Thoughts on Omnistone, and how to improve

I think that Omnistone is a really cool concept for a rune, but in practice the randomness ends up either making you useless for a little while or giving you just the right combination for there to be little counterplay for the enemy. RNG is never a good aspect to have as a core mechanic in a game like this, and I think all Omnistone needs is a push towards consistency. I have a few ideas that would be implemented **separately **from each other.

  1. Have Omnistone cycle through the keystones of your secondary Runes So if you take Omni + Resolve, you'll cycle through grasp aftershock and guardian situationally dependent on your ability to CC, and if there is an ally around. If you take Omni + Domination, you'll cycle through electrocute, DH, and predator. You get the jist.

  2. Instead of rerolling your rune in base, it should reroll when you touch the side of your tower closest to a wall. This allows you to exit lane for a moment to get the next rune, and hopefully have it be one that is more useful in the situation. Slap a 2 minute cooldown on this, unique to each tower.

  3. When you base, have 3 random keystones show up on the different directions you can walk out of fountain. When you walk over it, you collect it like Rift Herald's drop and the other two disappear. This lets you walk into lane with an optimal keystone, or help you get there faster like with predator. You could also opt to not pick one of these up, and get a random other one whenever your current keystone rerolls. This even allows you to base and then TP with the rune you have not rerolling, which can sometimes be unfortunate.

Those are my thoughts, hope they provide some discussion on the rune! Consensus appears to be that the rune doesn't work well on many champs, and the champs it does work OK on you're mostly taking it to get those sweet sweet inspiration runes.

It doesn't just reroll in the base, it rerolls out of combat after a delay.

Omnistone is great if you are playing a champion that can actually proc every keystone. If you can chain them together, it generate a ton of value, giving you several full keystone procs in a row in a time span you're lane opponent might only get one.

There is just way too much variance for this ever to be balanced on probably 85-90% of all champions.. Riot just needs to put in the effort to pick say, 4 appropriate keystones for each champion and have it cycle between them.

Bard: Comet, Electrocute, Hail of Blades, Guardian.

Zyra: Comet, Aery, Dark Harvest, Electrocute.

Trundle: Conquerer, Grasp, PtA, Predator.

Etc.

The three mentioned champs all prefer the stability of having one set keystone. Senna likes Aery or DH, Pantheon likes Conq or maybe electrocute, and Illaoi likes Conq. None of these champs benefit from the random aspect of the keystone, they only suffer from it. Simply being able to proc all of them somewhat easily isn't enough to benefit from Omnistone as is. All you have to do to see that Omnistone isn't really all that good right now is look at how many champs on probuilds.net are not taking it at all, or not doing well with it the odd time it appears. Neace recently said that logically Omnistone is the best rune for Twisted Fate right now since klepto is gone, but almost no one is taking it. I've been playing a TON of AD TF with Omnistone and outside of getting clutch predators I've never felt that the random switch of keystones was beneficial.

Any champ who likes Omnistone is going to like any of the changes I proposed in any case, as they get rid of part of the unreliability. If a midlaner could get electrocute into dark harvest for a kill, and then roam with predator? Ideal. But it's too random so you'll probably get something more like Grasp aery fleet lol.

This keystone is a troll. Even if you play a champion that can reliably proc all the keystones you are almost always just going to be better off sticking with one.
