As a Tanky support, I feel gimped in my item selection and therefore my general usefulness.
As a squishy support/healer, I just literally feel like I'm doing nothing, because I don't do damage.
Actually, with the free month supports, I've been warming up to the role, Zyra is really fun with a lot of damage and zone control, and, though I've owned her for a very long time, Janna's been really fun to play as well. But playing as Janna, and actually doing quite well has sort of opened my eyes to the playstyle that type of support brings, why I'm beginning to actually enjoy it, and why it's so glaringly obvious that I didn't before and why others wouldn't. It's essentially the above statement magnified.
As Janna, I have a variety of tools. My passive gives me and my team movement speed. This is one of those "invisible power" things where the effect doesnt get noticed, but it is very much so there and very much so powerful. Movement speed in general I think falls into this trap, and playing Janna as well as the Preseason in general with the updated air drake has actually had me appreciating movement speed a little more. Add that together with BoM, and I'm one speedy motherfucker, which it is really fun to zip around like that. The movement speed I give my allies is underappreciated, by both myself and probably moreso my teamates. I havent played too terribly much Janna yet, but it hasnt happened to me, and I doubt that it happens much or even at all to others, that Janna's teammates even think to themselves "huh this Janna passive buff really helped me out there."
My Q is pretty cool, I guess. It's a knockup that does negligible to minor damage. The real power with it is when you get it charged up all the way, and sending a fully charged q through even only 2 enemy champions feels great that you were able to pull it off, and the result of it is pretty sweet too. With enough CDR, you can really send out a lot of tornadoes, big and small, as the situation calls for it, and like anyone with spammable hard CC, knocking people up all the time is pretty cool. This skill is probably the highlight of her kit for a lot of people, and it is one with me. My big issue with her q, which is my big issue with a lot of these quishy, healy/shieldy supports, is that it feels like one of the only big meaningful impacts I bring to the table. Not to say that the rest of her kit is useless, or even that her q is the greatest part about Janna, but when I play anything at all ever, I don't only want to do a bunch of good and cool things, I want it to feel like im doing these things.
This was Riots diagnosis with the old Sona. She did all of these great and amazing things for her team, and she played the song of her people (qweqweqewqeqeqweqeq). But... you just kinda felt like you were just... there. I feel like this when I play these supports. Like im just... there. I mean yeah, I'm knocking people up and sheilding them and giving them AD and slowing my enemies and WOW my disengage is insane. But my engage? My sustained usefulness in a teamfight? It's like I feel like I'm not doing anything, but grabbing assists where i can because I can and because it gives me money, not because I feel like I'm helping my team get a kill. It feels like they are capable of that on their own.
The reality is that without my being there, the enemy would have gotten away, or even worse, my teammate would have died otherwise if not for me. I'm saving my team while enabling them. This is my role, and sure I just went 0/0/9 and got a clean victory. But theres something there thats lacking. Is it damage? CC? Just... fighting power in general? I'm not sure, because I know these things are not what Supports need or even want. Even when I have my teammates telling me 'wow what a clutch save' I dont feel like 'yay i did this super cool thing' its more like 'yeah im just doing my job, what do i want, a cookie?' Its like with a carry or a tank role, its very obvious when you get a kill, or you die while your team gets a 4-0 ace, or you take a tower. When you sit back and let your team do all the work, it just feels like... all youre doing is sitting back and letting your team do all the work.
I do get the appeal to that. Not wanting to do all the dirty work, but rather helping your team do it so you dont really have to get your hands dirty. You can make those clutch saves. You can get your ADC fed out the ass. It's great, and despite these flaws, it is legitimately fun.
I think, for a lot of players however, getting saved is more fun than saving, and getting fed is more fun than letting your teammate get fed, and getting kills is more fun than getting assists. I feel like Riot is trying to tackle a problem that seems to be inherent in almost all games out there. No one wants to play support. Ever. Not just in League, but in all games. (Of course with the exception of support mains). The fact that they want to fix that is commendable. The fact that they are pouring so much effort into trying to fix this problems which arguably not many games have been able to fix properly is quite admirable. And the idea that one day Fill wont necessarily mean support, that Support will be just as sought after as any of the other roles, is almost awe-inspiring in itself. That reality almost seems like a dream that will never truly come true for more than a patch or two, and this may just be me being a fanboy, but I believe Riot definitely has the capability of pulling it off very succesfully.
