Nice to have an AP Zed now but with cc

He's not even out, he's been on the PBE a day and you're already whining?

He's mana based so his lane phase will actually have resource gating.

He has to land 3 auto attacks for his passive to proc instead of just getting it for free as an execute.

He's mana based so his mid game will actually have resource gating and he may even have to buy a mana item instead of 100% damage (gasp)

His ult only does damage if he puts himself in danger with it, unlike Zed who's ult takes him away from danger after he uses it.

Ekko's not really an assassin, he's more of an AP fighter like Diana. Assassins don't get much cc, if any.

Well most of his ap scalings aren't that big, and his w deals no dmg, it just gives him a huge shield and stuns enemies if he enters the zone too, he would indeed excel in killing low hp enemies as it seems that his w passive procs for every hit if they are below 30% hp instead of having a time of using it again.
