Boards contradicts itself because it doesn't know how to enjoy the game anymore

The general consensus is that season 2 and season 3 were the best seasons, snowballing is too heavy, and that solo carrying is impossible.

The general consensus is also that tanks are invincible (a symptom of season 2), Fizz, Zed, and Yasuo are cancer (2 champions w/ Yasuo in that same archetype that essentially ran the game in S3 by getting one kill and then snowballing the game to a solo carry), and that botlane solo carries the game, which is ironic because solo carrying is supposedly impossible.

I understand that the site isn't a hive mind and that the boards has many different opinions, but if you take even the briefest look these will be the most upvoted posts consistently.

I think the issue is two-fold. One part is an issue that I had when I grew out of RuneScape. You look back at 2005 when everyone was playing and the game seemed really magical. A bunch of strange people in a strange world where you could do everything you wanted. Anyone who played the game will tell you it was fucking great at the time. But once the realization of the game's limits hit you, especially how much you had to grind, it just turned people away. They learned the game and didn't like having to spend hours and hours to get a 99 and/or pay to get memberships and so they got frustrated with the game. This is compounded by the fact that not knowing the nuances of League is a lot more punishing than RuneScape. If you don't know you're being inefficient in that game, you might never find out, and if you do you might not even care. In League, you can get 2 kills on a guy and still be 1 level down on him because you don't know how to manage waves effectively, which gets frustrating.

The second part is the meta-shift. Once core parts of the game that support your playstyle get changed, you feel alienated. That, combined with frustration, are probably the #1 cause of players quitting the game. You see it often in card games because people don't want to keep paying to stay competitive, but if we go back to the RuneScape example this is analogous to EoC, Squeal of Fortune, and Effigies. This is particularly easy to do in a game like League where there are so many nuances if one or multiple become common knowledge people who don't watch streams or browse Reddit end up at a severe deficit in terms of game knowledge.

This is why you often see lower level/ranked players view previous seasons through rose-tinted glasses but high elos will talk about how the game was just as flawed back then too, because they know the various ways the game was abused by the people who knew the game well. I'll even share some of my worst experiences as an example.

Season 3 - Fizz and Zed were everywhere. Both had even more damage than they have now. They get one kill and snowball the lane into solo carry victories. Supports literally bought a pair of boots and then stacks of wards. They were often the target of said midlaners who would get one kill and snowball lanes.

Season 4 - in preseason, bot immediately had to play much more passively because toplaners took TP. Said toplaners were invincible because of defensive masteries. Also, if the enemy team got Annie support you weren't allowed to do anything because she'd instantly blow you up. For the first 3/4ths of the season games stalled out to 45-60 minutes in solo queue and it was impossible to end the game unless Ziggs/Ori was dead. In LCS, 60-80 minute games were common. Riot eventually gutted Athene's and Ziggs and the game immediately shifted to Zed, Yasuo, and Jayce everywhere. I know how much Boards loves their AD mids. /s

Season 5 - juggernaut rework. I feel like enough people here remember GP and Fiora running over games until Garen outplayed everyone by letting them kill him and then his villain mechanic would proc on them. Also 60% winrate Mordekaiser.

Season 6 - League of Dynamic Queue

And despite that, I still have lots of fun because I understand the game and enjoy the game for the game. I can see the flaws and play around them if I don't like them and I have to accept that there are people that will abuse them because everyone wants to have that high elo icon. It's been this way since the dawn of the game. Hell, as far back as I can remember I still know a guy like that who hit Challenger playing AP Soraka mid. I think that this mindset has simply almost entirely diffused to the lowest elos in ranked play.

tl;dr Boards users are not adapting well to newer metas, so they blame many factors other than themselves when they're the ones who aren't becoming as efficient as their peers. Boards is right, the game is a lot more enjoyable when nobody knows the right meta, but you can't expect people to unlearn the game so that you can have fun again. You're not gonna get that feeling again, and boards' obsession on past seasons is flawed in that it focuses on the numerical value of the season rather than the freshness of the game and the players' naivety.

Bot lane doesn't solo carry. If support or ADC sucks, the other suffers.

Say that to half of boards.

Which is why we should nerf them both.

I don't remember specific threads. I just remember a few people said it, and people constantly jerk season 2. So after hearing about damage and towers for the billionth time I decided to finally say something about it.

season 2 had flaws but was the least flawed season stop kid yourself if you think that there were any improvement after season 2

the only improvement there was might be the rework of several no counterplay champions like old poppy

Yeah, that's bullshit. -Jungle ganks a lot more -Crit items are very cheap -Support income has been buffed every damn year

The very role balance has shifted into a much less healthy state. What the hell are we supposed to do about that?

I think its worth noting that upset people are way more likely to complain then happy folks are to compliment. I don't see many if any folks on boards going "I love champion X," "I just saw X do well and I love that kit" Its all " FK CHAMP X" " I GOT DUMPSERED BY THIS OP CHAMP POS WTF RITO NERF ALREADY"
Just human nature I guess, hell most customer service jobs train/teach ya about this at some point.

Then factor in how many freaking people play this game, add in that ever change will generate some negative feelings for some one, and we have a recipe for a huge melting pot of upset players launching complaints 24/7.

There's a lot of stuff in the OP that's either reaching or overgeneralizing, and while I agree somewhat that there is always a baseline level of frustration that comes from players refusing to adapt, that isn't the only reason behind the complaints, nor does it delegitimize the complaints being cited in the thread. While I personally believe Seasons 2 and 3 were, in fact, among the worst in League's history, I do feel there has been a distinct shift in tone since Preseason 6, and that the snowballing we experience today isn't the same as the snowballing experienced in previous seasons.

The flaws in the above criticisms can be easily seen in the OP itself, if one scrolls down just a little: first off, Yasuo is lumped in with problematic champions from previous seasons as if he were also responsible for the troubles of Season 3, if only by association, despite only releasing in the Preseason 4 patch. Furthermore, one of the OP's main points is that players make these complaints because they cannot adapt to new metas, yet the mention of assassins and their counterplay issues in S3 shows that these problems aren't new, and have in fact been part of the game for literal years. Conflating these critics of assassins with players who want to go back to S3 doesn't make sense even if you do assume that only S3 fans make those kinds of complaints, because assassins were just one component of the meta then out of many.

I also think one of the biggest issues with the OP's point is that it is not only unsupported, but even contradicted by the evidence it puts forth: issues like assassin balance, Preseason 4 Annie support, post-Juggernaut Update Mordekaiser and Dynamic Queue were all serious problems regardless of players' ability to adapt, so in fact the complaints that were made every season regarding those were, in fact, justified, and not simply the product of an evolving meta. I agree that there is a certain amount of nostalgic bias going on, but I also think those asking for a revert to prior seasons aren't specifically asking for these particular issues to come back.

It is also worth mentioning that the main criticisms cited in the first line, i.e. that games are too snowbally and don't allow for solo carrying, don't actually correspond in the same way to Seasons 2 and 3. Those seasons did feature excessive snowballing, which Riot tackled in Season 4, but that snowballing occurred over a much longer match duration (the OP completely omits this current major criticism, along with many others), and for the most part could occur from more diverse sources. Even during the Metagolem era in Season 2, arguably one of the most poorly-balanced times ever in League, you could at least have either the jungler or top laner snowball, rather than the current state of bot lane. During the transition in Season 3, mid laners could also do the same. In all of these cases, it was in fact possible to solo carry, assuming you picked the right class and snowballed first. One other critical component the OP omits is that snowballing in Seasons 6 and 7 became pretty much exclusive to bot lane, with junglers being mostly facilitators and the other lanes being otherwise secondary (this is also why many people complain about the state of top lane, namely how isolated it feels). There is therefore somewhat of a double standard in that some players find snowballing more acceptable on some classes and less on others, but that merely underlines the fact that criticism of the current state of the game isn't all that inconsistent with its prior states.

What saddens me most about this thread is that it could have made a really good point. Players do tend to be reactionary and overprotective of their own version of the game, and I think as a community we need to look beyond just what we personally liked and take a better look at the flaws in our favorites that called for change. I also think that we tend to lack self-consciousness, and often go for the easy route or reaction, believing ourselves to be right as a consequence of this, and not as its cause. Unfortunately, this thread makes the same mistake, and instead of making a reasoned point that could have appealed to the empathy of many more players, it instead basks in the much more naïve comfort that the OP is right, and everyone else is wrong. Worse still, it also heavily suggests that the OP's opinions are valid, but that that of other players on the Boards are categorically not (and, contrary to the OP's claims, they do lump these players together as a hivemind). This is a dangerous approach for any discussion space, as it kills any attempt at proper conversation by drawing arbitrary lines in the sand, and making it a battle of Us versus Them (or, in this case, OP versus the Boards), rather than a productive exchange towards a common goal. It is possible to criticize the more hive-mind aspects of this space without dismissing the Boards playerbase entirely, just as it is possible to point out flaws and inconsistencies in an opinion and still respect it enough to give it due consideration. This thread achieves none of this.
