Not that I'd like Stopwatch Meta, but we kind of also are in Flash Meta for years

I always found it weird how lack of diversity is tolerated with Summoner Spells.

I was recently watching Tobias and he got killed by TF who flashed and said: ,,But it's okay he doesn't have flash, so If he gets ganked he's dead." Like imagine how much more safe you feel in lane when you know you can safely flash the gank in most cases. And then there are champions who get very cancerous when they combine their combo with Flash like Annie, who might be better off being balanced around not having Flash available.

Flash is so much better that it is mandatory and there are only few special cases such as taking Ghost on some Juggernauts or Ignite on Shaco Jungle when it is not taken. To the point when you really only choose one other Summoner Spell. And yet there is no big uproar about that.

I realize the major differences, that with Flash, it costs you only SS slot, while with Stopwatch it costs you both Rune slot and you cannot choose the two other Runes and also Stopwatch can be sold for raw gold, but the recent video that made it high on Boards where there was teamfight and everyone was Stopwatching one moment or another makes me think If the same video would contain everyone flashing into safety instead, If there would be still the same uproar about it.

I won't mind Stopwatch being heavily nerfed or removed and If everyone likes Summoners this way I am not asking for changes, but I just wanted to share this food for thought, how we basically got used to Flash Meta, but complain about very similar case just because it's new.

I remember Riot discussing about giving Flash as a baseline ability to every champion, since, as you pointed out, except in rare cases, Flash really isn't a choice.

Flash is just such a fundamental part of LoL, it's almost part of the core mechanics of the game, much like CSing, Dragon Timer, Tower aggro. You just can't remove it or change it without changing the whole game around it.

Try to picture how hard the game would be to rebalance if they suddenly removed Flash. Champions with low mobility would be in desperate need of a buff. Assassin would barely have any counter anymore since you can't Flash their burst. Any tank and bruisers with lots of CC or slows (TahmKenchitem 3022)would become so freakin' cancerous.

On the other hand Stopwatch is just a strong rune choice that gives you a strong lead advantage. Last season was all about item 3504, this season is about item 2420. Having the item vs not having it gives you a gold advantage over the enemy, which is a balance problem. item 3504 used to be so powerful that it's power budget was well over it's price cost. The same could be said for Stopwatch if you compare it to other rune choices. You get a 600gold item at 6min, that also gives you a free 400gold ticket for its upgrades (or a flat 120gold if sold) so it's either a 1k gold (or 720gold) lead, compared to other choices. It's huge!

Flash on the other hand is balanced around the fact that everyone has it, and it's on a 5 minute cooldown.

In my opinion, acceleration in all respects wins the flush. They are easier to catch up and escape. The jump through the wall is not so strong and decides because almost all the meta characters have their tug or they can run through the walls.

The problem is Riot cannot remove flash. Half the roster would literally become useless without it. Riot accepted flash as an integral part of League and balanced the game around its existence.

If metas are climate then flash is air, it'll always be here and that's not a bad thing. League would be less fun without it.
