Can Skirmishers be not so frustrating to play against?

Description of skirmishers (http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/gameplay/dev-blog-classes-subclasses ) Unlike Assassins, Skirmishers aim to shred through _any _nearby enemy that approaches. Because Skirmishers lack high-end burst damage or reliable ways of closing in on high-priority targets, they are instead armed with situationally powerful defensive tools to survive in the fray, along with extreme sustained damage to cut down even the most durable targets.

Official list of skirmishers (http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/3A5uuBw7-champion-subclass-list ) Fiora Riven Yasuo Tryndamere Master Yi Jax (I'd argue he's just a diver, but he's officially classified as a skirmisher) Ekko (I'd also put Ryze, Vayne, and maybe Katarina here, but you're free to disagree)

Now I'm not saying they're all broken/OP/whatever. I'm simply saying that skirmishers, by design, are frustrating to play against. And it makes sense, since they're given "situationally powerful defensive tools," which are almost always going to be frustrating to play against. Fiora's Riposte and a bunch of true damage could be balanced, but it will always feel like bullshit to play against. Same with Riven's knockup and stun, even though objectively her CC is so much lower than pretty much all the tanks and half the fighters (guesstimating). Yasuo's "no CD" dash and crit passive, and so on.

It seems like the balancing goal for these champions is giving the enemy some ways to counterplay, but that isn't always possible given that skirmishers need the tools to make plays in the first place. If the two players (one skirmisher, and let's say one fighter) are in a 1v1 and the fighter has just as good of a chance to outplay the skirmisher, there's really no reason to pick up the skirmisher.

So here's my question: is it possible to give a skirmisher tools to outplay their opponents, but still be fair to play against? Or is that impossible?

I'm not frustrated when I play vs skirmishers.

Skirmishers are balanced in a 5v5 league of legends game where the objective is to destroy the enemy Nexus.

Skirmishers are not balanced in 1v1 LCS big plays silver montages.

The thing w/ all those guys, is that if they are even or behind, and your team groups properly and members don't get caught alone, they can all pretty easily be cc'd/blown up, with the exception of possibly trynda b/c of his cheese ult. though when any of these get fed I agree it's hell to play against (and thats as a jax main as well so i've been on both sides of this).

Skirmishers excell in 1v1 but their teamfight is definitely lacking, hence why most of them become split pushers later in the game.

skirmishes aren't nearly as frustrating as AOE burst mages

especially when those ranged AOE damage pumps still out giant dents in tanks and bruisers

even as much as I despise ekko even he takes a bigger risk than any mage ever needs to in order to get a big payoff

Yeah, they're meant to be monstrous in 1v1 and generally weaker in teamfights than other classes. The old skirmishers in particular are especially horrible in teamfights due to age it seems. Like reworked Fiora, Yasuo and Ekko are better off than say Riven, Master Yi and especially Tryndamere. Also, dunno if you want to include Jayce and GP there as well. They both have skirmisher as their secondary classification.

If skirmishers didn't have their defensive tools, they probably would be pretty terrible overall. I do think some skirmishers could have better ways to implement said tools, like Trynd and Yasuo.

As a class, they happen to be one of my favorites, up there with juggernauts and vanguards.

Indeed & agreed; like bruisers of old they get to abuse items from both sides of their fusions. Given their description of skirmishers, I'm surprised leesin isn't here, since he also does hit & run tactics more often than not. As for being balanced . . . I'm unsure, but would suggest they be changed like sion & warwick; some clear moments of power, but having significant costs (or moments of weakness) for failing to combo correctly.
