Extra Item Slot Just For Wards?

Have you ever been in the middle of building and item and all your slots are being used for its parts thinking, "Wow. I really wish I could place a ward, but I don't have any room." I think it would be a really good idea if there was a way to buy and place wards even if you already have 6 items (not including trinkets). It would be another way to spend late game money on something other than elixirs. What do you think?

Your performance on the Rift is partially determined by how well you manage your items and inventory. As such, if you play your champion well, there is not really a necessity for having an extra item slot.

Early on in the game, when you are needing to ward up your lane, it is unlikely that all of your item slots will be filled up (unless perhaps you are trying to build up to multiple items at once). Later in the game, if you begin to run out of inventory space, your trinket is still there to act as a ward. Plus, the ability to upgrade it into a mini-sightstone is extremely powerful.

I think bought wards and sightstone should be removed from the game, and vision left entirely to trinkets, but assuming that doesn't happen, then yes, that'd be nice.

It's a thing called the trinket slot, maybe you've heard of it before?

  1. Yes, it's called trinkets. And yes I know you've mentioned it, but this was Riot's purpose, and I don't think they would want to make another space for another ward purchase when you have the upraded yellow trinket to build.

  2. Nobody loves buying wards, especially Bronze/Silver & stubborn supports.

It's called yellow trinket and sightstone. Pick yours.

We already have one.

It's called the trinket slot.

I think it's so dumb how people argue that number of slots adds anything to gameplay, especially when the slot you'd add can't be used for stats.

What does a slot cap add in the first place? It makes sure you can't stack Doran's items, but when you compare League to it's predecessor, you'll see that the cheaper items in Dota were more stat efficient than more expensive items, while the opposite is true in League. So, even if you could stack 10 Doran's items, you still wouldn't come out nearly as far ahead.

The other thing it adds is a hard cap on itemization/stats, but this only occurs endgame. Most games don't even get to this point. In this case, adding a slot specifically for wards would make completing items on 5 slots easier, but I don't really think any interesting gameplay is added (especially in this age of trinkets) by forcing a player to choose between building a component of their next item or buying wards. Hell, you might actually see non-supports help more with warding!

(Honestly, I think trinkets were a hamfisted solution to Riot's vision problem that doesn't change the fact that a ward-only slot wouldn't harm the game.)

Probably won't ever happen. Sightstone would become even more useless and warding trinkets would probably end up being replaced with even more sweepers because of the easier access to wards.

I'm not sure how long you've been around, but trinkets weren't always in the game. It used to be that Supports would end up sacrificing an item slot or two to carry all of the team's wards. This was seen as a strategic trade-off in exchange for the vision.

In the current game state, Sightstone helps partially nullify the downsides of being forced to carry the team's wards. This also allows the Support to carry a Sweeper and provide vision to their own team while also denying vision from the other team. Throw a free ward slot in and suddenly the Support isn't the only one with easy access to both. I would suspect that, in the highest levels of play, almost every player would have a Sweeper, as warding trinkets would have to compete with an item slot completely dedicated to wards.

A slot just for wards would void the purpose of the trinket, because essentially that's what the trinket slot was meant to do.

I'd rather people just understand how powerful the upgraded vision trinkets are AND START UPGRADING IT. And stop bitching at me for 'omg the support isn't warding!' when I'm 3/3 and they're level 15 with a basic trinket.

This is why the support is the one who takes item 3364

Snakezzy6/14/2015, 4:56:19 PM1 votes

No, this would take a certain part of the game away. You have to decide whether you want to keep potions or get wards in some cases. Also, don't you already get a free trinket spot just for wards and sweepers?

its called ur fuckin trinket

thats literally why they put them in the game

upgrade your yellow trinket and you basically have a sightstone

Yus pls, I need to spam pinks with my stealths.

Dang. I suggested this last year and I got downvoted to oblivion.

I wouldn't mind a slot for wards. I think the argument however was that you trade off having a slot for wards for having a complete build. Also now we have upgradable trinkets so it's easier to keep the map warded even into very late game.

I was thinking of expanding the current Trinket system with more ward types, and equivalent counters to each in exchange, while allowing every player to get one Warding and one Negating trinket.

Let's say we introduce mobile 'wards' that are equivalent to item 3023 's Ghosts, minus the slow, and/or an equivalent to a weaker version of the Wolve's smite effect in the jungle.

We can then open up a trinket that would disable all vision (without revealing them) from all wards in an area for several seconds to counter those mobile 'wards', and others.

As far as Pink Wards go, i'm not sure, but perhaps adding True Sight to the Ghosts instead might work, or maybe a Pink Trinket could allow its wearer to have more than one Pink, on a longer cooldown, since they'd likely be the only ones able to plant 'em. Either way, with this kind of system, there are infinite possibilities, we just need to think about them. Hell, even discounting the idea of mobile wards, we've got a lot of room to work with. Long range wards, larger line of sight wards...

NinjaFifer6/14/2015, 8:41:02 AM1 votes

I just UPGRADE my TRINKET (Sorry, those words are on auto caps lock since I have to yell it at my teammates 10 times a match) and keep my 3 max wards out just about all the time. I'll throw a pink ward in there every so often, but since I have my other three wards up at all times, it's a lesser issue.

Side note: I upgrade my trinket as soon as I hit 9 and have a chance to buy. I will forgo buying a real item, and sometimes even finishing a full item just to do it. Vision is just that important.

RisenDarkKnight6/14/2015, 1:35:35 PM1 votes

This would have been an amazing change, but upgraded yellow trinket lets you keep up 3 wards at all times without using an item slot. You usually don't use all your item slots before lvl 9. I still think they shoudl have a consumable inventory slot or 2 a la smite that can hold wards or potioin or elixirs. But lately I always rush upgraded yellow trinket. I guess this would also be nice late game when ur pink ward gets killed and you have 6 items so you can't replace it.
