Blue Essence can get obtained from disenchanting champion loot. Blue seems to be required to upgrade your champion shards and orange for skins and wards.

well that sucks, initially chests were easy to come by but I haven't found one in a long time. not really getting any loot and would like to upgrade 2 champs but lack the blue essence for both upgrades, already have the S shards.
