"But this is just normals.."

I hate that reason for anything. I was recently in a match where my adc (Graves) had 3 doran's blade and always went into the lane too aggressively allowing himself to get killed (he was unskilled from what I could tell) and always ventured off into the enemy jungle, getting the buffs only to die to the enemy team and giving them those buffs.

So, this is what happened: Me: Report Graves please, he's off killing jungle camps while his team is in a team fight dying Enemy Sivir: So? Me: So.. he hasn't contributed all match.. he does what he pleases (was really hard not to make a Mundo joke) Enemy Sivir: I would report him if this was ranked but it's just normals

THAT IS THE PROBLEM. All too often I encounter these type of people who think it's ok to do whatever you want or to not report because "it's just normals".

Let me ask you this: Do you want people to go from practicing in AI matches then jump right into ranked on YOUR team? Normals (classic, TB, whatever, anything not ranked obviously) is a true practice lesson. People go into normals to get ready for ranked and fight actual players, that's a good thing. I don't want someone who has practiced jungling for 50+ games in AI then all of the sudden goes into ranked and says "Guys I'm a good jungler" with NO prior pvp experience.

So please, if you are one of those people who say "It's just normals.." stop.. you should take normals as seriously as ranked (without the rage and negative attitude).

TL;DR- Normals is a practice ground for preparing you to get ready for ranked, so please do not think that because it isn't ranked you shouldn't report people for the right reason. This type of stuff gets carried over into ranked, if no one reports them in normals then they will think they don't need any improvements.

Remember, just because it isn't ranked doesn't mean ranked players aren't playing normals, so why take it any less seriously

Because it IS less serious. If I wanted seriousness, I would play ranked where fun is explicitly not allowed.

Sarcastic remarks aside, you should always try and play to win. However, playing to win does NOT take precedence over having fun or trying new things. If your Graves wants to try counter-jungling, LET HIM TRY! That's something that can really impact a game (ranked included!) if pulled off successfully. Shoot, maybe even back him up, see if you can get a pick. Team work goes both ways, of course. I'm not excusing or justifying ignoring your team.

In the end, this is a game. It's not a job (for most people). It's not something that determines the fate of your life, the universe, or anything beyond your MMR. It's fine to take ranked with more seriousness than normal (it's a competetive game after all), but saying that people shouldn't be having fun in normals is going too far.

Just because it's a game, doesn't mean you canv ruin 4 other peoples games. Some people might be ACTUALLY practicing, not feeding (like it seems Graves was doing in the OP).

If you want to have fun, go play AI. One person can carry 25 people there, so you can go ahead and play base minefield Teemo without destroying a players game.

Fun goes both ways. He constantly ignoring the team to go into un-warded enemy jungle every time and dying ruined any "fun" we might have had. It's only fun when people are in agreement, but all of us wanted him to team fight and he didn't. That isn't an excuse for him to "try" and counter jungle. Trust me, if you saw how poorly he performed you would know he was unskilled. I even pinged him multiple times to wait for me (I was Blitz) and he just went in anyway then when he got ganked in a 1v4 or 1v3 he would say "wtf". Every. Single. Time.

So your fun > everyone else's.

If Graves was going to do anything like that, experimenting counter jungling and the like, that should be communicated normals or not so your team can compensate for it. There is no excuse for not communicating and doing things on your own in a team oriented game such as this. Especially in the ADC position where they need to communicate with their support to be effective. Fun is well and good but not at the expense of the fun of your teammates. Whenever I am trying a new role or if I experiment I always tell my team before hand and if I'm not successful I apologize and I try to play it safe until I get back into a better spot. I don't know the entire story but from this perspective Graves should've communicated.

**I agree with you wholeheartedly. **I even go so far as to clarify, "I'm not excusing or justifying ignoring your team." However, when the OP posits that, "normals should be taken as seriously as ranked," I disagree. If you never tried anything different (silly or not), you'd never get anywhere. Perhaps the Graves is a bad example about what I'm trying to communicate.

Here's one from my personal experience. I was feeling frustrated trying to find a good way to play Evelynn. I wasn't liking the full AP or AD bruiser builds. So I thought about it, and I decided to try something totally off the wall: What if I just built Eve full crit? Why not; this is something I'd usually do to blow off steam when I was having a bad day with mages anyway (they never expect the banana after all.) This isn't something I'd dream of doing in ranked, so I started theory crafting in normals.

The TL;DR is that I took this wacky build that would have gotten me reported in ranked, and found a way to make it work consistently. If I had been taking it super seriously, I never would have discovered it. It's by far the most fun I've had with Eve.

Okay, this completely communicates what you were trying to say. I appreciate the clarification. I agree that normals shouldn't be treated as seriously as ranked, just don't screw your team over by lack of communication. I think that is definitely something we can agree on yes? Not to mention I have made some great friends by being friendly and apologetic even if I was losing lane. In some cases I have come back from losing that lane or other lanes will like three man gank my lane and we will take turret and I'll get caught up in CS and I'll get a kill or two and then I'm ahead.

Most of what you listed is NOT reportable.

Unskilled: Not really reportable. There IS an entry for it but it has never led to punishment.

Going super aggro: not reportable.

Doing what he wants: probably not reportable. (Possible under failure to communicate but I probably would not punish for this.)

3 dorans: Most likely to be reportable.

If you really feel he was unskilled then try to give him tips. Yes, its kinda hard to write a guide in game. But I have been on both sides of the subtle but important in game tips.

Still possibly worth reporting him as Unskilled. That report option is used to help Riot manually adjust a player's matchmaking experience in extreme cases.

What?, Dorans stacking is a viable strategy when you're losing lane HARD and want to have a chance to pick yourself up, kinda like rushing BT as an ADC in a losing lane.

This Graves was a poor player, that's it, but that's not reportable at all, you just suck it up and hope his MMR goes down from this loss.

Maybe you should respect the fact that some people just want to play league casually and have fun. Don't know why you're so upset...

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Actually there was a while where I jumped back and forth between Co-op and Ranked. If I could work up the motivation for PvP at all, then I'd just go all the way and jump into a Ranked game. Worked my way up to Gold doing that last season.

I'm with you almost all the way. I would only add two things:

  1. I think there is (and should be) more leeway for being experimental in normals. If you want to try your off-meta pick (Support Orianna?) in normals, that's fine (so long as it's not something horrendous like Support Nasus). But please try to do your best with it, and don't play it in ranked unless you've actually made it work.

  2. I also appreciate that some people play normals instead of ranked simply because they are being more "casual/have fun" than "try hard to win." Personally I am of the latter mindset 100% of the time, but I think there has to be some room for the first. There's a line somewhere beyond which you're basically just trolling your team, but I don't think it's right for those of us who "take this seriously" to deny people the opportunity to try out the Shaco/Blitzcrank bot lane :)

I don't care if it's a normal, it's a waste of 40 minutes of my life. Not fun.

Need context.

"It's just a normal," because I am trying an offpick I've never used before and it blew up in my face? Perfectly valid.

"It's just a normal," as a scapegoat because I fed in lane then went on tilt and played poorly? Not a chance.

I mean, that's where you're SUPPOSED to try new stuff. Only a douche plays new stuff in Ranked at the expense of their team. You're supposed to try your absolute best there.
