Because Silver 1/gold 5 isn't especially high elo, and it's reasonable to see players in their placements there? Where should players play their placement games, bronze 5?

Were you on a hot streak? Riot likes to match people who are on a hot streak with weaker players. And while in this case its not hard to believe a player with plat+ MMR in normals could make it to gold MMR as an unranked... Its absolutely ridiculous they were able to play with someone in their promos, which is something riot supposedly tracks.
I have had it happen before at that Elo, its cause he most likely won first 3 or 4 games and they want to see if he is gold or not. If you won he would get placed even higher. [slayer-jinx-wink]
