Formal discussion about the Veigar changes.

I know a lot of you are sick about seeing the Veigar complaints all around the boards, but with the changes confirmed to be coming in the upcoming patch I thought I would give my opinion on them. If you want a TLDR of what this post will sum up check the bottom of the page.

Before you accuse me of being inexperienced with the champion, Veigar has been my main mid laner for quite a while now and I have tested the changes on the PBE quite a bit. So without further adieu lets get into the changes.

**The Q rework:**After testing my amount of farm from the Q before and after the changes it was relatively the same. I am perfectly fine with this ability being a skillshot, but it's worth noting this decreases Veigar's reliability more than you would think. Here is why:

  1. He can no longer consistently harass the enemy from behind the minion wave
  2. He can no longer last hit the low minions in the back of the wave
  3. He now pushes the wave with every Q due to it going through minions
  4. Enemies can block his Q from hitting minions
  5. (Not a bad thing) Is now dodge able
  6. Now has a longer CD late game

Of course there are some pros to this change as well. He now has a longer range on it, and can harass much better late game now. But this isn't what Veigar needed. In the post regarding the changes it says "We wanted to keep Veigars identity as a burst Mage". If anything, this change made him more of a poke Mage, and reduced his burst potential by a landslide.

The E Nerf: The E having a delay is perfectly reasonable, however you have to buff other things in his kit. This E delay COMPLETELY changes so much about him including but not limited to:

  1. It has a .75 second delay with warning particles and a .50 second cast time. That's 1.25 seconds before the walls pop up. Cho'Gath's Q has a .60 second delay.
  2. He can no longer catch people at long distance
  3. Relies on team to engage
  4. Cannot land W in the large area that is the inside of the cage
  5. Cannot peel for himself, especially against mobile champions

I don't think the R changes are worth mentioning as it is obviously a nerf but doesn't effect him much.

Due to the two changes listed above, Veigar is forced to play incredibly safe now. He cannot engage well for a jungle gank, cannot peel for himself, or engage on a target to burst.

I think Veigar is in a much more buffable state because of these changes, but the problem is they made it off of the PBE before they were finished. This would be fine as it allows more testing, but the problem remains that these changes could go unfixed for months. I would greatly appreciate any feedback you guys have regarding these changes, or any solutions you may have to these problems!

TLDR: Veigar now has:

  • Reduced reliability
  • No self peel
  • No consistent harass
  • Less burst
  • A more poke oriented kit
  • A worse early game And the biggest problems
  • No way to land W
  • No reason to play him over anyone else
  • No way to land E against anyone with tier 2 boots or any mobility

No way to land W

This is the big problem to me. Seems like they forgot how reliant W was on E.

It just seems like they nerfed the ability which he relies on the most in the current meta. His low range and long cast time on W relied on his E to set up his combo. This makes me greatly disappointed since he was supposed to be compensated for the dog removal not nerfed.

Also straight up nerfing his ult annoys me further. If Veigar isn't able to one-combo burst champions then what does Riot expect him to do?

If I recall their reason for nerfing the ult was "Veigar was too consistently one-shotting people early game". I find this hard to believe as his Q farming with the new Q may be safer, but is WAY less reliable. Not to mention, I fail to see how he could catch anyone out with the new E let alone land W.

It feels like they literal removed the one thing Veigar excelled at. It's like how they found Talon's silence allowed him to blow people up too easily.

I'm like "That's what an assassin is supposed to do" Just like how "Veigar is supposed to own Mages in game"

I mean Kalista kites people all day and ruins tanks but Riot doesn't seem to find that overwhelming?

I agree with you to an extent, but sometimes a champion can excel a little too well at what they do. Talon may have had his silence removed but he is obviously still in a good place, and is now one of the healthiest assassins in the game. He has obvious counterplay, yet has strengths that make up for it. Veigar on the other hand, never excelled at what he did in the first place. There was no reason to play him over other burst mages/assassins.

On another note at least they did address Kalista needs nerfs, but there is no telling how long it will take them to get around to it. This is also the main reason I am upset about the Veigar changes, there is no telling when they will fix him.

Kind of difficult for his Q to be less reliable at hitting minions considering they can't really juke skillshots. The added difficulty is more from keeping track of the health of multiple minions to farm 2 at a time with Q as opposed to just one, which if done well translates to more AP than you would normally have.

After playing the new one for a while now, two minions rarely line up for a kill on both in the early game. The new Q simply pushes the wave and doesn't allow him to kill the minions in the back of the wave. Also, old Veigar can last hit every minion in the wave with his Q before he runs out of mana, so the amount of AP he gains didn't increase, since the minion wave has the same amount of minions in it.

Late game he can gain Q farm faster, but not necessarily more.

I thought the cast time on E was .25, not .5, that's a lot worse. I feel they should change Veigar's E to have an instant cast, but to have no notification for the enemy. The delay could stay at .5. Since Riot spent a lot of effort making the notification, allies should be able to still see the spinning circle of doom. Q seems to provide a great amount of opportunity of Veigar, by making him a better champion, and requiring more skill to master him. However, the later Q cooldowns should be reduced, since most Veigar's max Q first. Harassing and poking will become difficult, but the bonus AP made up from the Q might compensate for that.

R is fine, since it was nerfed because his Q made it too powerful. W could stay the same, if E is changed.

For now, I feel the best way to play Veigar for the miserable two weeks between patches would to either be:

As an extremely passive Early-Mid game farmer who uses W and Q to get the max AP farm possible, and delete with R+Q, and severely damage squishes with just the Q. The W and E probably would be useless against champions until the teamfights begin.

Another way would to break the meta and play him with a friend who has a champion with CC. You could play Veigar mostly like you used to, except you would have your friend CC the champion you wish to delete, then you land your E and your full combo. Once the enemy champion's CC expires... Ta-ta! Another long stun... and a massive nuke.

In short, Veigar definitely needs to be rebuffed. This nerf would hit him too hard. But in the meantime, we can either wait the two weeks, or experiment different play styles with Vei. No worries, Veigar will be back to take over the world! :D

AGREED. Let me add something.

Firsts things first! 1 All this started cause of dfg. Who the hell build dfg on veigar anyway? Veigar never need it, i never build it. 2 Veigar IS NOT THREAT TO SOLO Q OR THE PROFESSIONAL COMPETITIVE SCENE! Why the HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE NERF? 3 Veigar never need change a t all! What counter play bullshit is this? (As point No2...) 4 I am very sad to verify he is unplayable. He's not veigar anymore, lost identity, that's it.

As he is right now, i am done with him.

I honestly don't mind R changes because as a Veigar main, myself and many other players could easily get up to the 800 AP mark at a relatively fast pace, the changes to Q does hurt a bit now that I can't get the back line of the minion nor can I position myself to attempt to get the casters without putting myself at risk of harass or even death, but that is negligible with some practice with double last hitting. Once again this is another poster that stresses the changes to E, Veigar is no longer playable because you cannot get a select stun. It was already relatively difficult to get a stun off any competent mid laner, even more so on a high mobility one such as zed or fizz. Moreover, Veigar is now much weaker in teamfights because he no longer has the ability to initiate it with his stun, and if the opposing team knows that his stun is down, it's over. Veigar can no longer peel for himself either which poses as a huge problem considering majority of the new champions in league have excellent gap closers and mobility. I don't know why they insist that there is no counterplay to Veigars stun when you can press S and then proceed to destroy him because a good deal of Veigars dmg consists of his W which is practically impossible to land without the stun.

TL;DR: Veigar can't run, peel, initiate, or burst anymore.

Just played him in an ARAM. I've played him quite a bit in ARAMS and after his changes he feels awful to play now. I realize this was an ARAM and its clear new veigar is going to rely HEAVILY on his team comp to be effective. That E change really gimped him. His E is the glue that held his kit together to be functional and since its so unreliable so is the rest of his kit.
