Should I be playing mage sent botlane for support?

I play Thresh support. I just got back from holiday break and haven't played in 3 weeks. My thresh game is rusty but it feels like actually picking a support champ instead of a mage is putting me at a disadvantage. I realize that high elo players with skilled mechanics can be a nightmare on thresh (which is why i like playing him) but I also believe that to play thresh well your mechanics have to be very developed. Were Brand or Zyra seems relatively ez to play and does well in the bot lane, Thresh feels like unless our jungler ganks successfully Im gonna have a bad time. With towers how they are now (especially bot tower) and all things considered is picking a support champ like Thresh a bad idea at this time? Thanks for the help. ps. I'd like to know what yall think about the state of bot lane right now too.

The mage supports actually take a little more skill due to mana management and landing some awkward skill shots - but thr payoff is good. On that same breath, Thresh operates in the same way, but is tank and can seriously disrupt opponents a lot easier than mages can. If you like Thresh, run Thresh. Thresh can thrash mage supports really well if he can snare them and dislodge them into a vulnerable position - especially if they've blown their mana trying to poke.
