Don't Surrender

I'm unranked, so I have no clue what ranked is like. Maybe I'm in for a rude awakening

But people just tend to surrender right at 20 minutes. If you lose a teamfight, why surrender.

The way I usually think about it is

  1. How much of an advantage did they actually get from winning the teamfight (objectives like dragon and baren) If you have good wave clear in your comp, you should be able to stall their pushes after an objective is taken from you while protecting your nexus, therefore accumulating enough gold to finish your builds

  2. Will they be able to actually finish the game while we are on a death timer? If not, then why surrender and give them the free win. Like if you lose a team fight and they have super minions coming into base and only 1 nexus turret is standing and all of us are on 40 second cooldowns??

Then you resign

Otherwise you at least should try to stall out the game to the point where all our builds are finished and we can fight on equal grounds to attempt to get a comeback. I really don't know why people decide to surrender when they can at least try to play prevent defense like C9 did and they ended up winning vs flash wolves.

Disagree?? Comments appreciated

I don't really understand why people surrender in ranked unless its really bad and their in diamond or like high plat. I have lost many ranked games where we started out way ahead and won many ranked games when we start out way behind. A good majority of players suck at closing out games so anything is possible if people keep a positive attitude and keep trying to win.

A lot of people cant climb because they waste time on games and don't go get more experience.

The same happens in chess when players refuse to give up and try again. People who sit around waiting for others to make mistakes will eventually and deserve to be walked on in games of strategy.

Can you elaborate? Are you saying that people who stall out a game waiting for a mistake will end up getting walked on? Or am I off base

I'm saying that those who don't know when to quit or refuse to ever quit are depriving themselves of a type of learning opportunity as well as early-midgame experimentation time. There are those who are stuck in a rank simply because they aren't doing everything they can to get more games in due to the extra influences on matchmaking and such which is partly based on your past N number of wins to losses and such. It is not always worth it to win, especially if you have any aspirations worth mentioning.

The same thing happens when I try to teach someone chess. That "never give up" mentality is often a halfassed substitute for "I don't know what I'm doing so I'll just gamble on hope in a game where there are no dice or random factors"

One game, I asked a guy what he was doing and why. He told me that he wasn't sure so he moved something to set up a trap and hoped I'd make a mistake. So we simply called this a draw and moved on to the next practice match. The reason was because he isn't some immortal with 1000 years to learn chess, he was a college freshman with class in three hours. So I reset the board and had him do this properly. If he wanted to experiment he needed to be able to properly state what manner of experiment he was doing. None of that "lets just try something smart looking" bullshit. That's for people who want to be losers.

There is a benefit to surrendering, a longer term one. But like not surrendering there should be a reason. For me, "I don't want to be here" is an accept able reason though this doesn't dictate how I vote necessarily. All you have to do to prolong a game is give an intelligent reason as to why its worth looking into, only 2 out of 4 have to agree with you. If we are a player down I am not going to stick in there and hope the enemy sucks, you either give me a reason to believe we have a clear and effective advantage or I'm voting to leave. We lost lanes and are struggling in teamfights? I'm not sticking around just because "we can do this" I don't care if you are smurfing, I didn't sign up to hope someone can carry me IF the other team doesn't play intelligently, if you have an actual plan that's a different story though. I'll stay if you actually want to try something that makes sense to try.

Normals are a place to have fun and practice different things to see if they work and to learn new champions. People want to enjoy some success in what they are attempting in that environment and, if they cannot then they just want to wipe the slate clean and start new. Especially when it becomes obvious that the decisions made and experiments performed did not pan out.
