Are Gold Runes Worth It?

No, the early game is too important and you lose early pressure by taking those instead of flat stat increase runes.

They also really don't give that much gold compared to passive gold income.

A long time ago they were seen as mandatoryfor supports to get due to them being expected to buy endless wards.

This has changed with time since things like sightstone were added and in turn supports are now more likely to get some items instead of having to put all of their resources towards wards after Gold per 5 items.

You might be able to justify it in some rare situations but it is overall not worth getting.

They remove one stat that could in theory be DPS or Defense in trade for a bit of extra gold that you'd earn anyways from DPS and Defense.

Unless there's a more passive mode, it's not helping you. If you decide to use them, it'll probably be on a support who isn't actively engaging except from the back of the fight.

I still use them when I support... helps me get to full build more quickly. Am I doing it wrong?

Maybe,if you are playing ardent censer support,and you got buddy adc,not blind picked one.And if you can make him to buy relic shield as first item instead of doran's blade,and you get ancient coin,or whatever. Your ADC can support you that way,giving you more gold so you can get ardent faster,way faster than opponents,so you get power spike earlier,dominate lane,and eventually turn match in your favour.

But I think that's the only,and only situation that you want to get gold per 10 sec runes instead of ap or defensive runes that will give you more sustain/power in early game.

Also you don't want to engage and open fights early,as your adc has no doran's blade,and you got no defensive runes either.So you and your adc have to play passivly,and focus on minions.

If you are going solo blind pick ,draft pick ,ranked,with support gp10 then at least play ardent censer supports,but I don't think you will do it better with those runes instead of standard runes for your champi,you can still get ardent earlier but not if you give enemy team few kills .So you need to play defensivly,passivly and with mentality that you are walking banana.
