TLDR of Eternals

Why Do They Exist?

We've been thinking we haven't made new way of creating easy content that we can monetize the shit from recently, and so after selling the same missions periodically as "passes" and even ugly golden chromas, we are now selling achievements for real money.

We will, of course, use the excuse of "rarity", as If the achievement itself didn't already ensure that, the same way we used this excuse for something as backbone-less as Prestigue skins. Which fits because now you'll be basically paying for small flare on something you've already grinded for.

Stay tuned for another feature we'll come up with in the future, that will be defended because this game is "free to play", although not really since we lock 90% of content we come up with behind paywall after paywall, not to mentoin scummy RNG factors that support gambling in children-accessible game because in Riot Games many things are important but morality isn't one of them. Which happens when you are owned by company from country that checks the contents of private mobile messages of their citizens.

Our gains are low because 80% of those gains go to our PR department to make these speeches witch disguise our greed as attempt to make something "rare" and "exciting" and "new" and frankly, If so many people weren't addicted to this game and we didn't aim for popularity, it would be 20€ per month subscription model long ago.

Next month we will reveal return of Rotating Game Modes you have all been anticipating so much. Most of them are already done but we are still fleshing out the 5 different ways we'll monetize them with because this game has no longer any spirit, just business.

Also don't forget that we only monetize this because it took so much effort to make, but let's ignore how the general system will allow us to factory-spit-out tons of these with no effort and the cost of the system will go back 1000 times with the first two additional releases that will be the same basic system with different variables, the same as we pretend that each mission pass is something new although we have been milking the same system for nearly a year now.

We are happy to have this community, that hasn't yet realized that we found the goldmine, as we found a way to easily factory-make loads of content that provide much more net gains than making offline single-player detailistically manufactured experience and sell it for pathetic 40€. Also our Rioters do perfect job at personalizing our company so people look at all the great people behind the game, rather than looking at us as corporate, which would result in the same hatred people keep towards banks once they realize these institutions function to only milk people out of money under guise of monetary help.

You might've noticed this our new factory mass production approach with recent champion releases, which are boring make-10-at-a-time ads for their release skins and those who gain popularity, like our voidgirl, will become permanent ads for events. But it's all right because in the end of the day, this game is free and my 20 children will starve If we held any spark of morality in our financial system.

Next week, we will hold live stream with our Art Department that we also like to call The Mortar That Desperately Holds Our Shit Together.

Peace.

Also do you know how we joked that masteries beyond 7 will be behind paywall? . . . . . Yeah

Arakadia2 votes

Wait did they really say this? Do you know where?

ModWuks6 votes

Eternals will add flare(s) to existing mastery emotes.

Arakadia4 votes

Right, but apparently Riot even joked they would make post mastery 7 achievement locked behind a paywall, which was what I wanted to know if it was legit.

ModWuks10 votes

I think Velzard was breaking character and saying that the community joked that masteries 8+ would be behind a paywall.

Oh your right.

Like so many people have been saying, League is past its prime, with old players quitting and fewer newbies joining, and Riot is going nuts trying to save it, except their attempts just change the game to something old players dislike, making them quite faster and in larger droves, but still not having enough flair to compete with the newer stuff like VR.

They should just pull a Minecraft, tbh. Keep what they can, maintain their veteran population, wait for people to come back. A game like League won't really die by itself with proper maintenance if they just keep what made League so popular back in the earlier seasons. Eventually, the old playerbase will come back due to nostalgia and stabilized lives (A lot of the old peeps quitting are starting to get jobs and families/into universities!).

Honestly even with the trash they're doing League probably has 5-10 years of life at least

This game still has esports and buckets of money and at the end of the day, even if lots of people agree, boards are a vocal minority. Even if they're bleeding players Riot is always happy with short term money. This game isn't going to die without the CEO walking out rich and let the players be damned.

You're right, but Reddit doesn't seem to happy either. But ye, I get the impression that they're ready to jump ship soon and just take what money they've made to start a new project.

Next they'll monetize the RGMS. You have to pay $6 to buy a pass to play ARURF or whatever for the week its out. Then the next time it comes back, you gotta pay another $6.

If RIot sold a pass that allowed you to play old game modes, then people would buy it.

And I'd certainly pay for a subscription to a legacy server.

You'll be able to play for free, but for the "rewards" you gotta buy the ARURF pass

What you pay for exclusively with RP in the game: skins (cosmetics), passes (for cosmetics), some ward skins (cosmetics), most emotes (cosmetics), some icons (cosmetics), little legends (cosmetics)

What you can unlock through playing: champions, chromas (essence emporium), rune pages, some event items, some emotes, some icons, masteries.

And technically, you can earn paid skins/emotes through chest loots.

Riot really is fine, they give plenty of free stuff all the time. But they also release a ton of paid stuff, so it feels like they're scummy but really it's just because there is just so much paid content that you don't realize how much free the game is.

More or less. While its there, you can buy all the chromas for champs (except ones that released within a few months of it) for BE, as well as some emotes and a rare skin.

These Eternals have overstepped their acceptable "they're a free-to-play game and need to make money somehow" defense. Except not only did they overstep the line, they loaded themselves into a cannon and fired it over the hemisphere. This Eternals shit signifies a dark path towards ugly, ugly monetization of some pretty core things about the game. Champion mastery shouldn't be something we need to pay for, and I've literally never seen ANY GAME EVER in my entire life that makes you purchase an achievement system (and not even the entire system in this case, it's PER SINGLE CHAMPION!). They always have come included with the game and cost nothing extra, even in free-to-play games I've played - and I've played quite a bit of those. This is especially bad because by buying into this Eternals thing, you're not getting anything out of it aside from getting your e-peen jerked off by the text in the client. There's nothing substantial to these Eternals, and they're not at all worth any kind of money Riot might conceivably try to tack onto them.

Wolfeur4 votes

Listen, I find that weird too, and I'm probably not gonna pay for it, but saying it's a dark path is overstating it. It's a secondary thing, that is far from necessary (the game did very well without it for 10 years) and they're adding it because players have been insisting on getting something of that sort.

It doesn't affect gameplay, we don't even know the price yet, and it doesn't have any lootbox element to it. It's to pay once, and get exactly what you're expecting to get. It's not scummy, it's not made to extort tons of money off psychologically weak people.

At worst, you can complain to Riot that they're naive to think it's gonna be successful or even well received. But I'm seeing people comparing that to EA shit and we need to keep comparisons sensible. The game itself is not gonna be worse because of it, you're not gonna be forced to have it to enjoy the game, and it's not making you pay for what was free before. It's a new thing, it's a paid side mechanic and it's honestly far from the worst thing that could happen.

People here need to take a step back and look at the state of League's monetization with a fresh eye. There is really nothing that's even remotely similar to what EA or Activision gives you.

TwitchInMyPants4 votes

Its 850 RP per 3 statues and its for one champion. They confirmed on Twitter.

Its easily much worse than any skin I could by at 10$ and they've already released cosmetics at better value like emotes which you can use in any mode all the time and other skins. At 145 champions you need 123,250 RP just for a system that puts a number above your champion mastery and a thing on your profile at the end of the day. Its a complete scam.

Frankly I would've rather them never added achievements lol. Or if they wanted monetized achievements make it something like you need 1 skin in order to use the system. This is the most hamfisted and greedy way to implement this, I can play tons of other F2P games with systems like this without anywhere near this cost. Games that I pay 10-60$ for I get the entire achievement system. If I bought these things in 10$ incriments this would cost 910$ to have the Etenerals for Every champion. This system is absolutely not worth that much.

Its strange they reference DotA's subscription system when it offers far more features than this for a much cheaper price, Riot painted a target on themselves with this trash system.

Calling this a dark path is not an overstatement in the slightest. We've already witnessed how their monetization has led to more and more and more monetization. Events started out simple, then got event buy ins that got you a little something else, then it evolved into the insane token grinding, then prestige skins came out, and so forth and so forth, and now event passes are literally back to back to back and bombarding us with stuff. Sure, for now it's advanced side missions for specific champions that are paid, but how long until they start monetizing things ranked rewards or ARAM? You see, while it seems fairly irrelevant now, it's a foot in the door that they have the potential to kick open into a lot of other crummy business practices. If you don't stop it now, it will escalate as they press the extent to which they can squeeze money out of players.

Except League came before Dota2 by about 3+ years. I think you are referring to the original DotA mod, which the founders of Riot were for a period its substantial contributors. Unless you believe reiterating your own creation and work somewhere else is plagiarism; ie plagiarising yourself is somehow a thing (which can be a thing, but only in the context of publishers and all that. But since we're taking about the original DotA being a mod for Warcraft3 and Riot is also their own publisher, plagiarism is only in the context of whether Riot infringes upon Blizzard's game asset which they did not and neither did Valve when they made Dota2).

Also, Icefrog, the current de facto guy of Dota2, was recruited by the founders of Riot as a pair of helping hands when they were developing the original DotA mod. He is credited for very little for the things in the original DotA simply because he wasn't a designer but more of an intern who was around and does a few things. But that doesn't stop him from claiming all of DotA as his to make a Dota2 that's basically a remake of the original mod, now does it? You know, with plagiarism being about passing off someone else's work as yours, so who is more fitting for the plagiarist remark hmm?

Then again, in the end of the day, the original DotA was a mod. Modding works on the basis of good will and faith, you can rip anyone off and it won't run into any issues. All of it rests on what feels appropriate and whether you've not acted like an asshole when you rip someone off.

Also Dota2's optimisation is dogshit last time I checked. Say what you want about League's current optimisation (it used to be good tho, but the new client fucked it up), but Dota2's optimisation is something else.
