Let's talk about Gankplank - was his rework a failure?

MLDzXnRRR··2 votes·831 views

V5.21: Stats Base health reduced to 580 from 631. Health per level growth increased to 82 from 79.

Mana cost reduced to 40 from 50.
The ability no longer refunds 50% of mana cost (25 mana) on kill.

V5.18: Bonus physical damage to champions reduced to 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 from 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200. Armor penetration reduced to 40% from 50%. V5.17: Delay between casts implemented at 0.25 seconds. Armor penetration reduced to 50% from 60%.

And now there are nerfs on the PBE. So they made his laning worse (squishier and runs out of mana) and he deals less damage. The old GP at least could support, now you have farm dependant character that is easy to shut down and offers not so great damage compared to other fighters/ melee DPS. He has no steroids and there is no reason to build him tanky with low base damages (E nerf). I'm afraid that he will become trash tier again. If you are gonna gut Critplank, buff Tankplank...

No, the rework was good, just awfully timed. You'd expect number tweaks after any rework, but GP is special because there was no test time for the majority of the beginning. Idk why he's still being targeted (Kalista too), I think he's fine, but idk, I have no clue what the reasoning is, and I've only started playing him recently

The issue that Riot trying not to fix, but honestly should, as it provides no real counterplay for Melee opponents, is how GP can Throw a barrel and Explode another mid-toss to make both explode in the Ground-area AOE, giving him an instant chain-combo that Slows, gives him MS and damages while ignoring Armor.

The biggest solution to this would be to put a timer of about .25-.30 Seconds on the thrown barrels, to ensure they hit the ground before GP can Parrley an already-placed, low-fuse barrel and pop them both, as well as reducing the Armor penetration on the Ability. This way, when GP throws a barrel at you, he can't pop it mid-air dealing instant HUGE BURST of damage, debuffing you and buffing himself to catch you and start Critting endlessly.

Or, ya know... we can ditch the barrel ability and just give him something else? His barrels seem to be 90% of the problem. If he can use them he's pretty broken. If he can't he's lackluster unless he's VERY fed.

Which is how hypercarries work right?

The Whamboozler1 votes

Um... no. That's how LIGHT SWITCHES work. Either on or off. Hyper carries work by powering through a lackluster early game to be powerful lategame due to how well they scale with items. Having ONE ability that makes or breaks you isn't very good design and by now so much of GP's power has been shoved into his barrels that's he's half a champ without them. He wasn't really considered a powerhouse prerework, so a buff WAS needed, but the barrel gimmick has proved very hard for them to balance, as evidenced by his loooong train of nerfs.

And what do we replace it with? A weak, immobiliizing, Cast-time having Aoe AD/AS Steroid? The Barrels give GP something that he needed, Waveclear. He lacks mobility, but makes up for it with Citrus-based Tenacity. He's got poke which gives him a zoning tool.

The things that should honestly change on GP are simple, watch:

Parrley can no longer utilize Melee On-hit effects (Titanic/Ravenous Hydra, Iceborn Gauntlet) Phage's MS Buff should be Reduced in either strength or Duration for Ranged Attacks Barrels can no longer be detonated mid-cast by Parrley'ing another barrel Revert Parrley's Gold/Mana refund changes, while keeping the increased cost give GP slightly higher Base AD, but lower inherent Armor/MR, while increasing the scaling per level Barrels, when exploded should ignore FAR less armor than they currently do, OR not give GP MS. One or the Other. Barrels shouldn't be able to Critically strike either, but should have an AP ratio of about .25, making the Common Trinity Force build a little stronger to Compensate for the Crit loss on Barrels.

Do that, and he becomes a hard to pin, Mostly-Melee fighter, builds 1-2 Damage items, gets tanky, but not absurdly so, and is still able to clear waves lategame

Um... ok. Let's go over what's wrong here.

Proccing melee on-hit abilities and being treated as a melee attack for them is kind of the ONLY thing that makes GP different from any other targetted ability user. It's also the reason he likes the items he does so much. Trinity Force is super good on him because Parrrley procs it. Trinity also no longer gives AP so I'm not sure why you're saying it does and it makes me wonder how much of this is from game knowledge and how much is you talking out your butt. Even IF Trinity still had AP on it, the measly +.25 ratio means he'd get all of +5 or +6 damage on his barrels in exchange for losing the ability to crit for 2 x damage (2.5 x if you have an IE). That's a HUGE nerf man.

Oh, so sorry that I forgot Riot's preseason was intended to completely fuck everything instead of fixing things that actually needed fixing. I haven't had access to my Desktop for about a week and a half now, so Haven't been playing league. Don't see why you need to be rude about it, but petulant children will be petulant children all the same I suppose.

It's also a huge nerf that keeps him from having to be micronerfed into the ground like he's been being. The Barrels are almost as Cancerous as Resets and %Max HP damage on-hit in their current state, and the Core of the changes that I was looking at would have fixed that issue.

Perhaps, instead of cherry-picking your flaws with things, you look at what the overall affect would have been. He's still getting the Sheen Proc on his On-Enemy Parrley's, he's still getting Crits on his On-Enemy Parrley's. The only thing I want changed is the ability to have AOE Crits that can span the entire lane with enough preparation and a dumb enough enemy

Ok then, let's try this again.

You clearly said above "Parrley can no longer proc on hit melee effects" and specifically included Iceborn Gauntlet as an example. Iceborn is a sheen/TF style proc, and an on-hit effect. Now what I'm taking you MEANT to say is "Parrrley is no longer treated as a melee attack but a ranged one for on-hit procs". You weren't clear, but I supposed I can take equal fault there in misunderstanding your intentions, even if they were poorly written.

Phages's MS buff already IS reduced for melee attacks, isn't it? So making Parrrley count as a ranged attack would hit this second point too. The redundancy is part of the reason why I misunderstood your first suggestion as "make Parrrley not crit or apply on-hit effects".

The gross number changes are fine, I guess. I don't know much about GP's base and by level stats beyond that his starting health USED to be the highest in the game and it got nerfed hard.

Not being able to quick-drop a barrel while shooting another to instantly detonate both is a fair change, but it means his barrels will essentially be much, much, MUCH harder to detonate on someone... since they'll have some leeway to escape the blast. If this is the case the damage and armor pen seems like it shouldn't change much since actually landing the skill will be far more uncommon.

Barrels no longer landing crits if they're crit on with Parrrley is a rather large late-game damage nerf that means his barrels will sometimes be far less useful than just directly shooting an enemy for a 250% damage crit. It will mean barrels will fall off into simple waveclear devices late game once his crit is high enough to be reliable. Not a terrible change, but again... this means barrels shouldn't have their damage or armor pen nerfed since they'll be less useful overall AND less damaging late game on single targets than an old-fashioned Q to the face.

So, to take your advice and look at the "overall effect" of things... ALL of the things you've suggested are nerfs with no buffs of any sort. You want to make his barrels do less damage due to lowered armor pen AND less damage due to inability to crit. You want them to be harder to blow up in an enemy's face too, what with the delay before you can shoot another barrel nearby to blow them up. You want him to lose the phage MS boost for melee and only get the one for ranged. Minor, but ok. Essentially, you want him to have very little use for his barrels aside from waveclear?

Ok fine... you want him to keep barrels for waveclear but render them sub-optimal for nearly everything else they do. You seem to think the barrels are a huge problem too, because that's a rather LARGE list of nerfs to a single ability and you literally called them cancerous. So given that we seem to AGREE that they're kinda broken, I still fail to see why my statement of "if the barrels are the issue why not give him a different ability" was THAT big of an outrage that you had to become a raging prick and start directly insulting me... but I'm just gonna assume that you just REALLY wanted to whip out the words "petulant child". That one never comes up in day to day use anymore.

But your attitude isn't forgivable. Your tone is rude and toxic for no reason. If you didn't want anyone to speak to you about your statements and ideas of proposed balance changes... don't post them online. How in the hell would I know you haven't had a working computer and you missed an item change that's been on the PBE for a long while now and the live server for a few weeks? I assumed since you were mentioning numerical changes to his stats that you understood the current stats! Perhaps that was on me for assuming people complaining on the internet had ANY idea what they're talking about... but it's still no reason to lash out with insults directed personally at me and take the stance of a condescending prick who is right because he says so. I'm not a petulant child because I disagree with you. I didn't even disagree with you. I just agreed barrels were the problem and maybe a different ability would be a good idea... and you decided to snap at me like a... well I won't say "like a petulant child".

But that's only because I'm not going assume your age.

If Riot would ever go with something like this I'd seriously quit the game for the inherent retardedness :| I can't understand why people get such a boner frome the idea of Tankplank or Bruiserplank when GP scales so clearly and beautifully with crit (both the old and the new one).

They are nerfing critplank to the ground on pbe...

The only thing they are nerfing on PBE is his passive. All his previous nerfs have been reverted.

I personally say his rework was bloody beautiful. The issue is that the numbers were a bit wonky and instead of carefully tweak them, they gutted his 2 skills and now he is garbage. Gankplank is either all about his Q or his barrels. They nerfed his Q then decided to nerf his barrels as well without reverting the Q?

Until they make a balance GP is garbage.

Divewing1 votes

Honestly i think it's probably just Azir-syndrome, too high a skillcap to be easy to balance for pro AND solo

Slamurai Jack1 votes

I don't think you quite understand just how broken the new GP is on a fundamental level. He's completely dominant at high elo and definitely deserves the nerf he's about to get, if not more.

Jolly Rogered1 votes

JFYI. All the barrel nerfs have been reverted. The only nerf listed now is his passive.
