been hollering for a long time at this point, but, like I said, no one wants to have that conversation. They'll whine when they're op, but they don't want a real fix more than they just clamor for nerfs. When they aren't op we just forget they exist again and the problem persists while Riot makes more Catchers.

Yeah completely agreed that's why I think it's a perfect time for Riot to work on a new champion with the design of an enchanter.

It has been 5 years and they have a different idea now for how they want to design champions to be more skill oriented instead of simple. Maybe if we finally did get a new enchanter we might see a stronger value and importance on skill within enchanter kits instead of the simple abilities.

Completely agree with you nice thought.

What I want is an Enchanter that brings me back to Season 3 in which they can break the Ward limit. So instead of 3 wards and 1 pink they can place maybe 5/6 wards and 1 pink. I say screw the fog of war I want to see the light.

Taliyahc1 votes

I'd love an enchanter champion who could have an ability that acts as a ward, (like teemo shrooms but not teemo shrooms ;))

Taric Bard Karma could be considered hybrid enchanters.

But more than a new enchanter, I think Riot should first look into the existing enchanters and define their place in league. Do we already have enough enchanter playstyles to begin with? What could a new enchanter bring to the table? Are hybrid enchanters the way to go?

Taliyahc2 votes

Bard is officially classified as a catcher by Riot, as well as Rakan. Yes they may have a shield or a heal their main focus is on catching the enemy with stuns (Bard ult, Rakan ult w)

I think a new enchanter is the way to go first because with a fresh look on the class and a more recent champion we can then look at the directions riot wants enchanters to go.

"So what class has gone the longest without a new champion? Enchanter." to be fair the class "catcher" was made new up and replaced the class "disruptor". they are not he same, disrupterchampions just got split up and catchers got collected as well (blitzcrank for example was before Specialist). You can basicly say that Bard, Ivern and Rakan are hybrid Encahnters. Especialy Bard and Ivern. Bard, who is close to Nami with an engaging Ult and more cc as healing abilitys (and no shields). And Ivern has even less cc, his "catching" ability comes from being a jungler and his q. Lulu, Janna and Zilean should have more reliabel cc. And rakan is a flashy enchanter. Yea he can engage like an alistar but he shields and ehals and comes to you back adn is definetly a squishy champion and not a tank. Basicly he is the enchanter that got this year released. Also Taric and his rework. Taric is on paper warden/enchanter. The paper is made by riot. He has Heal, shield and invulnaribility.

Also is kayn realy a Skirmisher? With his 2 Forms its hard to tell, one being a (shadow-) assassin and the other one kinda Diver while cobined with absicform could be skirmisher...i guess. I had him placed on Specialist.

I am talking about a pure Enchanter.

The class of catcher has been a recent love for riot to make supports in and yes they do have elements of enchanter in them but there are major differences.

Bard and Rakan both go out of their way to catch out the enemy team and deliver their team a kill.

That isn't the point of an enchanter nor is it in their design.

Enchanters are designed to have more importance on healing and shielding neither of which are true for Rakan or Bard.

Häxel1 votes

But true for Ivern and Taric. Taric nearly only shields, heals and makes invulnerable. Only his e is a stun. Sona and Nami do less than that. And you can't raly say Ivern is a strong engaging or flashy champ. Definetly he just got put into catcher cause from his position as a jungler he flanks easier and with flanks, yes ofc you can engage. If Nami or Sona would be Junglers they would be called Catchers by Riot sure too.

Taliyahc1 votes

Once again I think the emphasis on both of those champions isn't on shields and heals like enchanter.

Taric is much more focused on his e stun, and ivern is much more focused on his q for ganks and ult for engages.

Yes they both have heals and shields, but is that the main focus of their kit like enchanter is? Catchers have elements of enchanters, but they are a separate class.

Häxel1 votes

Taric main focuus on 1 of his Abiliyts instead of his Ult, and 2 other basic abilitys? Realy? I pick not Taric if i want a Stun. Neither do i pick Nami if i want just the bubbel for like a Draven. If i want CC i pick Leona, Alistar, Nautilus or even Rakan. Tarics Ult is literaly for leting his Team be alive. His q and wtoo. The w binds with a tartget mostly to keep it alive for bonus armor and that you can use the ehal adn utl on them too (ult beign an area radius). Yea,y ou can se w for e engages. But you use them mostly only if the Jungler ganks. its in this aspect not diffrent from a soraka e, nami q or janna q.

Like i said, a Nami can easy be called a catcher too cause she probably catches or engages better as frontlane Ivern. Ivern just catches from the way how he moves from the jungle. But all riot can do to buff or nerf ivern is by adjusting his shield, sometiems daisy. So you see his shield is his most important tool. You even build Ivern like an enchanter: With Ardent, Athenes, Redemption, locket and Kngights Vow.

I actually made a post about a champion idea that is a male enhancer support...

The thing is that enchanters are super toxic for the game. Besides the fact that they are easy to play, Enchanters are really antifun for BOTH sides of the game. The enchanter just spams shields and heals all game and the enemies just run into a wall of shields/heals they can’t get past without killing the enchanter. Imo Rakan is still a flawed, but much healthier design for supports

Taliyahc1 votes

First off enchanters aren't toxic for the game. The only reason people view them so badly right now is because ADCs are absurdly overpowered and enchanters get in the way of their biggest counter assassins which was also needed during the assassin rework last year. Coupled with the new support items being overpowered supports were blamed for the ADCs problem even though without the items the ADCs still dish out rediculous amounts of damage thanks to low cost items and rediculous crit bursts.

Also I think since it has been 5 years since the last enchanters we are certain to see their new emphasis on skill oriented abilities. Look at Janna for example, the goal of her rework was to lower emphasis on shield and place it on w and q instead

Fedoran1 votes

Laning against soraka has never been and never will be fun

Taliyahc1 votes

As a support main .... gotta agree haha.

Her main problem is too much mana sustain. I've seen soraka use e and q infinitely without running out of mana.

I think they should up her early mana costs as well as reducing early healing, but give that power into late game.

The problem lies just in soraka, not all enchanters

robotmaster1 votes

Doesn’t rakan count as a enchanter with some mix hard cc like Janna and lulu.

Taliyahc1 votes

Riot officially classify him as a catcher which is also what bard is.

What is the difference? Catchers focus on catching out the enemy (Rakan knock up and ult, Bard binding and ult) Over heals, shields, and other buffs

Enchanters focus on peeling the enemy (Nami q, Janna q, lulu hot) And focus on shields, heals, and buffs Instead of catching the enemy in most scenarios.

Slightly similar but different class designs
