Finished Silver 3 last season, then got placed silver 5 and nobody knows why I got placed so high

I know it is normal for people to get dropped a whole rank, in my case, usually it would be from silver 3 to bronze 3. But instead I got placed in Silver 5 with a 4-6 win loss record and everyone I know is jealous/mad at me, what could of possibly happened for me to get placed super high compared to last seasons rank??

You always get placed lower than you were the previous season. It's been a thing for a while.

Honestly last year was an actual mess, we had diamonds being placed in silver and plats and golds placed in bronze, no clue what they did to the math last year, but it was by far the worse placements riot had ever done. The community was very outraged about this, and high tier youtubers even made fun of it, showing how easy their ranked games were and one sided they were since they were diamond playing against silvers. My assumption is riot acknowledged they fucked up and heavily modified the way placements functions for the better.

It's all mmr based and doesn't actually care about your final rank per se (rank usually catches up to mmr quick enough so it's usually close enough to talk about ranks), so most likely you were silver 3 with a relatively high mmr.

Losing a full tier is more of a rule of thumb so peoples expectations are realistic, but it can vary a few divisions too, again depending on your mmr and the mmr of those who happened to be in your placement matches (you're generally matched with similar mmr people since that's the point, but depending on queue times and/or duos sometimes you can face slightly higher/lower mmr people and it can impact your placement by a division or so).
